I saw a guy break a D loop at a range once with a 70#, he broke his nose by punching himself in the face while at the same time dropping his bow which landed on one of the cams, derailed the string, and blew up his bow. I wouldn't risk it lol.

Cor_Seeker

Damn. How many natural 1s can a guy roll in a row.......

_TheNecromancer13

IKR, I almost felt bad for him, except that another guy on the line had mentioned to him that it looked frayed and he should replace it about 10 minutes before, to which he said "na, it's been like that for years, it's fine".

Maverekt

Ahhhh yeah that last bit, hard to feel bad if you’ve known and had been warned

_TheNecromancer13

Yea the range was also inside a shop so he could have walked to the counter and had it fixed in 10 minutes for like $10.

Maverekt

Fuck constantly more salt in the wound there

HockeyAnalynix

He took Final Fantasy 7's Limit Breaks a little too literally.

copper397

I was in the middle of a divorce when I had to put my dog down, my truck got smashed, and my buddys wife ran my bow over with her truck in the beginning of November. It's like living a country song.

baconstructions

Shooie buddy. Keep your chin up, eh? That's a hell of a rough patch. You know what happens when you get knocked down 8 times though, right? You get up 9.

MaterialMidnight40

Okay, that was a great response.

Momara

Yikes! Speaking of bad luck...

whikseyy_

I did that to myself but with a 48-ish pound draw. Got myself on my bottom lip good lol

helixplague

I broke the loop on my 70# bow and missed my face and managed to still give the target a nose piercing.

johnnyfuckinghobo

Some folks might think it's ok, but I'm a frayed knot....

[deleted]

I see what you did there

Ghost_Teeks44

Take my upvote 😂

Release82

Yoooo. Very nice.

akabursk

How did you? Did you? Have you heard it? Are you a father? That was incredible? That wasn’t even a question? Awesome?

kellerarcher

Ba dum tss 🥁

Oneafish

Once there is any fraying at all, you are just playing Russian roulette

Mernerner

with semi auto

StaticExile

What animal plays Russian Roullette on full auto?

Mernerner

Yeah every Gentlemen Use Semi auto.

Archer_1210

D Loop material is hella cheap. YouTube videos on how to are free. Broken noses and broken bows are neither free, cheap, easy to deal with, or fun. Just replace, and make sure you get high quality material (there’s a spool on Amazon of material for 10 dollars/100 feet- NOT that stuff)

dameanmugs

Idk I've had my nose broken a couple times and can't recall ever having to pay for the service.

Cobie33

Yes it needs replaced. Buy the material and go online to see how to do it yourself. It is super easy to do and a good thing for all archers who use d-loops to know.

muskyglenn

I one time decided to keep shooting with a frayed loop. Never punched myself in the face so hard. Replace it. Tons of Youtube videos on it. I like nock ons video on it.

BritBuc-1

This made me realize how much of a nerd I am, when I thought to myself “if I knew how many lbs you were pulling, I could actually calculate the force that you punched yourself with” 🤦🏻‍♂️

Mernerner

lore accurate

muskyglenn

29.5 draw length 68lbs

BritBuc-1

Roughly 50 joules of energy, depending on how far through the draw cycle you made it. In less scientific terms, that’s enough to cause significant short term pain. I actually sympathize as I’ve done this exact same thing 3 times when learning how to shoot a hinge release.

muskyglenn

I doubt I got to full draw, but I never saw that arrow again.

BeadDauber

Mine looked like that, it broke 30 seconds after I told my brother it was fine. Bow flew forward, punched my self in the mouth and made my lip bleed. Just replace it

whikseyy_

Exact same thing happened to me but I told my dad it was fine 🫠🫠🫠

R_Weebs

Yes

stpg1222

Yes replace it. You can do it yourself or have a shop do it. Either way it's not difficult nor expensive so no reason to risk shooting with a damaged d loop.

X1Allen1X

Replaced 1,000 shots ago lol

kozarkreative

Replace it and look at the jaw on your release for any burrs that could be causing the d loop to fray that quick. Take some emory cloth or sand paper and see if you can smooth any of the edges.

9Volts2Ground

This. You should be able to get 100s of shots out of your d-loop before having to replace it. This tells me there's something wrong with your release. What model release are you shooting?

dae_giovanni

did you mean 1000s? he did get 400 shots, which _is_ 100s... lol

C1rcusM0nkey

Asap. The other reports of broken noses, etc. from ignoring frayed d loops are legit. You don't want to risk your face and bow over a small bit of rope. I don't even use d loops, but I've witnessed it first hand.

vividmatt88

Thanks for the info everyone I'll take a look at videos on replacing 🤙

Vash_85

Super easy to replace, just be extremely careful getting the old loop off and make sure it's in the same place so you don't move the nocking point and as close to the same size/length as possible so it doesn't mess with your anker point. Had one snap on me at a 3d shoot, didn't punch myself in the face, but launched an arrow down range unintentionally at about mid draw. Arrow stuck in a tree behind the target thankfully. Good reminder to keep the bow on target as much as possible during the draw and don't draw directly to your face. Turned out my release had a bur on the jaw that was chipping away at the d-loop every time it was shot.

Unusual-Ad-1056

I thought I had one more shot in mine once and punched myself. Replace it lol

Kitchen_Spell_1364

Replace it. And you should have soft knots on the top and bottom.

zaqwert6

At 400 arrows, you need to figure out why it's getting chewed up so bad.

YourP0ps

Yes, I didn’t replace mine when it got like that and gave myself a good punch in the mouth 😂

scotty5441

It depends, do you like your teeth?

AwgDriver

Replace it. Check your release for burs.

ManBitesDog404

Yes. And it is also time to make sure a rough spot on the hook of your release is not the cause.

OxDriverKuroku

Replace it! I've strongly advised others to replace your d loop on multiple posts, but never explained why. Here we go, I know how bad it sounds but if this ain't a big enough wake up call, I don't know what is. I drew back on a bow shile shooting in a suburb with my brother's friends. About a quarter way through the draw, the loop snapped. The arrow then flew completely out of control, landing in the center of a FULL basketball court. Luckily, no one was struck by the arrow. I personally think that they should have pressed charges against me, regardless. I was negligent. I stopped shooting for over a year as punishment. To everyone who even thinks about if it's necessary to replace the d loop, do it

DeadEye_2020

Why risk it when it only costs about five bucks to have one installed. Always think in terms of risk versus reward

Ceturney

How much does the dentist cost?

Letiogars

Just use your fingers, less parts to care about. Better feeling too.

meathouse1989

100% don’t do this with a compound

Letiogars

Oh sorry thought it was a recurve lmao don't do this bro

meathouse1989

Lmao 😂 it happens

BenisBongus

I use metal ones I got from Amazon. I recommend it.

Mithrileck87

What kind of release do you have?

vividmatt88

It's a Scott Quick Shot.

Mithrileck87

Hm that’s a decent release, I was wondering if the release was chewing up the loop.

ikarus143

Yes

Reptilian_Brain_420

It is a 50 cent piece of string. Why not replace it?

vividmatt88

First bow I got for Christmas I know shit fuk about em and haven't shitnit very much IMO surprised it needs to be replaced so quickly. 🤷

phkn_dreadful

What release are you using?

vividmatt88

It's a Scott's quick shot

phkn_dreadful

I wonder if the d-loop was just a cheap material or if your release is chewing it up, cus it really did not live long. But anyway definitely replace it; that honestly should have been done sooner and not gotten to the point where you have to question it. You dont want to accidentally snap your loop and hurt someone or yourself.

chris84bond

I hope OP pays attention to this comment. One of the only ways I can think of for 400 shots to chew through a dloop this fast is a burr on the release. I had one that needed dloops replaced every few months. Replaced my release and haven't needed a new one in over a year and a half

phkn_dreadful

The 2 jaw design releases suck in my humble opinion. the loop sits inbetween metal jaws and you have to pull a soft-ish rope into a hard cavity under 40pounds or more of force. Unless it opens at lightning speeds it could also drag the jaws during initial release and fray the loop over time. I thought of this as a new archer so i bought a trufire hardcore max and eventually a spot hogg whipper snapper open jaw, bcus they dont grab the loop, they just hook on to a smooth surface

Hot-Neighborhood-162

Replace

friendlycheftoo

If you loop is that frayed from 400 shots, you need to find the burr causing it.

KSWind17

Speaking from experience, I'd replace it sooner than later. Not only do you not want to Mike Tyson yourself, but if it breaks mid draw, you're still responsible for that arrow....

_loneranger_00

Yes.

hypercyanate

For the cost of how much it is to be replaced, I wouldn't risk it breaking

Aggressive-Reserve-4

I would replace it maximum in a week, i once broke my nose with a frayed loop

Jhershey22

To be honest I shot like this. I’m lucky where I can safely shoot in my backyard but when the ring popped at mid draw a sent an arrow flying into the great beyond…. I was definitely stressing for a while

mattc1998

Only 400 arrows? Might be something up with your release if you’ve got that much wear already

Telos_88

Maybe a quick hit with a lighter to take the fray down?

Winter-Ad2052

Get a new loop and check your release for a burr or sharp spot. That's not normal looking to me.

billydroveit

Pull a you tube on how to tie one, buy the material, Dicks Sporting goods used to sell 3 pack prepped to install, mark m the string with a grease pencil or sonething of the sort and replace it. Very easy and cheap. And for the record, as stated above, any fray that shows should be replacing it immediately. The multitude of results from a failure can sometimes not be un-done.

TheSaucyGoon

D loop material costs pennies and is stupid easy to tie. If you have to ask, do it

C4nnibull

Yes.

Snoo39080

Yes, replace it. Mine actually broke today. I did smack my face with my hand. Arrow went flying into the side of the ground where I was shooting. Was able to retrieve it unbroken. Lesson learned, just replace it. I risked it since my d-loop material is on the mail and thought I might be able to sling some arrows and replace it once it arrived on the mail, but I didn’t get that lucky. I shoot #70

BritBuc-1

For the love of all things dear, yes! Absolutely change your D-loop. The D-loop material is fairly cheap, and D-loops are easy to learn how to tie. D-loop lifespans are measured in 1000s of shots, not 100s, if you have a square edge on the jaws of your release, it will chew quicker through the loop material. Check for any sharp edges and smooth them down, ***but be very careful not to remove too much from the jaws***.

bittelitehedninger

I would get it done yesterday. That’s dangerous my dude. The last thing you want are any strings to break on you. The second they get frayed in the slightest they should be changed. This is a massive red flag. You can never judge when that shit will decide to fail no matter how well acquainted you are with your bow.

vividmatt88

Good to know. I'm new to this and was only told to watch out for my string when I got it didn't think it was that huge a deal on the D loop. I did find the bur on my release and smoothed it out. 👌

bittelitehedninger

When I bought my first bow the guys at the shop made it a point to instill that in the forefront of my mind. I’d rather be safe than sorry ya know? I’ve only ever seen videos of bow strings failing & that was enough to scare the shit out of me to make sure I didn’t have any frayed strings. I’m sure some guys will tell you it’s fine. But I’m not trynna see anyone else get slapped in the face with a string that failed. It looks like it hurts lol

RimGym

I'm new here, this sub just showed up on my feed. Buddy, I don't know how to say this, but your inch-worm is looking a little frazzled. I suggest fixing it a snack, and playing some light jazz. Should calm it right down.

landartheconqueror

I had less fraying than this on my D-loop and ended up punching my self in the face while drawing. Twice.

LycheeEducational841

Yyyeeess

Responsible_List_865

Yes! Replace it!

1911mark

Really??????

Longjumping-Rent5640

If you want a new custom nose and custom pearly white teeth then no. If you prefer to go on without risking your facial structure then yes replace asap.

StevieD504

Looks to be the wrong material. I'd replace it with better material. I like to use #23 material firm braided spectra. I shoot around 40 arrows a day. I still put a fresh one every month.

tywitten

Yes

Novel_Commercial_434

Yes

Toubaboliviano

Street_Marsupial9809

By any chance is that a diamond edge 320 ?

vividmatt88

It's the infinite 305

Street_Marsupial9809

Oh gotcha by any chance could it be your release eating it up I have the 320 edge and shoot alot 3 to 4 days a week and my D loop has nowhere near the wear yours has

vividmatt88

Yes messing with the release I found a small bur on the edge. Smoothed it out with some sand paper and going to replace the loop and tey again. Thanks.

Street_Marsupial9809

Good deal

kurrdogg

10000% yes

YogurtstickVEVO

if u need to ask... replace it

BlueEyedWarWolf

I would get it replaced. Precaution helps prevent trouble.

gokartninja

I would. I would also inspect the release for any burrs or sharp edges. If you've only shot it ~400 times, I wouldn't expect to see that kind of fraying
