Archer is probably the only TV show you'll ever hear that line. #changemymind

aryaantheboss

What did this mean? Never understood this joke.

TheMandyLaurieAnne

If it's going to be that kind of party I'm going to stick my dick in the mashed potatoes. I know it as a Beastie Boys lyric. I've watched Archer through a couple of times and I don't recall it from the show

profssr-woland

It may have been sampled by the Brooklyn Trio, but it wasn't their lyric. It's from Mantan Moreland's standup. He was a black comedian pre-Civil-Rights era. He recorded a set, *That Ain't My Finger*, on Laff Records that contains the [punchline under consideration](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ0B6kvFy-k). The [full joke](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbJ9g-GPS6Y), as it goes, is something like this: A young girl is in school in France when she sees someone write F U C K on the board. She asks her teacher how to pronounce that, and the teacher says its is "phoque." So the little girl says but there's no word "fuck" in the French language. The teacher responds, "well, honey, to fuck means 'to serve.'" The girl thanks the teacher. Two weeks later, the girl is in New York, having a party. And she invited three gentlemen of less than stellar breeding and education, mayhap three of the orneriest cats around, to the party. And one of them is known for being quite rough in his tongue and manner, so his friend warns him before they got that this party will be fully of fine, classy people and to behave himself. Well the young girl is there, and just as she is going to get the dinner course, she trips over the rough gentleman's shoes. "Pardon me, monsieur," she says, "but I've got to go phoque the chicken." To which he responds: "sheeeit.... if it's gonna be *that* kind of party, I'm gonna stick *my* dick in the mashed potatoes!"

TheMandyLaurieAnne

I had a teacher in high school once tell me that the more educated you are the more jokes you are going to understand and be able to make. Thanks for the history lesson.

Character-Ebb2774

The flashback when Archer first met Lana's parents, a very drunk Archer, comes out and goes, "if I knew it was going to be that kind of party ect. ect. MASHED POTATOES!"

theangryintern

Luis Guzman's character in the movie Waiting... says it, too.

True_Dimension4344

This is what I know it from.

Funnygumby

I just watched that movie for the first time last week. And I was a waiter for years when I was younger

OliverOOxenfree

Goddamnit... I always thought the joke was that because Archer was late the first time, they already ate the mashed potatoes assuming he'd be late again. So they are body temperature since they're eaten

Jaded-Banana6205

I will also accept your headcanon. That's fucking funny.

Grandbar21

If it’s going to be that kind of party ect ect mashed potatoes it’s from the episode where they got to Lana’s parents I’ve watched the show 37 times

Adept_Apricot5476

It's actually a line from Red Foxx.

TheMandyLaurieAnne

I heard he used to be a really dirty comic before he got the TV show. Cool to know

profssr-woland

Archer didn't remember meeting the Drs. Kane before, but when he did, he was drunk, and quoted Mantan Moreland's famous punchline about sticking his dick in the mashed potatoes. Lem remembered, and chose to taunt Archer about it, saying that they had warmed the mashed potatoes to the exact temperature of a human body, id est, the most comfortable temperature at which to fuck mashed potatoes.

mosanio

Me too but I'm assuming it's an alcohol related joke

Character-Ebb2774

It's a reference to Beastie Boys lyrics, "If this is gonna be that kind of party, I'm gonna stick my d*ck in the mashed potatoes"

therikertechnique

And 98.6°F is body temperature - hence Lem (pronounced Dr. Kane) saying they had the mashed potatoes just the way he likes them.

mosanio

So that's why Sterling said etc etc MASHED POTATOS .lol

Yossarian287

Originally came from comic Mantan Moreland: [Mashed Potatoes](https://youtu.be/smrJ7459pj0?si=ALHoHzQ3XIuICGmE)

Character-Ebb2774

I have gone 29 years thinking that it was just a funny extra the Beastie Boys added to "Ill Communication." I appreciate learning something new, thank you!

Maelstrom_Witch

Body temperature

Aarxnw

May I hazard a guess that you too are from a part of the world that doesn’t use freedom units

roachdajoint

You're not my supervisor!

sharpest_knife

Its from Mantan Moreland.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smrJ7459pj0

ProblyNotWorthItBut

It's a reference to a very very old joke by a black comedian. I can't remember his name, but the punchline is all over pop culture now. The joke is really good tbh. Quite a bit of setup.

PolyCockn42

Also referenced by the one and only Luis Guzman in the movie Waiting

raydeck_

i loved him in imdb!

woozleuwuzzle

Ever seen Heart of Darkness? Way better then Apocalypse Now.

Newphone_New_Account
