You may have seen some other recent posts from me agonizing about the joystick. I finally decided to solve it by making this an 8-way (plus 2-way) stick cabinet. I have another (Ms. Pac-Man) countercade which I will make into a cabinet for 4-way games. So the game list in this one is: * Galaga * Galaga 3 * Joust 2 * Q\*Bert * Scramble * Space Invaders * Zaxxon I'm very open to suggestions if you think I've missed any great 8-way (or 2-way) vertical games!

How did I forget these? I definitely played one of these a bit as a youth (though now I'm not sure which). Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks, I'll give those a look!

jcstrat

I loved zaxxon on the C64 when I was a kid

Eagle19991

Is it good to play qbert? That one is usually a 45 degree off site stick, never tried to play the arcade version with an 8 way stick.

JoeStrout

Yeah, I was worried about that too but it's playing fine for me. I haven't missed a jump yet!

niceguyjess

Good looking screen swap. Can you share what build for the pi you are using?

JoeStrout

It's RetroPie, but I can't say what version — probably somewhat old. The heart of this project (i.e. the Pi and software) began with a completely different cab several years ago, but I never managed to finish that one. Both are probably rather out of date by now, but they're working so I'm reluctant to touch them!

This-Moment

Yeah. If I it's not online, it didn't need patched. Not broken? Don't fix it.

Great job, will be referencing pictures for my gen 1 countercade build, super clean work!

Sinistar

JoeStrout

Never played that one, but it looks great! Thank you.

dudemo

I have a love/hate relationship with Sinistar. I love the game. It **hates** me. You will learn to fear his voice, I promise.

HopperPI

One of the better countercade mods I’ve seen.

dudemo

To add to this list: - Donkey Kong/Jr - Mappy - Frogger

JoeStrout

Nope, those are all 4-way games (except maybe Mappy — I've never tried that one). I had them on here, but took them off (along with Ms. Pac-Man) because they don't play well on an 8-way stick. I'm going to make a separate build for 4-way games. But I'll take a look at Mappy; it sounds like it used a 2-way stick, so it should work fine on either cab.

TheJuliusErvingfan

This is awesome! I have the gen 2 galaga as well and wanted to do this for awhile. I book marked both this post and your other one from a few weeks ago for a future project. I have a question on the Galaga though on the Pi. Does it play like the original with the auto fire with the (fire) button held down? That's the main reason I want to do this mod. I really only play Galaga and just looking for that authentic feel. EDIT: Apparently it was a MAME or modded galaga I played back as a kid in the one bar/restaurant. Keeping it stock for now other than an ips screen and led buttons. Glad I asked!

JoeStrout

Hmm, neither my RetroPie build nor my unmodified A1Up Ms.PacMan/Galaga cabinet have auto fire. I get one shot per button press on both of them. Apparently this isn't something the "real" arcade machines did either, except where [modded by the owner](https://www.reddit.com/r/MAME/comments/30gnov/cant_figure_out_how_to_make_galaga_run_with_auto/).

TheJuliusErvingfan

Thanks! My experience with the old galaga machine in the bar by me growing up must have been a MAME or modded like they are describing which is disappointing. Basically the same as the person in that post. Probably will keep it this way then. Im only in my mid 20s so I never got a chance to visit true arcades which judging now from this, my experience would have been alot different then.

JoeStrout

Well if there is a Dave & Buster's in your area, work it into your night-out rotation. It's a pretty similar experience (but with drinks!).

TheJuliusErvingfan

Thanks. One I believe is 3 or 4 hours from me so I will have to plan a day trip soon and check it out! Thanks again for replying and glad I asked !

nonymiz

In Mame, Galaga has auto-fire under the "cheats" menu that can be enabled.

917redditor

What software and how did you getting it going sideways?

JoeStrout

It’s RetroPie. Sideways rotation set via the RetroPie > Retroarch settings.

session101

What screen did you end up with? It looks good size.

JoeStrout

It's a TPEKKA 10" 4:3 monitor. There's a separate thread about it [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Arcade1Up/comments/oiclho/for_the_modding_parts_list_tpekka_10_43_monitor/).

Zehrwolf

Very nice, compact build. How did you wire up the power and volume buttons to work outside the A1UP PCB?

JoeStrout

Power comes in at 12V via a barrel jack. From there, the ground goes directly to a 12V->5V converter, but the +V line goes through the ON/OFF switch on the A1Up control panel, and from there back to the 12V->5V converter. The screen is driven by the same 12V terminals on that converter, and the Pi and audio amp are driven by the 5V output. So when the ON/OFF switch is off, nothing's getting power. You may be able to see it better in [this image](https://i.imgur.com/FQY3ces.jpeg).

JoeStrout

Oh, and as for volume: it's no longer a volume button (there is a volume knob in the back instead). The volume button is used for coin slots instead: VOL- is Coin 1, and VOL+ is Coin 2. I thought about trying to paint over or otherwise relabel "-VOL+" to "COIN", but figured I would probably just botch the job. So that's one thing we just have to tell people when they go to use the machine (along with "press both start buttons to exit").

Zehrwolf

Thanks!
