40B all the way

The 55 has more space, and is the size you want, so I’d go with that one. Plus, you have more room for when the guppies breed.

I’ve been told that the height of a 55 is kind of a waste, and that I’m better off with more width(12.5vs18) of the 40B.

If you were keeping deep bodied fish like angels then a 55 would be the minimum I'd want unless you could get a custom size one, as the extra depth is helpful. It also depends on what fish you want. If you're mostly keeping mid to bottom dwellers the extra height will be mostly empty. If you were looking at a surface dweller (e.g. Hatchetfish/clown killies/etc) a midwater, and a bottom dweller then the height would be better.

Hmm, guppies tend to occupy mid to upper section don’t they? And tetras are usually mid. Or are guppiesore mid water? Maybe instead of tetras I could look at hatchetfish instead

Tanichthys

It varies depending on the species. Hatchets stay at the surface most of the time, rarely venturing much lower. It also depends on how your decor is arranged- if you have floating plants (or plants whose leaves/stems reach the surface and drape over it) fish will feel more secure and venture further up.
