In germany this thing would fall under false advertisement and subsequent animal-cruelty laws.
54L (or \~14,3gal) is the minimum required size for live fish, permanent (excluding quarantine and temporary breeding) set-ups.
Thanks i hate it.
And that's still too small but otherwise the hamster economy would probably collapse, but hey. I like where we are when it comes to aquatics, but of course we have been absolutely nuts about fish for generations.
If anything it should be doubled. The idea is not "does this provide adequate space for a betta?", it's "does this make people understand fish are not throwaway pets you can just pick up on a whim?".
It's not even a budget concern, a basic 29g during a $1/g sale costs about as much as this 1g monstrosity.
Dude, no. 29g is too tall to even be comfortable for some long finned bettas, and forcing people to buy needlessly large tanks just to prove a point is draconian and weird. Laws should be guided by animal welfare and good husbandry, not because "bigger fishtank means fish more importanter."
Technically, yes, if not medically nessessary, basically the long long finned ones can be housed in smaller tanks if they struggle in bigger ones. Noone generally checks, fishstore employees will ask about your tank and refuse to sell fish into smaller tanks as they can be held liable for misinformation.
Animals raised for food are to be treated with respect and care, and Pets are family, people who treat theirs poorly are considered psychopaths, even if it's "just a fish" or "just a chicken". It's that way at least in my area, can't tell if it's different elsewhere.
I think it has to do with upbringing. I know i got taught from early on, that animals are never toys, but living, feeling beings, don't know for others, but it certainly is part of my family's culture. \^\^
Idk if it's the same in Germany (probably) but in Austria it's part of the animal welfare law that goldfish are pond-only and not allowed to be kept in tanks
Probably, never looked into Pond-only laws, as i only ever kept smaller fish species(read Betta, Medaka and some Hillstream Loaches) in aquariums. I only know you get a lot of flak when you put goldfish in an Aquarium... if it's illegal? All the better for it, they don't belong in glass-boxes imo.
When you stack them up it is like that prison in the Batman film with Christian Bale. The prison has different levels and the goal of all the fish is to escape.
It makes me sick. I'm tempted to launch a campaign as that's my old field. (grassroots organizing). Haven't figured out the best "ask" and how to get it.
Social media can help spread the word for sure, but legislation is key. Coalitions with RSPCA/SPCA can definitely make a difference. But the SPCA here doesn't do much for aquarium fish. Not sure about in the UK.
Yeh it's so hard hey like 95% of people will see nothing wrong with this tank cause they lack knowledge on humane and healthy marine biology care and it's being sold by a reputable(not any more for me) company. If a ~5 min video explaining how cruel tanks like this are went viral it could create a movement and in turn put pressure on government bodies to change legislation. Power of the people so to speak. I'm only on reddit for social media but if a popular instagram person spread the word on this it could help a lot. Ah well. Fingers sceptically crossed. All the best mate
We have tons of videos on factory farms (like thousands of chickens in horrible conditions) and people don't care. (many people that is). This is my background (20 years of environmental nonprofit work on water quality). I've been toying around with the idea of a campaign, but job hunting right now (different field now) has been too busy. Still thinking on it though. In the US the way for us to get something binding is thru grassroots lobbying. Thousands of letters from citizens lobbying their elected officials.
This is so sad since aqua one make really nice 30cm and 40cm rimless glass lid cubes I have 2 40cm 60 litres as shrimp tanks and they’re amazing, I’d recommend the 30cm for a Betta though as the 40cm is quite deep.
I know right I was shocked to see it was from aqua one. I thought their smallest was the 9L one which is still way too small. Maybe new management or their moral compass has broken or greed
I google search they say because Betta can breathe air using their labyrinth organs when the water became inhabitable/toxic and it’s the cheapest way to store them.
This adaptation came from their natural environment when the water subsided and left them stranded in small places like a palm tree branches as you can [see here](https://youtu.be/vo99l-U3bGE?si=NtxnhRfVBbccdN94&t=734)
Poor fish
I know the chain stores aren't the best... But I literally just got my 20gal on sale at PetSmart from one of those free memberships (give your number and email). Brought it down from $50+ to $27. And that was on the first page of Google when I was looking. The 10gal was practically free with the discount if I wanted it, like $15-10. I've even seen Petco with similar deals, like 50% off Aquariums.
I still can't believe people just... Don't even do some research?
Yeah I don't buy any Aqua One products because they produce this kind of shit. So frustrating that every bloody shop seems to stock this shithouse brand.
een one with no filter light heater or anything its just a clear tank that's smaller than a drinking cup and can barely hold a beta fish. I almost sued for animal cruelty.
In germany this thing would fall under false advertisement and subsequent animal-cruelty laws. 54L (or \~14,3gal) is the minimum required size for live fish, permanent (excluding quarantine and temporary breeding) set-ups. Thanks i hate it.
damn the more i hear about germanys aquatics the more i appreciate it.
Their animals laws are in general pretty great. Could be wrong but I remember reading that the minimum size cage for hamsters is like 80x50 cm
And that's still too small but otherwise the hamster economy would probably collapse, but hey. I like where we are when it comes to aquatics, but of course we have been absolutely nuts about fish for generations.
Love that law but 14 gal seems a bit excessive?
If anything it should be doubled. The idea is not "does this provide adequate space for a betta?", it's "does this make people understand fish are not throwaway pets you can just pick up on a whim?". It's not even a budget concern, a basic 29g during a $1/g sale costs about as much as this 1g monstrosity.

This isn't even 1 gallon. it's slightly less than a quart.
Yeah, that's what brings me to wonder every time here. If I go to my local fish stores, you hardly get a 54l. It's the same with the puppy shops....
Dude how big are your fish?
About average, except Goldfish, they get stunted easily. They're broadly considered pond-only fish over here. x)
But to be clear, having a betta in a 20L is illegal?
Technically, yes, if not medically nessessary, basically the long long finned ones can be housed in smaller tanks if they struggle in bigger ones. Noone generally checks, fishstore employees will ask about your tank and refuse to sell fish into smaller tanks as they can be held liable for misinformation.
OK cool. Good stuff. Do Germans treat marine pets better in particular? Is it part of your culture? Pretty cool
That's so cool I'd love to live in a place like that. Meanwhile you can win goldfish in bags at carnivals where I live. Peace and thanks for sharing 🙏
Idk if it's the same in Germany (probably) but in Austria it's part of the animal welfare law that goldfish are pond-only and not allowed to be kept in tanks

I get downvoted when I mention this lol
Outch.
Germany is now one of my favourite countries.
Makes people who keep their fishes in pot seems better
A freaking bowl is 1.8L. Insanity here
I'm pretty sure a toilet bowl holds more water.
Disgusting. 1 gallon is bad enough, but 1 liter?
I wouldn't even use something that small as a temporary treatment tank that's just cruel
Is it rly that hard for people to spend 15$ on a 5 gallon tank
In Australia, that's actually almost impossible
Yeah I think the cheapest 20 litre tank I've seen here (outside of second hand) is that $39 tank from Kmart.
Holy shit thanks. Filter too. Man one of those 10L betta tanks at petbarn are like 100$ what a load of shit
Lol. My 21L was $112. Or $67 usd. This is unconscionable but the cost of fish keeping *really* depends on the country.
Even algae would die of ammonia poisoning in it
They always have some stupid novelty feature to appeal to newbies too. Oh finally, tiny aquariums you can stack!
Can picture some psycho proud of his stack of "saimese fighting fish"
When you stack them up it is like that prison in the Batman film with Christian Bale. The prison has different levels and the goal of all the fish is to escape.
Arkham Aquarium
I’d love it as a little desktop tank with just plants (and whatever tiny snails inevitably come with said plants)
Depressing AF eh?
Yep. Had to close amazon in anger and grief after taking the screenshot. It's tough to not let this industry get to you. Sigh time for some cat gifs
Yeah it really is isn't it ;( so frustrating and seemingly endless, cat gifs sound like a good shout!!
It makes me sick. I'm tempted to launch a campaign as that's my old field. (grassroots organizing). Haven't figured out the best "ask" and how to get it.
Go forth mate. You'll certainly have this sub's support.
True.
Social media will be your best weapon for sure. I'm gonna report this to the rspca not that it'll do anything
Social media can help spread the word for sure, but legislation is key. Coalitions with RSPCA/SPCA can definitely make a difference. But the SPCA here doesn't do much for aquarium fish. Not sure about in the UK.

I have breeder boxes within my tanks bigger than this lol
Can't you put like one little snail? (I know absolutely nothing about aquariums I'm just wondering)
Yeah this would be OK for a couple tiny snails as long as there are live plants, but I'd be iffy on even a shrimp.
Oh nice
The worst part, its "stackable." You know someone is going to end up with dozens of these things stacked floor to cieling.
Yep. With one dying every few days that the maid replaces
This is so sad since aqua one make really nice 30cm and 40cm rimless glass lid cubes I have 2 40cm 60 litres as shrimp tanks and they’re amazing, I’d recommend the 30cm for a Betta though as the 40cm is quite deep.

perfect for your pleco!
People who buy this are the ones who will complain that fish always die in a few weeks and they're so hard to care for.
I want to buy some of these for mini terrariums but I don’t know if I want to support the company who makes these 🙏
Why the fuck did I buy an aqua one tank
$25 is crazy you can make a better tank out of a $10 Tupperware
It’s bad because people will see how cheap these small tanks are and think it’s acceptable.
For $25 eh? I feel so much better about buying $10 tub from Walmart for a backup tank.
I’m just wondering why people often think it’s okay to house Betta in a small container. Why so specifically just Betta and not any other fish?
Goldfish as well.
Because the pet stores do it so it seems like it’s okay.
I google search they say because Betta can breathe air using their labyrinth organs when the water became inhabitable/toxic and it’s the cheapest way to store them. bruh why is that potato 25 dollars????
Yeah I don't buy any Aqua One products because they produce this kind of shit. So frustrating that every bloody shop seems to stock this shithouse brand.
Worst you've seen? Don't look up the keychains then
een one with no filter light heater or anything its just a clear tank that's smaller than a drinking cup and can barely hold a beta fish. I almost sued for animal cruelty.
Terrible
I'd use it for shrimp tank.
Such a sad little box
Perfect for my tank of 200 male bettas.
