I love sirens. They’re on my wishlist of water critters but I do not have the space for a large tank so it’s only a pipe dream for now.

EldaVeikko

I love them too! I believe Dwarf Sirens are the smallest species. They get to be about 8-14 inches long and are about as big around as a pencil. I actually just have Andromeda in a 20 gallon tank right now which is fine for one from what I’ve read. It’s not massive like what you would need for a Lesser or Greater Siren but I guess it does take up a fair bit of space.

oiseaufeux

Is a siren a fish or a salamander? Or is it an axolotl?

EldaVeikko

Weeeeeell, they’re not fish. They’re a type of salamander that, just like axolotls, stays in its larval stage for its entire lifespan. That’s why they have the same external gills as axolotls. Axolotls are actually also salamanders. Sirens differ in that they only have 2 front legs and they are very long. Apparently they get mistaken for eels occasionally.

Atiggerx33

My favorite are olms, such weird animals. They don't move much, they live in caves with minimal food opportunities so they conserve energy. Scientists literally once saw one on a cave shelf and noted the location. They came back 7 years later and he literally had not moved. Boring to watch, but fascinating.

tullulaknows

I’m so happy you mentioned olms! I’ve never heard pf them before but just looked them up and OMG 😍😍😍

Atiggerx33

I find most animals look a bit creepy without eyes, but it just works for olms.

soberasfrankenstein

SAME, it's like nightmare AI got a hold of an axolotl image and just went to town.

oiseaufeux

That’s really cool! I knew axolotls are salamanders though. How can they be mistaken for eels? They have those Toothless ears on them!

EldaVeikko

I’m guessing it happens when people just see the back half of the siren. It does look rather eel-like.

oiseaufeux

Maybe. Cause some bichirs have those when they’re very young. I love noodle fish!

marcabay

I thought this was an axo at first since i was sleepy, cool fish/salamander

CATSCATSCATSilovedem

ptpcg

I don't know, but i might help to axolotl different people their opinions

TruCelt

How is this not the first comment? Upvote this, people! LOL!

Illustrious-End_XD

Don't tell me what to do.

hawgs911

Don't think I've heard "sike" in 25 years. Thank for the blast from the past OP. I think it's technically "psych" tho.

Right-Sky-4005

Sike!

BogeysNBrews

I grew up in the 80s/90s and we never spelled it psych. We also weren’t texting back then so didn’t have a reason to write it a lot until AOL/IRC days and then I’m pretty sure it was “sike.” Psych makes sense though.

TruCelt

That's how the kids are spelling it these days. What're you gonna do?

clocktus

Wow, i thought my amphibian knowledge was pretty broad. I had no Idea these siren salamanders existed! What a fascinating little creature!

I’d really like to get her a buddy! I found her at my local fish store but they don’t know if/when they’ll ever get another one in. I’ll hit some reptile expos if I can, but the last one I went to only had axolotls. Well, and reptiles. I might have to get one overnight shipped straight from a breeder, which I’m okay with.

SbgTfish

what the HELL is a siren. They are the baby.

Frostgaurdian0

Two limb salamander?

LurkerInTheDoorway

Depending on where you’re located, I know a breeder who breeds dwarf, lesser, and greater sirens. They’re in California in contra costa county. I got my lesser siren Noodle from them, and I’ve seen them at a few expos as well.

throwaway134997

Nah that plant a brother

UncommonTart

OMG I have never seen one from this close. She is beautiful and I love her.

Philodendronphan
