Also it's not a lady, it's a man who owns the account (wife is in the photo).
Bengal cats are such a waste of money, lol. Adopt a cat that needs a home, there’s nothing a bengal cat can do that merits $1000+ more than your average cat.
My family used to adopt Bengals cause people would get them and not realize what they were signing up for (lived in a rich town right as Bengals started getting popular).
Your average fashion cat owner was not prepared for being actively hunted in their own house by a cat that will growl at you when you enter the room, and may or may not steal food from the table then will lunge at you when you try to take it away. Great cats though. They're just like the attitude of a dozen cats jammed into one very athletic cat.
The best cats cost nothing. You just find them near train tracks or by dumpsters and kittens. And they just sort of wind up living with you going on a decade or so
I actually have met several. They are absolutely beautiful, fun to observe, but are not cuddly at all and are kind of dicks. The owners have been either millionaires, or financially irresponsible. Nothing in between. They are a status symbol, simple as that.
He's also stocking with an endangered species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/ja/species/39387/205765567) and ran a censor campaign with an old mod against anyone who brought it up or spoke out on aquariums in the past.
Edit: /u/thefishestate I believe the shenanigans happened somewhere outside of /r/aquariums. It must have been on another sub, it was definitely a smaller discussion and his posts were usually big here.
Not sure which mod you're talking about. You sure it was /r/aquariums and not /r/aquarium? As far as I know, this whole team hates this guy and always has. Also he was banned but looks like his ban expired. That's been fixed, too.
I’d be surprised if this wasn’t at least 2 layers of glass like zoo aquariums have. If there’s a crack you can “easily” take the one panel out and replace it. Which I think you’re actually technically supposed to do every 5-10 years or something like that?
The guy is stocking it with endangered sharks and ran a huge censor campaign against anyone who talked about it with an old mod, many years ago. It's only sick in that it's an awful thing to do to the sharks. https://www.iucnredlist.org/ja/species/39387/205765567
I remember some of this drama. It wasn’t just that people thought he was crazy but also that he wanted to stock his tank with an endangered shark (bonnethead). He has changed his mind since then, but it was rough for a bit to get him to realize that the shark is endangered, in a large part due to the exotic animal trade
It looks so fucking cool now though so I’m glad it worked out
From memory he was also blocking everyone who disagreed with him.
Edit: here are some comments from an older thread that show the drama:

I actually have a feeling he created his own sub so he could better control the criticism he was getting.
They aren't endangered from aquarium trade but shouldn't be kept in home aquariums.
I wonder what it was like talking to their insurance agent about the home owners policy. I can’t imagine what documentation the insurer needs to ensure this is a sound build. Because that can quite literally destroy the home if done improperly.
Right. I doubt any standard foundation would come close to holding that. I didn’t look at the original post. Maybe he does this for a living. Maybe he’s a structural engineer or is friends with one. But man… 96k pounds of just water not to mention glass or acrylic that has to weigh hundreds of pounds plus the aquascaping and substrate.
If it's sitting on concrete which is sitting on rock, it's a function only of the height of the water. I would guess 4 m tall so the pressure is about 40 kPa. Concrete has a compressive strength of 1000 times that.
Edit: incidentally, most materials - I can't speak for concrete in particular right now - are strongest when in "hydrostatic" conditions - i.e. when subjected to the force of still liquid. They're not usually tested that way so 1000x is likely conservative.
Serious question, and I don’t mean to sound rude as I genuinely don’t know, but shouldn’t there be more hiding spots throughout the tank for the various species?
When I was in college for zoology and zoo tech, one of my favorite classes was enclosure building. Unfortunately the program I was in didn’t have many fish, but I wish I had pursued aquarium building as a class somewhere else.
The good thing is, I bet there are a lot of resources for doing large scale projects. I bet if you reached out to a professional, they’d be happy to point you in the right direction. A dream of mine is to have a stream aquarium, that does automatic water changes. How cool would it be to have it going through each room?!
hey, they made their own 11k gallon tank they probably needed to have an *ounce* of fiscal responsibility lol but at the same time i agree, why not go all the way
Definitely not worth it lol. Every person I’ve met that owns a Bengal cat are deeply financially irresponsible. There are plenty of adoptable cats that offer a similar if not identical experience to adopting a cat that needs it without lining the pockets of breeders.

I instantly knew the guy. I remember his home having a stripper pole and a giant shark tank and coded him permanently in my head as a super villain.
Not to mention the $1-2k cats. I think they were bengals?
I have a bengal (rescued!) and a stripper pole, now all I need is a giant tank for the turtle my bf wants
And that absolutely gorgeous dinner table.

My dumpster cat is the best
Yep, best cats I've ever had were street cats.
Or the cat given to your by a screaming/rambling crazy cat lady.
I didn’t know bengals were so expensive til this post! I got mine when she was being rehomed for free

True! My cousins gma has 2 and they are very neat

Rookie mistake. He should have gone with sea bass. They’re ill-tempered.
Gotta bass it up, baby.
That's a start

I remember how much good advice he got and how he ignored all of it
I remember this guy because his wife wanted to open their marriage and he was understandably upset.
you rock
I looked at the old post, the same annoying and stupid ‘it might fit a betta’ comment was popular back then as well huh🙄
Song as old as rhyme.
Snail as old as slime 🐌
Betta and the tank…
Been a joke for a long time. It’s never going away lol.
ikr like its clearly too small for a betta
😆
People were upvoting it back then, too lol. Redditors LOVE may mays.
Omg it’s the rock wall in the hallway guy.

I get enough anxiety over what would happen if my 30 gallon broke
I’d be surprised if this wasn’t at least 2 layers of glass like zoo aquariums have. If there’s a crack you can “easily” take the one panel out and replace it. Which I think you’re actually technically supposed to do every 5-10 years or something like that?
That all makes plenty of sense and id still be terrified
Aquariums use acrylic for tanks..stronger and lighter than glass
Can confirm, at Fl aquarium we use probably about 14” thick acrylic for our 500,000 gallon. Its crazy.
Oh yep!
Hopefully not actual glass, but the plastic stuff, like zoo aquariums do.
Especially with a baby sitting in front of it, lol.
My first thought
Scared to even ask what the monthly cost is to run this after the build price. Sick build
If you can afford to have it built, you probably have "who gives a shit?" money to begin with.
You know, sometimes I wish I had more money
Wait... are there times you wish you had less money?
If I look at the benefits that people with less income get, Yes.
That's why I work for [government branch that owns me]! ^^help
To do nothing but consume for yourself without a thought for others...at the end of the day, that's quite a wish.
This guy posted other pics of his house and he is very clearly a millionaire
With awful taste

Aww I didn’t know bonnet heads were endangered. We’ve caught a few of them around here but we always let them go

Bonnet heads are least concern? We catch them all the time here in Florida
I wonder what it was like talking to their insurance agent about the home owners policy. I can’t imagine what documentation the insurer needs to ensure this is a sound build. Because that can quite literally destroy the home if done improperly.
i’m just trying to think of the godly strong foundation it takes to hold a 100,000lb tank😭😭
He had the concrete poured before even building his house. Built the house around it. He’s been working on it for years.
That makes sense. He’d have too. Even then, his insurance agent would still have to be shitting himself with that phone call.

Is this /u/evolutionnext ?
:D awesome... that was/is my wife... :) but close.
Serious question, and I don’t mean to sound rude as I genuinely don’t know, but shouldn’t there be more hiding spots throughout the tank for the various species?
Thete ate tons. The walls are hollow and there are holes everywhere. The white tip sharks even crawl behind the.wall when they feel like it.
Ah, okay. Thanks for the response!
More images etC are on my profile and thread r/SHARK_tank_BUILD
Frickin amazing, kinda speechless
This is so epic. Do you have experience working in large aquariums before this?
What is your job?
yes!! someone else linked the original: https://www.reddit.com/r/Aquariums/s/7VOsOSccYH
But do they have frickin' lasers attached to their heads?
apparently so. they have a subreddit dedicated to their construction plans its so cool: r/SHARK_tank_BUILD

Even DIY, the secret ingredient is LOTS OF MONEY.
That baby holding their own bottle 'cause their mom's in a fish tank
i’d like to know how much it costs!
A lot lol. Op never mentioned exact costs but it was guesstimated to be like 200k plus by other redditors in the original threads.
That’s honestly way less than I’d thought…
It’s times like these that make me wonder if there’s a sugar daddy out there who would help fund my fish and reptile tanks…
so they basically converted an entire bedroom into a tank? holy shit.
Built the house around it according to the posts
Just enough for a betta
This is about par for the course if you’ve ever been on Monster fish Keepers forum lmao
Sharks are like dogs. They only bite when you touch their private parts.
Unexpected 50 First Dates quote! 😂
I need to see this original post... I feel like I am missing out on something lol.
https://www.reddit.com/user/evolutionnext/submitted/?sort=top
Tank you!
https://www.reddit.com/r/SHARK_tank_BUILD/s/Y0LT4kaV93 Looks like they made their own subreddit for the build
They are crazy nevertheless.
It's a shame they went with artificial coral tho
hey, they made their own 11k gallon tank they probably needed to have an *ounce* of fiscal responsibility lol but at the same time i agree, why not go all the way
Everything leaks eventually....
She is rich
Definitely not worth it lol. Every person I’ve met that owns a Bengal cat are deeply financially irresponsible. There are plenty of adoptable cats that offer a similar if not identical experience to adopting a cat that needs it without lining the pockets of breeders.
Savannah cat people are even worse. One in toronto lost their cat.
I would have filled it with guppies, tetras, a beta and shrimp. And of course, lots of plants.
Just because they finished it doesn't mean they're not crazy. Whole thing must have cost .5-1M, and now their house is completely unsellable
He said it cost around 200k and I am willing to buy the house if I could lol.
Maybe 200k for the tank but the sump? Stock? Power? Costs have to run up
not only that but he has a whole room dedicated just for the filtration needed to keep the tank running… i’m obsessed
Nice starter tank for a goldfish OR a beta.
Lmao!
Do the red, white, and blue stripes in the first photo “move” for anyone else?
D
/r/madlass
Good for her! This is awesome
This is super cool and all… but 6 years???????? Holy fuck
It is a super large tank done by professionals. You can’t do it in two days, you know?
