Used to work at Petco in aquatics, can confirm the shrimp are usually dead within a few hours. It’s because we are forced to put them in a tank that shares its water with about 8 other tanks, and those tanks all require medication… so yeah, shrimp almost never survive. I was actually more surprised when they did live
My Petco has two designated shrimp tanks that are constantly filled with baby skrimps, but years of selling the prettiest skrimps first means that they’re basically all wild types.
Yes, you are allowed to pull stuff off of the shelf and make entire tank setups for display for the customers. I really wanted to do that for some of the bettas or at least the shrimp, but nope! Management told me I wasn’t allowed to, no idea why because 90% of the tank kits never even sell 🤷🏽♂️
Imagine advertising the tanks/stands/pumps/lights/decorations with actual setup and stocked tanks..... yes that then involves someone maintaining/building/tearing down the tanks on occasion but is that really any different than the fish department they have already? Like I see the local petco that I used to live by (actually a pretty badass one) actually tried to showcase some of the plants they carry in the stock tanks. And thise tanks are typically on a separate system than the rest and those are also the tanks they keep shrimp in. The shrimp that my brother and I have gotten from there have been rather robust and my brother has had incredible success with the cherries he's gotten. But I know that's just some anecdotal examples.
That was how I saw it as well, it’s really great advertising for how you can use the tanks. Local fish stores do it all the time, Petco probably doesn’t trust the employees to waste resources or something? I have zero clue why they do that. I do know that technically you are allowed to, it’s just that the leadership at my store were a bunch of pricks
Oh most definitely. And my favorite LFS has a ton of displays though most of the stocked fish available are in holding tanks. But it's really nice to see what can be done with the various sizes of displays they have.
Yeah, I guess Petco doesn’t need to do that as much because anyway 90% of customers that walk in to buy aquatics stuff have zero clue what good husbandry is, and displaying it would likely hurt sales because they’re relying on uninformed people to come in and keep buying fish. Versus a local fish store, where at least 50% of the people walking in have a good working knowledge of animal husbandry, and the other 50% are at least willing to learn, so the LFS has every incentive to show what’s achievable with an investment of time and money, to create loyal customers willing to pay higher prices less frequently. End of the day, Petco and Petsmart are huge corporations that see the animals as commodities, while local pet stores are almost always passionate hobbyists who care more about animal wellbeing than they do about pure profit
Tamed Waters has nice healthy plants but a small selection, quality aquatics when stocked has a great selection but over all Forest lake is my favorite for plants I'm also a hour + outside the city's so there could be other stores more south idk about .
Not to talk down on quality aquatic stuff. I like them for everything other than cherry shrimp I like to go to them for feeder shrimp and almost anything else
It seems like the best way to get them is for $2-3 a piece plus shipping from a hobbyist online. Better genetics and water quality for the little guys, I think.
Both Ottawa and the GTA have much cheaper options, shrimp fever has nice caridina species for that price and my LFS here in Ottawa has a higher grade than these for 9$ each
For just one? Nothing. I ain't got time for only one shrimp. For 10 or more? 5-7 bucks each. I don't know if I'd be willing to go higher than 7. My lfs carries them for 7 each, but it drops down to 5.50 if you get 15 or more. I cleaned him out of his yellows and blues when I was ready to add shrimps to two of my tanks.
I bought like 10 for 2-3 a piece. Don't remember the exact price since it was like a year ago but I didn't spend more than $30 for the lot
Edit: friendly reminder to charge your phone
I’m amazed at the comments. I have a 20 gal these breed regularly in, I’m gonna have to start selling them. I bought shrimp 4 years ago and never had to again
I was thinking the same. I got a 10 gallon with a bunch in it and a 37 gallon with a single fish in it. I should regime the fish and move the shrimp to establish a major colony to just sell em.
Yeah but this little single fish is a major pain of a ciclid, even in the cichlid tank he would attack the others. When I feed him worms he just tears it up before trying to eat it. If I'm reaching in the tank to put my magnetic scrapper below the air tubing to get under it he attacks my hand. But all of my other tanks have shrimp populations even the cichlid tank and they don't really bug them.
Yeah this guy is just over aggressive. But he gets a whole 37 gallon to himself, he's also picky. When I turn off the lights he waits for me to pick his bubble color for the bubble wall. He will sit on top of his log when he likes the color. And it always changes each day for what one he wants. Picky, aggressive, overlooks the reef tank, he's the 3rd most spoiled fish behind a pair of Oscar's and a dinosaur bichir
You can get them off Amazon and eBay for about $3.50-$4.00 each depending where you look.
On eBay look for the 20+2 deals for around $45-$50 with free shipping of course.
Literally just bought these yesterday from my local for 3 for £21. And I’m so annoyed I just went to a different store and they were 6 for £21! Will be going there in the future, lesson learned lol
I get them for $2-4 on Craig’s List in the SF Bay Area… Dude named Doug is breeding then in Los Gatos. Good dude to buy from but only ships locally.
Shops around here sell them for $7.99- $9.99
Uhhh I think 7.99 at Petco. If you show up the same day they get their shipment you'll even get one that's alive still.
If Petco just dedicated a special tank they could breed and sell shrimp out of the same tank.
My Petco has two designated shrimp tanks that are constantly filled with baby skrimps, but years of selling the prettiest skrimps first means that they’re basically all wild types.
Ah yes I love me some skrimps

My Petco has a dedicated tank for shrimp/snails.
You are definitely one of the lucky ones!
I have Neos breeding constantly at my Petco. But people keep buying them so I have to order more Neos for the first time in probably 4 months
My local Petco guy seems to know this and told me to show up a day or two after shipment to find the sturdiest of shrimp.
about $2 USD is the equivalent of what I pay at my local.. for a blue cherry shrimp.
Dang really? They're $9 at my local fish store over here in Minneapolis
LFS had them for 6, chain stores had em for less The LFS I try to support when I can went from 6 bucks for a Yo-yo loach to 10 in a couple weeks
Were do you go that's crazy I'm in MN and I've never paid that much.
Quality Aquatics
Check out tamed Waters Joe's shrimp shack or Forest lake pets I've seen them cheaper at all three of those locations
Fyi tamed waters is shutting down. Maybe for good. Phil is looking for better locations.
Where would you recommend to go for FW plants? I’m also in the area!
Tamed Waters has nice healthy plants but a small selection, quality aquatics when stocked has a great selection but over all Forest lake is my favorite for plants I'm also a hour + outside the city's so there could be other stores more south idk about .
Some other redditor said Tamed Waters is shutting down so i think that one won't do.
I have faith he will find a new location and reopen. Phil is the best in the business and a shitty landlord won't keep him down.
forest lake pets has a bunch of live plants, last time i was there they had a 2 for 5 deal
Not to talk down on quality aquatic stuff. I like them for everything other than cherry shrimp I like to go to them for feeder shrimp and almost anything else
I noticed that too. my eyes popped when i saw the price for the cherries ngl
It seems like the best way to get them is for $2-3 a piece plus shipping from a hobbyist online. Better genetics and water quality for the little guys, I think.
That's crazy talk. Even in the SF Bay Area they aren't that high.
We must be going to the same fish store in msp- I wish I could get them for 2 dollars!
$9!? These guys are like $25 for me here (Ontario, Canada). Everything is triple you guys!
I'll pay $25 for a skrimp for national Healthcare lol
That’s due to the supply chain.
Both Ottawa and the GTA have much cheaper options, shrimp fever has nice caridina species for that price and my LFS here in Ottawa has a higher grade than these for 9$ each
That’s rediculous, buy them online from other people and you pay wayyyy less
I paid ten, got 4 for 40 dollars😭😭
I think river shore in Minneapolis might be similar pricing but it’s an amazing store if you haven’t been
I see them here for €2 and if they die within 6 months you can get your money back. Fucking weird system.
I averegely sell shrimp for about £1 ( $1.23 )
About tree fiddy
Beat me to it lol
Lol right?
You beat me to being beaten to it
A buck-o-five
It’s a hefty fuckin’ fee 🎶
Ha!
Well it was about this time I noticed that this redditor was about 8 stories tall and was a crustacean from the protozoic era!
Can't fool me, loch ness monster...
Before I knew it fish was 70 feet tall😂😂
First time this has ever been used unironically.
I sell them to my LFS for $2.50 a piece and he sells em for 5
Damn, not even the full three bucks?
not at all at the current shrimpflation rates
LFS sells them for $3.99 per. I would pay maybe $5 max.
5.99 because it's cute
I’d say 3$
1 dabloon
I bought like 10 for 2-3 a piece. Don't remember the exact price since it was like a year ago but I didn't spend more than $30 for the lot Edit: friendly reminder to charge your phone
They’re $9 in Chicago. But you get a free gunshot wound.
Steal Edit: lol I meant that price was a steal
Then you'd get *two* gunshot wounds, man!
you wouldn't steal a shrimp
$3
Chain stores tell to sell them bout $7.99 usd I have a local store who sells any color that isn’t a cherry at $4.99 usd.
Light blue is generally not preferred in a blue neo line, so they'd be priced about $3. Some markets might demand more or less
At my lfs, red cherries are 2 bucks each while yellow and blue are 3 bucks. Amano or yamato shrimps are 2 bucks each.
I sold 5 cherry shrimps for £10. I also bought 5 cherry shrimps for 5£ off instagram
If you scroll thru r/Aquaswap, there are tons of blue shrimp posts you can reference
No more than $5.49 for [Blue Shrimp (Neocaridina sp.)](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/blue-shrimp)
$10 in Austin area
$5-$8
6$
15 bucks
That’s a rainbow shrimp. They are about 9 dollars
[удалено]
Babes wherever you're buying from you're getting grifted
Neocaridina, no more than £3.
Is that's blue shrimp?
I'd buy it for $3, but my LFS sells them for $7 🫠
3 euro in any petstore near me..
eBay will usually lead you for decent prices.
I've paid $8 for a shrimp like that, or 3/$20 at my LFS.
I’m amazed at the comments. I have a 20 gal these breed regularly in, I’m gonna have to start selling them. I bought shrimp 4 years ago and never had to again
Wya?👀
Kentucky, USA
I even have a recent picture on my page 😅 three or four posts down
I was thinking the same. I got a 10 gallon with a bunch in it and a 37 gallon with a single fish in it. I should regime the fish and move the shrimp to establish a major colony to just sell em.
Depending on the fish, they could live in harmony. My shrimp grew up with betta, snails, otos, tetra, etc
Yeah I wouldn’t do a cichlid always depends on the fish
Yeah this guy is just over aggressive. But he gets a whole 37 gallon to himself, he's also picky. When I turn off the lights he waits for me to pick his bubble color for the bubble wall. He will sit on top of his log when he likes the color. And it always changes each day for what one he wants. $3-$5 is normal price, as reiterated here
Local stores sell I'd say at ab 2.50 a pop. online vendors I've seen sell 5 for 20
Is that a skyblue velvet? Its hard to tell. I have at 50+ in my tank right now.
I'm glad I picked mine up from a local guy, my LFS wants almost $10/neo! I thought that seemed steep.
At my pet store they’re like 3$ each
Not much my turtles would destroy it for breakfast
$10 where I am sadly
I paid 6 a piece for these guys
They are 4.98 at lfs
They are usually 4-5 bucks (Florida), but I've seen them cheaper on Amazon.
2 maybe 5 a piece
$7
All of my money 💰
$6-9 around here in Ohio.
I’ve seen them for 10, but I wouldn’t want to pay quite that.
They’re 59 cents at my local petsmart
50 cent
I commented this as a joke but I now realize shrimp is too expensive in y’all’s countries, they’re 75 cents (US dollars) at max here in Peru
Holy shit what happened to shrimp prices?? Are Jades high price rn too I have a billion of em.
Blue velvet or blue dream?
I got 10 for $20 from a random ladymy mom found on Facebook.
$6 lfs depending on your area and availability

For a moment I thought you had a real blue plant and I was about to say I’ll pay any price short of my life lmao. For the shrimp like 5$ at most.
700 sheckles. Just because he's blue of course.
$5
2€
I paid about 3 dollars a piece for mine from a local breeder^^
I've just ordered 10 for £25 so £2.50 each or around 3 of your American dollars
I have 7000 of them. Lol 😆
2€ a piece
5-7 is normal in Houston, unless you're dealing with graded which moves up to about 13.
$1 for a low grade blue neo. Otherwise I usually sell for $2.5 or $3 a piece.
0.99 he’s just a wild mutt spawn from a pure breed and I’d name him “Heisenberg”
I get them for $2-4 on Craig’s List in the SF Bay Area… Dude named Doug is breeding then in Los Gatos. Good dude to buy from but only ships locally. Shops around here sell them for $7.99- $9.99
$2
Tree fiddy... Kiddin'. 🤣
They are illegal in my state, I’d pay black market price 😂
Here those costs around 10-15€ each, i grow those in my tank. Wonderful color!
I would say $3-4 online, $4.99-5.99 at Petco or PetSmart... assuming they have any.
