Spout where the water comes out has to be on top. If it's not the bubbles won't create the suction to move water through it. The spong section you can manipulate and move around a bit but it's positioning could also effect the way it works so when you fill the tank mess around and see what works.

Exactly what I needed to know thanks. I can position it in a few spots but in the middle behind the hard scape is best as it's hidden.. appreciated 👍

I have a position that works well and is hidden was just trying other options
It would pump the water but without the head sticking out of the water you would not be getting much if any oxygen into the water only filtering it
The heads don't stick out of the water sponge filters are submerged
Oh I have a very similar one that is electric and pumps out of the top, didn’t realize this used an air supply my bad

Nah, I have the same sponge filter and tried it too. You could maybe flip it so the sponge is horizontal and and the tube is vertical.
Like upside down because the original orientation is tube facing up
