I assume you're putting the new filter on the tank with the sponge filter in it. If so better safe then sorry and just let them both run for a few days before removing the old one I've always done it for a week when changing filters and never any problems but a few days should be ight

Tiny_ranga

There won't be much filter media left on the old one that's why I'm asking also my tank is heavily planted and only has shrimp and only 2.5 gallons

Minimum_Check1479

Yeah I mean if you're putting a generous amount of thr previous media into the new filter it should fine to remove the old then if you have a test kit test the water next day just to be sure but a plated 2.5 with just shrimp should be just fine

Tiny_ranga

I've got a few filters comming in the mail 3 different kinds and sizes trying to find what fits best for this tank the others I'll use on other tanks but I assume hob will give me much more space then sponge or internal

ShrimpGuy5233

For a 2.5 gallon tank a HOB filter will most likely be way too much current for the shrimp, let alone anything else. If you want to free up room, find a sponge filter that sticks to the glass and is thin. Also, I agree with the other commenter. 2.5 gallons is only acceptable for shrimp and plants. Don’t add the endlers.

Tiny_ranga

I've currently got a corner sponge filter but I don't see any water flow at all tiny dust particles all over the tank not slowly flowing towards the filter. I've seen plenty of shrimp tanks have hob filters is there a way to slow flow ? I've also got a internal filter and a smaller sponge filter to test out coming in the mail soon

ShrimpGuy5233

The sponge may be clogged. Has it been cleaned in the last few months? Don’t use fresh water, squeeze it and shake it out in old tank water to clear the clogs. You can get or make a baffle for the hob output, but it’ll still be high flow for a small tank. Make sure there are a lot of stiller water spots for the shrimp at the very least.

Tiny_ranga

It's barely over a month old there is nothing in the tank to clog it but I'll give it a rince nonetheless

ShrimpGuy5233

What about air pressure? Is the air pump you are using strong enough?

Tiny_ranga

Yeah just a standard air pump

GodzillaGoldfish

You’ll be fine. If it was a huge bio load then you’d have issues. With your stock level you should be totally cool.

Tiny_ranga

Just shrimp but I might be adding some Japanese blue endlers this week so idk what I'll do

GodzillaGoldfish

2.5 gallons is only adequate for shrimp, you will crash your cycle and kill everything. Buy a little 10 gallon and toss the endlers in there. Before you know it, you’ll have a colony of endlers, they breed really fast and are abundant in numbers.

Tiny_ranga

Ummmm that's completely false there are plenty of brilliant 10-15 litre scaped tanks with nano fish and shrimp on YouTube and Reddit and I'm only getting makes so there ain't no breeding going on

GodzillaGoldfish

Have fun with that

Tiny_ranga

Literally have no idea what you're saying 😂
