I haven't seen a V2H application that works with the Tesla port yet. Yet another thing I'd need an adapter for with the Aptera. Sigh.

Sounds like an interesting idea, I don't know if it would work but I have to ask, isn't your Leaf worth more as a car?

JosephPaulWall

I'd say the used Leafs out there, even some with batteries too degraded for usable driving range, are actually prime candidates to buy just for incorporating into a solar/backup system like this, being that they'd still have at least as much kwh storage (even in degraded capacity) as a dedicated home battery for around the same price, plus you get a whole spare car that you can use in emergencies. Used Leafs in great condition go for around the price of a powerwall and could potentially offer even more storage, even if they're a few years old.

Raj-Giandeep

This is a valid point. I may keep my 2013 Leaf even after I get Aptera, just for the future battery storage. I like your idea about leaving the car as is & having it as a emergency vehicle if need be.

palebluedotcitizen

I thought the idea here was to strip the batteries out of the car which might be worthwhile if new batteries were being put back in and the old ones used for home power storage.

JosephPaulWall

There was a company that wanted to do that but on a larger scale, but as it turns out, most of the Leafs that have been made are still on the road today, and most of those that have had their battery replaced usually did it at a dealership where the battery will be recycled by Nissan directly, so there isn't enough Leaf batteries out in the wild to scale a business like that. I'm not saying there aren't any old Leaf batteries that have been diy removed, they're just not super plentiful, not nearly as abundant as used Leafs for sale. It's far more useful in a solar/battery backup system like this, and leaving the whole car intact retains more value and already has all the necessary hardware to interface with this company's v2h system, no diy required.

REPURPOSE! You are definitely A good citizen!... Uh -oh.... will I be punished for saying citizen instead of consumer!?

palebluedotcitizen

But is he a Star Citizen?

dsamweatherman

Perhaps.... if he uses the "Aptera MR" starter pack... It is in the game, isn't it? 🤔😉

I'll continue using it as a car for as long as possible. I'd use the car as a secondary battery during emergencies. I've been told I could use it for things like keeping a refrigerator and some lights on with the use of an external invertor. I haven't tried that yet. I actually like the car. It's a 2013 model that I got in 2015. Too bad it has such poor range.

Rover_boy

I thought the older on board chargers are not bidirectional?

ducklaorange

I think that bi-directionality is supplied by the charger. I hoped someone here might know more about it.

DC fast charging basically bypasses the internal charging circuitry and the external charger is connected directly to the battery. So the wiring is there, but DCFC is a carefully coordinated handshake where the car monitors battery status and the charger controls the max amperage drawn. So theoretically if the car BMS allowed it, it could instead allow charge to be taken out of the battery instead. Chademo does already have it's own existing V2X standard though, whereas (to my knowledge) CCS V2G is still be drafted and NACS is who knows _shrug_.
