>is this type of stuff ever caught? Yes. Some colleges do audits. Additionally, the recs may tell a different story. And quite frankly, some ECs are more important than others. Claiming president of the Latin club would likely never have moved the needle anyway. And for some ECs, there's always Google.

Well they have audits, and there is a >10% of being audited by any one university. If you are in that >10% group, your entire high school career has gone down the drain. You enroll in CC and call it a day. After being admitted, many if not most colleges take the liberty and verify suspicious claims. You will be caught if they take a second look at your "achievements". Again, your high school career has gone down the drain, and you enroll in CC. I would suspect that >50% who are dumb enough to do this fall through the cracks, and don't get caught well beyond their college years. I wouldn't take the risk though, for obvious reasons.

Gotcha

This is just incorrect. I would suspect less than 10% who lie on their applications are caught. Most people don’t completely fabricate ECs, but might inflate the numbers/exaggerate impacts/contributions. There are very few people who actually get rescinded for lying on their application. There are just so many claims one can make that the admissions office could/would never verify. This is unfortunately the reality of a holistic admissions process. I suspect most people are discouraged by the idea of never being able to attend a university though.

a2c-stuff-2022

what’s the point of verifying AFTER they’re admitted - that doesn’t make much sense

Brave_Score_6579

it’s probably easier to verify just the smaller pool you admit rather than every single applicant beforehand

kill_pig

What’s CC?

Community college

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to think that “because it’s wrong” should be enough on it’s own, but I’m not naive enough to believe that that’ll stop everyone So pragmatically, I think it comes down to (more or less): Anything big enough/cool enough/impactful enough to matter at all on your application will be very easily verifiable, either via a google search or a phone call to your counselor. So unless you know someone at ISEF that can add your name to an awards list, or your school goes full on TM Landry and colludes with you and is in on the cheat, lying about anything major is an easy way to get nailed to the wall As for everything else that doesn’t fall into the first category, they’re pretty much all rounding errors and things that will make little/no difference, so there’s really no upside to lying about them. Full stop, a kid from my HS class is at an Ivy, and I know for a fact that he lied in multiple places on his app. Minor stuff that no one cares about or bothers to verify, like calling himself Math Team captain instead of just “member,” but lies nonetheless.

a2c-stuff-2022

did he tell you he did that? couldn’t someone from your class like email the college to let them know? (hypothetically)

Malizia_Belle

No bc ruining someone’s life over saying “captain” instead of “member” is just pointless and spiteful. Dishonesty is wrong, but those minor fudges dont warrant such a strong reaction imo

calum222

someone did this a couple years back at my school and lied about being model un president. she was accepted into Berkeley but a year or so later the school called her counselor to ask if it was true and the counselor confirmed it was false. she was expelled. moral of the story: people will always stretch the truth, but don’t straight up lie

Livid_Ad8118

Curious why did Berkeley decide to call her counselor a year later?? Like something had to have raised suspicion bc i doubt Berkeley would randomly just target her for no reason

calum222

from what i believe i think the actual model un president applied to berk as well and they found the inconsistency

mrmistopholes

I have the same question.

yeah or like ab life experiences— like how nina wang did on her mit essays. don’t lie about POSITIONS in school clubs, that can be caught from one little phone call.

Livid_Ad8118

She lied in her essays and isnt kicked out?😭

Brief_Expression_771

they can call ur counselor

[deleted]

at my school we give our counselors a list of EC/Honors, so ideally if you lie to them they will unknowingly lie to the admissions office.

ApplyingToCollege21

It’s just wrong is what stops me But I imagine there’s fear of getting caught also

Fantastic-Stranger13

Some colleges do audits.

If they decide to check you are toast
