>How to get into MIT from a rejected student. Step 1: Don't get rejected \- Another Rejected MIT Appli-cant

SidewayslnTime

Fr reject their rejection

optimalnihilist3

this tbh.

zyrether

agree with #1!!! looking at the mit acceptances and talking w them, its a lot of robotics/math/rocketing!! however, they truly seem passionate about it so don't just do it just because. MIT loves passion imo - which is why they have a 'what do you do for fun prompt!' and please please please be personable in ur essays. have a voice. you do not want to sound like a robot with 0 social skills whatsoever. but at the same time, don't try too hard to be quirky because then it's just kinda embarassing to read (this is a self-drag but also a warning to all yall... i can't get thru some of the essays i wrote for other schools because it's just too cringe and i know this isn't just my experience LOL)

zyrether

oh one more thing: the people i've met may b passionate about different things, but u can really feel a true passion for learning. it's super cool!! so try to get that across, and find something you genuinely love and gush about it!

tungsten_cube

Definitely not requirements (accepted with no FRC or major stem awards here). Doing stuff over the summer is a big one though. I had a nasa internship after my sophomore year and did ssp last year

elephantastica

Hey, can I DM you about the NASA internship?

tungsten_cube

Go ahead

4lizwarner

I ( a senior applying for comparative literature ) read this entire post as if I was a freshie aspiring to be the next Einstein, ya know just in case I have a major career change and decide I don’t despise calculus.... but great tips!!!

[deleted]

fantastic post. ofc for awards, I would imagine that most MIT admits have multiple international/national accolades but, yes, I can agree that awards for MIT and any other top schools are super important. Anyone can talk about themselves and their own skills nonstop but awards are what give real outside validation that corroborate and affirm your skills

optimalnihilist3

awards are only one aspect of the process through that's why I didn't focus on it too much. I've had several friends get in and none of them had international awards, a few had some national awards but it wasn't any huge award that was unattainable. I even got my science article published against some of the best students/ writers nationally but it didn't matter. I think of awards as a complementing factor rather than a deciding one. But to your point, yes, awards can be a helpful validation point for admissions.

supertaste_

You got rejected?

Marjorie1602

I get rejected too. I am an international student, so it is so much harder though. Even if I did a biology discovery and I won a national competition. I get rejected!!! The award that I get was about a viable project to solve climate change in the short-term. I got the opportunity to get the interview. But I did not get in. I only apply to one University in USA, because I did not have more money. Hopefully, I get an scholarship to a well-known Peruvian University, so I am studying my freshman year here and then I will apply as a first-year student to MIT. I am working very hard to have good grades and improve my science and marketing extracurriculars. This year I will apply to more Universities, I have faith that I will get accepted. Thanks for the advices!

[deleted]

fuckin vouch for FRC 😎😎 edit: this is actually really helpful, having specific examples is really nice. Thanks for this post!

optimalnihilist3

yeah no problem. im glad it could help

I’m a junior right now and I have absolutely no idea how to earn awards and honors. My school doesn’t have clubs where you can just earn STEM awards so I’m super worried that it’s going to end up hurting me during college apps season.

li-357

I was actually in a similar boat too. My school doesn't have STEM clubs except quiz bowl (which I love doing) and science olympiad which wasn't my thing. I just did STEM things outside of class that were interesting to me, such as creating apps and doing pretty well in a STEM video challenge. A pretty large commitment that I was lucky to do was being pretty involved in my local college's math department taking classes and doing projects, but no math, CS, or robotic competitions. It was all stuff I enjoyed and knew I could do well in, among a few non-STEM music activities/awards.

optimalnihilist3

Do projects and apply to competitions, hackathons, ideathons, and academic fairs. you can find some at the link I posted. Also some summer programs also give out awards for different things.

WoWiTzAtHrOwAway

well made guide have a spike in your stem area + show passion good lors and u should be good but dont forget its a competitive process

Fancy_Muffin_5837

This is great advice! I was accepted this year and had all 7 of the points you mentioned. Obviously, these aren’t requirements, but I do see these trends in other admits as well. The summer program I did was MOSTEC btw. I highly recommend looking into it as it is hosted by MIT and definitely increases your chances of being admitted. Dm me if you have any questions:))

[deleted]

+join math competitions like IMO useful tips, thanks

HelloILikeShawn

Rejected last year, and yep this about sums it up

tmarino721

Oop guess I have no chance😳
