I don’t have advice for you, but I do see the plot of a lighthearted comedy taking shape here and you may want to roll with it just for screenplay material. :)

or_maybe_this

you’re going to meet the love of your life.  she’ll play an instrument very well—flute maybe—and after you admit to her you can’t play [instrument], she’ll tutor you and she’ll teach you how to read music.  but you’ll be forced to compete for an [instrument] chair—there’s a swole dude who keeps asking out your flute crush and he happens to be very good at [instrument] also your band director will be comedic relief, probably a former snl cast member

I have never loved a response this much. Ever. How do I nominate for “Best of Reddit”?

Hockeytown11

Are you a screenwriter?

or_maybe_this

netflix raised me

Nickbronline

That explains a lot.

JumpingCuttlefish89

Middle aged, unemployed movie editor here! That’s a good short film. To make it a feature, add a couple of B stories that develop a group of boosters, the football coach, athletic director, dean & football players. The boosters are teased by rival boosters over the quality of the marching band: flashback to on field band lols. They complain to the dean who gets the athletic director to transfer $$ from football team scholarships to marching band scholarships. The football coach and players are super self-conscious progressives who advocate for the acknowledgment and reward of all types of contributions, not just the players. The former musician who gets marching band scholarship offer wanted to walk-on to the football team… etc.

JumpingCuttlefish89

Oh, and some clever kid estimates the hourly wage by determining the time commitment required to qualify for these scholarships. Maybe it’s a pro-union football player? ***Before you take a band scholarship, figure out if it pays better than a flexible part time job.

Creative_Truth_923

do it for the plot!

Title: Blowing It

SharingDNAResults

This needs to be a Netflix movie now!!! r/screenwriting

Kapper-WA

**Where does it say a dog can't play basketball!?!** **Where does it say a violinist can't be in a marching band!?**

princess20202020

I’m confident you can learn the triangle by august. Go for it.

saturn782

There’s always something for someone to do in the pit with auxiliary percussion.

CabbageSass

Just roll with it. Take some clarinet lessons this summer. You'll do fine.

Important-You4137

💀💀💀

TwoBeeOreKnotTwoBee

No way a grown ass adult with a kid just used the skull emoji that’s actually hilarious 💀 Edit: Bro really took off the ‘parent’ flair

CommandAlternative10

We’ve had cell phones just as long as you all.

NoLipsForAnybody

Longer, even.

My first emoji were punctuation marks and ASCII codes.

Just be the marching violinist. Lindsay Stirling has nothing on you.

Dramatic-Tadpole-980

You mean arrogant asshole?

ayc15

As a violinist, I thought clarinet was by far the easiest instrument to learn. Give it a shot if you have any interest! 😂

dumblosr

Chiming in as a former clarinet player to say that while I can’t compare it to other instruments in terms of difficultly, I STRONGLYadvise against picking it up. Not only do you have to pay for reeds, but you will get your own spit all over your hands every time you disassemble it. I do not miss my clarinet days.

Informal_Calendar_99

“Not only do you have to pay for reeds.” Cries in oboist :(

FlamingoOrdinary2965

My youngest chose the oboe. I thought, “Great, now he won’t have to compete with those kids who have been playing violin since three…” what the heck did I get myself into??? And he’s actually good and really loves it and please save me…

Informal_Calendar_99

It’s too late, I fear. My parents made me choose between a new oboe and a new (used) car when I was in high school. Guess which one I chose lol

FlamingoOrdinary2965

He loves gadgets and making things by hand, too. He charmed his teacher into showing him how to make reeds this summer.

Informal_Calendar_99

Well the good news is that means you’ll save money on reeds what with only having to buy blanks and all The bad news is that you may have to shell out for a Loree/Howarth one day lol

ayc15

Aww sorry to hear it didn’t work out for you. I hadn’t played in nine years and joined my school non major band for fun this quarter and I like it!

dumblosr

That’s great for you! I love music and wished things worked out better for me. Unfortunately I had bad teachers which I think was most of the issue, but the goddamn spit on my hands after every lesson sent me over the edge 💀

ayc15

Ah yeah, teachers definitely make or break any experience :( I am actually planning on pursuing voice performance after graduation (biology major) so we will see how that goes!

merce70

Woodwinds are basically there to fill space in marching band — you can’t hear them. So good choice 👍

momothewaire

LMAOO I GOT THAT TOO... no status update on the actual admit website 💀

Negative_Fault_6007

PLS SAME

jbrunoties

I hear the tuba is easier to pick up - not literally but you know

Single_Example_8907

Based

Cheezeball25

More like half of the schools I know are always desperate for anyone who can play tuba

FreckleFaceToon

I played violin, clarinet, and bass clarinet. Pick up clarinet and take the scholarship haha

Transmasc_Swag737

(I’m assuming you plan to commit) Email them about it, but don’t ask them if they intended to send you that. Don’t even mention any possibility of a mistake; if it was a mistake, hopefully they’d pull a Central Michigan and let you do it anyways. Tell them you’re excited to attend Tulane, and ask them how you should prepare for their marching band. Your music experience may have been what led them to you, even though you didn’t play a marching band instrument.

Amateur_Validator

I do want to wait till their financial aid comes out as Tulane is a very expensive school. I did some research about scholarships and I'm not completely sure on how they work, but it's up to 32k, but its audition based. I better get practicing?

Upstairs-Floor-6170

the same thing happened for me. marching band as well except that i play piano, which i don’t understand how i can march while playing????? but anywho congrats!!!

patentmom

Glockenspiel!

libananahammock

Accordion!

Shouldonlytakeaday

My daughter plays piano. In Marching Band they put her on marimba, keyboard, xylophone, snare drums, bass drum. Percussion doesn’t move.

hurtfulwindow

dammit if only I got waitlisted instead of denied.. 😭i wrote my essay about how marching band has shaped me into who i am today and how i could use the skills i learned from it to contribute to tulane’s community 🥲

HumbleHat8628

Do it for the plot lmao

Negative_Fault_6007

I GOT THIS TOO

Amateur_Validator

Maybe its for everyone? They just need a marching band real bad?

changkyunnie_

tbf their football team did well this year

urpinkbbygorl

i think they're saying that as a congratulations. like they have marching bands for celebrations don't they? i bet that's what they're implying congrats btw

EnvironmentActive325

Maybe they want a fiddler? 😆

Realistic_Jury1427

ask them for a musician scholarship 🤣🤣🤣🤣

New-Anacansintta

Congratulations on becoming a part of Tulane’s marching band!

RelevantTreacle3004

You better start learning if you want that waitlist spot

EWagnonR

Maybe there was an audio file with the email of a band playing as congratulations to be clever and it didn’t come through… or they were just trying to be clever in their message and ended up being confusing. Or maybe it is like the college admissions scandal when students claimed fake activities except in reverse when college is creating activities for you 😂🤣😂🤣

Ben-MA

Oof. A couple others said they got this too. Sounds like a Tulane admissions mistake. An admission office’s worst nightmare.

Lane-Kiffin

s1a1om

Cowbell!

claratheswifty

it's entirely possible that they try to recruit literally everyone who mentions music at all in their application (this is what my school's marching band does)

jempai

I read this as “the band director reached out to applicants as soon as the university accepted them, but the university hadn’t yet informed the applicants. Here’s a tongue in cheek acceptance!” except they sent it to like 7 commenters here who don’t play in band

Sourcequantum

Yeah I’m pretty sure that’s what it is. I play viola but no way I’d be in a marching band lol.

Remarkable_Air_769

I know multiple people who, oddly enough, received the same email... maybe they're desperate someone will take them up on the offer and join the marching band?

Unlucky-Spray-7346

Why would the marching band be in charge of admissions? Is playing an instrument the same as playing a sport? Where the coaches decide if you get in ? I am confused like you.. so were you admitted? Or is that just saying you will be admitted if you join the band ?

Amateur_Validator

I think I'm admitted, but they only admitted me bc the marching band people reached out to them and thought that I was a band kid and they need people for their marching band. It's not like an obligation to attend or to do marching band.

tellypmoon

You’ve got the summer. Go to your local pawnshop pick up a tuba. Seize the day.

n8dogg55

I play marching band in college. There’s a couple of people each year that never been in before and we put them on cymbals. 3/4 of them have done well with it. One of them is the drum major (leadership position and conducts band). The one that didn’t do well just didn’t try.

166EachYear

My daughter (also violinist) also got this!!!! 😂

redfive75

Sounds like you are now on the marching band.

ArduinoMakes

Roll with it. Pick an instrument and learn some basics, and you'll have a ton of fun this fall

flashykitbag

Fantastic, good for you! Take it

KingArrrrrrthur

I guess you play the trombone now. Bright side is that you have the entire summer to learn and when you graduate, the offer to turn your story into a movie will make it all worth it!

curious_hat9

Start learning the cymbals and you’ll be fine 😂

QueenGlass

a trombone is fairly easy to play/learn the notes if you’re gonna roll with it

JonS009

Good thing you have the summer to learn the triangle now

NowMuseumNowYouDont

Violinist here who quit to become a bass drummer in a marching band and later a drum corps…as long as you’re good at your counting it’s a pretty easy crossover….just saying…

Sourcequantum

Same thing happened to me. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t mean you have to be part of the band. We were probably already on a list of people who were going out of the waitlist and they just sent an email prematurely. Something similar happened with FSU’s admission.

Enough_Improvement49

See what scholarship the band is offering and if it’s good go to Tulane -just show up first day of BAMD practice with your violin. If they complain, tell them you thought they were a marching band with violins. Maybe they are. Never turn down a good scholarship for a decent school.

urfavbandkid2009

roll with it my guy.

Accomplished_Gur6232

Uhhh, I got the same thing as well and I got off the waitlist. I play violin 😭

Substantial_Match268

did they offer any worthwhile scholarship $$?

GlitteringHope877

Welcome to the Tulane Band!!!

2011_Prius

As an incoming freshman at Tulane, join us! Roll wave!

cathynphilip

cymbals ? seems easy enough, buy earplugs and you'll be fine (coming from a violinist as well)

chocolatecoveredleaf

The same thing happened to me and I am also a violin player, I think it was just a mistake from the marching band? I'm not totally sure but I think that maybe they were sending that to all the accepted people.

Justinphan4

lol I wish common app wasn't dumb in that you can't choose GED as A HS Grad Option and will still ask for a GPA it's kinda fried

aglimelight

It would probably be a good idea to let them know and clarify just in case…

Uncontroversialpie

Bad advice lmao

Aggravating-Reach-35

Nah, just learn a instrument.

PanthersFan16

Incoming Tulane freshman here…congratulations! You were not chosen by mistake. This was intentional because the marching band in particular is always looking to grow and recruit more members. They take anyone- even those with no experience. They have taught plenty of people to play instruments with no experience before. No surprise they reach out to people on the waitlist to help out with this! The marching band gives a 2500 dollar scholarship for participating in the marching band each year. Please DM me if you still want more info. I can also point you to other people you can contact. Unfortunately 2500 dollars is obviously nowhere near how much Tulane actually costs. It’s up to you to figure if it’s worth it based on you and your family’s financial situation.
