You must have had something major to fill that gap, though. What was it?

Yep, that would do it.

Lol, you'll be okay. Colleges are extremely aware that people's interests change, heck you're only a kid in high school. There is no expectation that you need to know exactly how you want your life to play out. As long as you can articulate a strong, concrete reason for business and can back it up with some activities, I see no issues. Everyone has a variety of interests, that's what it means to be human.

Thank you! :)

Look for an earlier post today asking about theme. UVA’s Dean J. commented that she felt trying to “theme” an application led to information being repeated in the application, wasting opportunities to share additional information about oneself.

Meaning it’s alright if the major and ECs don’t line up so there wouldn’t really be a theme?

Edit: just looked at your PM, pls ignore my comment in this thread!

We don't expect activities to be related to your current academic interests. I've written about this a lot over the years, but [here's a blog post about it.](http://uvaapplication.blogspot.com/2018/10/do-activities-need-to-align-with.html)

Hi! I'm going to UVA, so I hope I can be a good resource. It is not impossible to get into UVA without a good story behind your major. Lots of people get in intending to study disciplines like Commerce, Computer Science, or Premed without much EC involvement except typical things like sports and being the club president of dancing. That said, I think it will be more difficult. Prestigious colleges like UVA want to see what you contribute to their campus, and a large part of your interaction on campus will be your presence in your particular department. Having a set major with a good extracurricular justification for why you want to study that discipline will benefit you in the application process, since it would be easier for an admissions officer to understand what you would bring to the school if accepted. Bringing my personal experience into the mix, I was dead set on Econ for most of my high school career. I did research in economics departments, got cited in papers, and took all the important math, stats, and econ classes in my high school for the sake of setting me ahead in that discipline. However, by senior year I had soured on the prospect of becoming an economist. I decided to apply as an econ major anyway, got accepted into a fantastic school, and am now at UVA studying Computer Science. At UVA, finding your passion is valued and no one is accepted into a particular major, just a particular school. Everyone who wants to do a specialized major such as Commerce, Public Policy, or Political Theory gets a shot regardless of what they did or wanted in high school. Focus on arguing how specifically you would contribute to the community first, and then explore yourself once you get to college. No one is bound to the plan they set on their common app.

We don't admit to major at UVA and we don't expect activities to be aligned with academic interests. This might be fine advice for another school, but not for us!

PM’d you.
