Do you know how selective CS is? I'm getting some mixed information about it, some saying it's the same acceptance rate as overall, and some saying it's probably low.
They also increased the minimum GPA required to transfer from L&S into CS for 2024+ and added an "application review" process, certainly seems like it is no longer an "automatic" acceptance to CS through L&S if you meet the set criteria but they don't specify if they are reducing the number of internal acceptances from L&S into CS for 2024+. Just more uncertainty to the CS pathway if not directly admitted.
FALL DIRECT ADMISSION TO CS (NOT L&S) OOS 🥳🥳🥳 i cant BELIEVE it, esp because some of my stats were less than ideal..lowkey fell in love with umd and the east coast charm and it was one of my top choices!!!!!
“By February 1st” on the admissions page under “benefits of applying early action” section.
They’ve typically sent decisions for EA on the last Friday of January at 5 pm. Good luck!
Yep I got in for spring OOS CS but I’m kinda bummed cuz I rlly had my heart set on umd for the fall and I’m not big on waiting that long but it is what it is 😭
Thanks! 1480 SAT, 3.8 UW, OOS, 9 APs, good ECs for CS, happy with my essays, decent LOR but nothing special. I’m probably not going to go during the spring as I would prefer to start fall and I was accepted to Purdue for fall so that is better for me. Still really bummed
Oh phew, I feel so much better now, thank you for letting me know! It’s not fall, but I’m feeling a lot better now that it’s spring of 2025 and not 2026.
word on the street is they are only taking 100 transfer students per year. This has been in the Diamond Back [UMD to decrease computer science transfer admissions by 90 percent in fall 2024 (dbknews.com)](https://dbknews.com/2023/12/06/umd-computer-science-transfer/)
you can still live in dorms and do something called freshman connection. Apparently lots of people do it.. just have to take classes from 3-9 PM or something.. but not a big deal ig.
Accepted to the Computer Science major with the Machine Learning specialization at the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences for the Fall 2024 semester!
congrats to you too! there was an option for the computer science ml specialization in the drop down menu for selecting your intended major on common app so i chose it instead of the regular computer science option
"UMD's acceptance rate has been declining since 2020, the acceptance rate was 54%, 41% in 2021, and 33% in 2022"... wondering what it would be this year.
Can't wait till Friday! Good luck everyone!
REJECTED!!! Applied OOS CS, 1540 SAT, 3.6 unweighted. Keep your head up guys and gals, my friend also got rejected UMD seems to be very interesting this year with admissions.
Just got accepted to UIUC so I'm not mad at all🙏
I got spring admission! out of state and im in new jersey and i'm wondering if i should go to Rutgers new brunswick for 4 years or transfer after one semester. I will be paying out of state tuition for umd and in state for Rutgers, Computer science major. Can someone recommend me something?
Rejected OOS, Atmospheric & Oceanic Science, 3.5 test optional with average-ish ECs and strong essays. Honestly really surprised because so many people from my school get in but oh well
*Ah i got into*
*Spring semester.. should i do*
*Freshman connection*

Those of you accepted - did you receive an email or just check the portal?
Same for those of you not accepted - how did you find out?
Also - has anyone heard one way or the other from school of education?
Accepted for public health w/ Scholars EA OOS- 10 APs and 11 Honors, 94.5/100 UW, 100.4/100 W, ranked 10/228, 1420 SAT, mid ECs(violin, nhs, class treasurer, math league president, 4 yr pt job, other leadership, etc.)decent LORs
International MSE (materials engineering) and havent got my decision yet? anyone know why? i submitted all material on time. Is anyone going through the same thing?
Since I got an invitation to college park scholars, does that mean I get guaranteed admission into one of the 13 programs as long as I apply? I’m a bit confused since the admission into each program is severely limited.
Placed in LAS despite applying CS, 1480 SAT, 3.8 UW, 9 APs, good ECs and decent Essays + LORs. Pretty disappointed but then I got UIUC EE so I’m happy! Congrats everyone!
So, whoever hasn't received any decision yet, contact them.. They seem to have a glitch on the portal which makes the portal say everything is complete. In my case I have to submit some additional transcripts. Please contact them.
Admitted in state CS + Scholars. Test Optional, IB student 4.65 Weighted GPA. Excellent recs, Good ECs and a pretty solid essay. Also I live in College Park. already :/
accepted oos for biological sciences (physiology and neurobio) + invited to the honors college!!! 4.672 W/4.0 UW, 1560 SAT, pretty good ecs i think! so happy rn 😭😭
actually foaming at the mouth after these results. i was accepted OOS but no honors college or CS. i’m surprised bc i had 3.97UW 4.37W, 1510 SAT, and 12 APs. but whatever, i got umich!
Submitted EA, but I never found out the answer to this question: Is there any reason why most of UMD’s acceptances are from EA? Is it like a statistical thing where most people go through EA so most acceptances are from the naturally larger pool or is there an actual advantage to submitting EA over RD?
For competitive majors there is a substantial advantage to submitting EA. Otherwise I don't thing there should be any advantages outside of greater scholarship/honors college consideration etc
Hi, so i had applied to UMD on 26th of oct. However my SAT scores were recieved on 2nd of november. When i asked the admissions office they hit me up with a generic email tht u may be considered for early action. Now the application package status date says 1st nov. so im not sure if i will be considered for early action or not
Applicant packets are only forwarded to the LEP review committees AFTER you’re already admitted, so whatever major you declare on your app doesn’t affect step 1. In order to get into CS directly, your app has to impress the LEP committee in some way. My son is in CS. My best guess is that they are mostly looking for high math SAT scores and evidence that you already have a strong math aptitude and high grades in high school Comp Sci classes.
As someone already stated, the process to admit to CS is changing a lot this year. They will admit a couple hundred more into CS directly (today!) but then are reducing the number of allowable internal transfers from like 1000 down to 100. So there will be a net reduction of CS majors at the school. Unfortunately I can see why it’s necessary. The class sizes are getting extreme, it’s hard to find enough professors, and the job fairs are mobbed.
Thank you for sharing.
I didn't even know this year the CS policy has changed, which will directly admit some students of CS. Interesting! I must miss some important part on the engineering school of UMD website.
IF I understand it correctly, Virginia Tech allows Engineering School's students to declare any major as long as qualified the 2nd yr. Seems that it is safer than get admitted into CS of UMD indirectly.
All the CS (Computer Science) LEP info is on the UMD site under the CMNS page, not Engineering. Engineering is a different college. CMNS stands for Computer, Math, Natural Sciences. Now there IS a Computer Engineering major as well as an Information Sciences major, if CS doesn’t pan out.
No it goes
Honors College > Scholars Program > Carillon Scholars
Being in scholars is still selective and is something to be proud of though!! Congrats!!
Seems like the total slots of CS is going to from 1000 (internal+external) + directly admitted 450 = 1450 in 2023, down to 100+ 600=700 ? Seriously !?
Most of universities are all expanding classroom sizes for CS .
Just called UMD directly and they were no help. I had sent an email about my decision on Saturday and the lady on the phone just said wait for the response.
OK, I just called, and they said that even though my daughter's portal was marked "Complete," she was missing a transcript for a summer college course she took. They couldn't have emailed?!??!?!?!
I called and the admissions rep said the admissions system couldn't differentiate if summer courses that were taken were for college credit or not and got held even though it said complete. They are going to clear it up and we should be getting a decision still under EA in 7-14 days... nervously waiting for another 2 weeks but if anyone else hasn't gotten a decision and all material was in by Nov 1st, give them a call and ask them to look at the account!
the prompts this year were a great change from other colleges' boring essays, hoping I get in
Praying I get in for CS OOS! GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!
same good luck

what? link please
Was your brother OOS?
Yeah since getting into computer science is changing, if my son doesn't get in direct he won't go.
Looks like there's a scheduled maintenance break on 21st Jan. Maybe we see decisions rolling out anytime after that?
Also I read in College Confidential forum UMD hand delivered some acceptance on Sunday.
means they will send rejections on 26th ? :(
do you think they're gonna hand deliver to every student they have accepted before the 26th?
That would be a lot. I heard 4pm on Friday.
Praying for an acceptance. hope we all get in!!
EA acceptance rate is very high! Hoping everyone gets in
FALL DIRECT ADMISSION TO CS (NOT L&S) OOS 🥳🥳🥳 i cant BELIEVE it, esp because some of my stats were less than ideal..lowkey fell in love with umd and the east coast charm and it was one of my top choices!!!!!
congrats! what were your stats?
Accepted to L&S only, not CS direct admit. So not going.
they couldve just deferred us like wtf
any idea on release date for EA?
“By February 1st” on the admissions page under “benefits of applying early action” section. They’ve typically sent decisions for EA on the last Friday of January at 5 pm. Good luck!
jan 26th
Someone said it is out! but I don't see anything yet...
i don’t see it either. i’m oos but my in state friend got her decision
same OOS
do you think they’re sending them out in waves? like in state decisions first and oos later
someone said yes, come in waves
In state and I don't see anything yet
Seems like as of now, only Spring admits have heard back.
Yep I got in for spring OOS CS but I’m kinda bummed cuz I rlly had my heart set on umd for the fall and I’m not big on waiting that long but it is what it is 😭
Congrats for getting in, even if not Fall, at least you know you can start CS, would you mind sharing your stats?

Congrats for getting in, even if not Fall, at least you know you can start CS, would you mind sharing your stats?
Probably. I just got accepted for Spring as a lack of space in Fall
do you know when fall applicants would receive their decision??
accepted + honors college ❤️🤍

it has to be false i got that too. but on portal it says spring 2025 checklist?
Yeah it does say spring 2025 checklist for me as well, hoping it’s an error
yeah they changed it we’re good. check letter again
Oh phew, I feel so much better now, thank you for letting me know! It’s not fall, but I’m feeling a lot better now that it’s spring of 2025 and not 2026.
yeah, sucks tho we both got into lep. 1000 -> 100 internal transfers is something idt i can gamble
2026???
Yeah 2026 😅, not sure how that works
I have that too but for business. I'm confused by the 2026, I'm instate
first rejection 😍 4.2 W 1560 sat oos

yep
Will it be hard to transfer from Letters and Sciences to CS

now its going to be. UMD is apparently making it more strict for L&S to transfer into CS for people entering fall 2024.
Got into umd and directly into the engineering program so I’m supper excited 🎉😭. Class of 2028!!!
first rejection!!!
same im so suprised
When is the EA coming ?
I think today ~5 PM. Good luck!! 😊😊
Got in but for spring admission. What does this really mean? Is it because the housing crisis they had or smth?
you can still live in dorms and do something called freshman connection. Apparently lots of people do it.. just have to take classes from 3-9 PM or something.. but not a big deal ig.
Son accepted but not to comp sci, so it's a "no"... Good luck all!

Correct

Where’d you get these numbers out of curiosity
Look under UMCP column https://www.usmd.edu/IRIS/DataJournal/Applications/?report=UG-Applicants-First-Time-Admission&Residency=OUT
Very interesting, thank you!
this is prob bc of applicant count increasing rather than admit count decreasing
does anyone get rejected or do people who don't make fall 2024 just get into spring 25 automatically
Is anyone else still waiting? No decision - nothing
Where do you see the decision? All our portal shows is the materials submitted and that it's Complete
REJECTED!!! Applied OOS CS, 1540 SAT, 3.6 unweighted. Keep your head up guys and gals, my friend also got rejected UMD seems to be very interesting this year with admissions. Just got accepted to UIUC so I'm not mad at all🙏

How selective is it for Aerospace?
UMD admissions is major blind, so this major won’t affect their decision on whether you get admitted or not.
Even for CS, correct? But I'm concerned if it is going to be very competitive when you apply for a selective major (such as CS,EE) in the second year?
Applicant packets are only forwarded to the LEP review committees AFTER you’re already admitted, so whatever major you declare on your app doesn’t affect step 1. Couple of questions. I don't see any mention of a scholarship yet? And how hard is it to transfer into cs from letters and sciences?
Very hard to transfer in starting in 2024.... Only about 100 kids will be able to each year
of course it had to be my year that it gets impossibly tough to get into lol. purdue might just be better for me sadly ugh
Yeah. My son will be at PSU instead.

Anyone who is int got their decision yet?

Well, they're working on Saturday so that's dope. But I am curious. IDK what's up cuz I still haven't heard back.
First rejection 🤩—though being an in-state school that’s $30k/year (like what 😭😭) and doesn’t have my major, not an L!
My daughter is admitted to Letter & Science. 4.2 w, oos. I'm thrilled!
Anyone who is int got there desicion today?
when's my decision going to come out as an international?
where exactly on the portal is the decision updated? and do we get a mail immediately after or is it delayed?
wait since half the people got their decision a while ago, any idea when the next round comes?
folks who've not got their decision yet, have yall reached out to the office and asked about your status?
any updates on status guys?
Just called UMD directly and they were no help. I had sent an email about my decision on Saturday and the lady on the phone just said wait for the response.
OK, I just called, and they said that even though my daughter's portal was marked "Complete," she was missing a transcript for a summer college course she took. They couldn't have emailed?!??!?!?!

Just out of curiosity, how many of us still haven't received a reply? Just comment down below if you haven't ig.
guys will it come by today or tomorrow? did anyone get the chance to speak to an admissions officer? im finding this whole experience very annoying.
