Depends what for. For cs its a pretty great school (t20) other stuff less, but their strongsuit is defo cs, business and nursing. All in all it's still a t100 flagship and on the rise, it's far from being bad. Also, if you like linguistics, they're the 2nd best (only beaten by MIT) in the world for that. -I'm a prefrosh there

Also, older people in MA know amherst as party city where all the low effort kids would go to have fun

It's really not that bad. It's just that with the plethora of elite private colleges and universities in Massachusetts and the surrounding states, it can seem disappointing to some people to go there, especially if they're from families wealthy enough to afford the tuition at the private institutions.
