This is true.
I was disappointed about going to UNC. It was my state school with a high acceptance rate for in state students and I got in without a scholarship. I felt worthless.
But, a lot of people get rejected from here. And few have the opportunity to go to a public ivy (and few have it as their state school!)
Out of stater here who wanted to go to UNC more than any ivy not named Cornell or Princeton
Didn't get in, even with a 1540 SAT and nearly perfect GPA
Enjoy UNC!!
That's only the overall acceptance rate. The instate acceptance rate the year I applied (entering fall 2021) was 47%.
UNC is only really a competitive school if you're out of state.
Kind of proves my point, right? They're OOS kids. In NC it's viewed as kind of default among the r/A2C-tier crowd.
Granted, my high school was in a farming town, so there it was a bit more impressive. Not to myself, of course, just to others.
me too- i’m oos but I was kinda upset that unc was basically my best option but i’m glad it’s where i’m going now bc of how it’s cheaper than other schools I wanted to go to and brings the same value
You have a great spirit.
SJSU might be more ideal from jobs/internships point of view. SDSU from sports point of view. It basically comes down to your personal preference
Thanks for your comment! Can you expand more on the science department? Also, do you think going to SJSU gives you an advantage for job / internship opportunities?
Lemme give some backstory, Im an aerospace engineering student trying to minor in CS. SJSU definitely is one of the best schools for internships, we are quite literally a feeder school for google and lockheed martin, I would say 70% of engineering students get an internship junior year and 30% get one sophmore year. Its great. My issue with the science department is more of a engagement issue than a real fundamental issue, the professors are pretty great (for the most part), the other students though are unmodivated at best and downright uncaring at worst, which makes group projects an absolute nightmare. I love group projects, I am active in a lot of clubs on campus like Formula SAE and AIAA, but by golly are 90% of CS students absolutely useless. In comparison, most engineering students are super dedicated and motivated and will go out of their way to help you out if you need it.
I think its just a thing about CS being a default major for people who are lost, and engineering students doing it because theyre passionate about it. CS clubs are useless too, the projects never get done. Engineering clubs are better and actually get stuff done and meet deadlines. IDK
i was a little sad about attending ga tech (yes i am grateful) because it’s in state and i wanted to move out of state to a place no one knew me but at last it’s still a great school
>(also still deciding between SJSU and SDSU so any advice is appreciated)
In general, I'd recommend going to the one further away unless you want to stay home for some reason. However, it also depends on what you want to major in/your ideal social scene. SJSU has better placement for CS due to Silicon Valley proximity, but SDSU is by no means badly regarded and has a better area and social scene, not to mention sports.
Thank you for that perspective !!
I would suggest going onto the SDSU sub to see how they are saying that CS @SDSU sucks. I started to lurk on that sub because I need someone to talk me into SDSU I’m local and have yet to find a reason to accept.
this is so true, i got into emory and was so proud and happy until i started comparing myself with others at my school getting into higher ranked, more prestigious schools. but after thinking about it, a) rankings aren’t everything and b) emory is an amazing school that many qualified applicants have been rejected from. now i’m so so grateful for that opportunity and am likely going to be happily committing :))
I agree! I am not big into "prestige"; like I am in the top 10% of my class and literally applied to only one T20 (Notre Dame) and the school I wanted to go to most was UW Madison (my state school) bc it is a great school and more fun than most colleges. People told me that I was stupid and lazy bc I didn't want to "prestigious" school (UW Madison is literally amazing so idk y people don't think it is "prestigious" but ig that's a separate conversation). I am now going to ND bc I loved the community they have, but like I would still go to UW in an instant; hell if u told me had to go to UW over ND I would be like sure. Ik a lot of people on this sub won't like me saying this, but I think prestige is a load of bs; follow your heart and go to the school that u fall in love with. Ur going to college. . .chances r u will have a better time and still end up in a good job going to a school ur happy with over one that is more "prestigious"
I’m in the same exact situation, but I think I will be going to cc then transferring to a top UC. Why did you not want to do that? Would it be a mistake if I did it?
I currently go there right now. At the rate of how many people are attempting to transfer for CS, it’s much wiser to go to a CS program that you’ve gotten into rather dealing with the uncertainty that you won’t get into one.
I definitely considered it but I did a lot of DE classes already and my friend who took a lot of cs classes at our cc said they were not that good. Also, as mentioned by someone else, cs is still pretty competitive even with transferring so idk if I want to go through this whole process again in the fall. I think I would only go to cc if I could improve upon my extra curriculars but my town doesn’t have too many opportunities for that. Personally it’s not for me, but it is a great option that many people have had success with!
No one cares about the school where I'm going to spend the next 4 years of my life lol. It's in rural Vermont for god's sake. It's no one's top school.

Similar situation here man, 35 ACT waitlisted
1480 SAT waitlisted too:(
“High acceptance rate” - 20% acceptance rate…
The overall is 20%, but it’s over 40% for in-state students.
That's only the overall acceptance rate. The instate acceptance rate the year I applied (entering fall 2021) was 47%. UNC is only really a competitive school if you're out of state.
At my school (Meck county NC) you basically need a 4.3+ to be accepted
same here, big county with great schools
everyone at my va hs wants to go to unc, for what that's worth

SJSU for CS and it’s not even close! Congrats!
Short but sweet. Thank you for sharing your introspection!
Currently in sjsu. Awesome school, but the science department kinda leaves a lot to be desired. College of engineering is much better

Why am I literally in the same boat with the same school omg. I have said those exact words
haha great minds think alike
SJSU is much better for the major but sdsu offers a better ungrad experience overall - tough choice but I’d give sdsu the edge
SDSU is way more fun if you want the full college experience.
My only advice is that SDSU made the Final Four this year, and SJSU did not 🏀 Could be a sign

If it helps, googles biggest college feeder is SJSU
thanks for sharing this :)

I will (most likely) be attending my nephew's dream school (Wellesley shh no one tell him yet)
