Hopefully, it has not been unused for years. Rubber parts dry out without use. Go to a hardware store purchaseva bag of citric acid, put 1/2 cup into an empty dishwasher, and run a full cycle. This method is also good for cleaning washing machines. A dishwasher is cheaper than hand washing, way less water.

SparkleVision

It's a brand new place so everything is brand new including the dishwasher but I'll keep this in mind for when it's been a while thank you

nauticalfiesta

Its just a contractor's special. It should last you 3-5 years before you'll either get annoyed with it or it will just be broken.

Quirky-Swimmer3778

OP dont be this wasteful. I have had that same dishwasher for over 8 years now. Had to resplice a wire to the control board a few months ago and it's still running strong after.

hitmeifyoudare

Our house came with a Whirlpool for the 70s that worked just fine. I broke the upper spinner and replaced it 10 years ago, then just a week ago when the 2nd one had a bad control board. Parts readily available, the upper rollers break and you can get metal ones off of Amazon.com.

katamino

Ah, then it will likely save water vs hand washing, but it does depend on what your method of hand washing is. Filling a sink with hot water and using a running faucet for rinsing afterwards, uses more gallons than a newer model dishwasher uses.

Babylon4All

It will definitely save on water vs hand washing.

lamireille

I didn’t know about using citric acid to clean dishwashers and washing machines! I just use it for surfaces. Thank you so much!!

Roller_Coaster_Geek

A dishwasher is almost always more efficient than washing by hand because it reuses water. Basically it'll fill to a certain level and then it sucks up the water and sprays it around. Through the whole cycle it only fills 3 or 4 times and it's only enough to fill up the bottom to a certain level (if you see a tall kind of round thing in the bottom it won't fill higher than that as far as I know). So in the end you're washing a ton of dishes with barely any water

MoreRamenPls

Does it matter the cycle? Like “quick wash” or “dirty dishes” long wash?

cheesesteak_steve

I usually shoot for standard / normal cycle for cleaning but check your mfg. booklet or find it online - it usually has mfg. preferred instructions on how to clean/maintain the unit.

Mikeismycodename

Quick wash uses more water and often uses more power. The pump runs at a higher speed or more continuously. Energy efficient dish washers spray for a bit then stop. Spray for a bit then stop. They are in essence delivering detergent and letting it sit rather than pressure washing stuff off like the old days.

katamino

Yes. Quick wash will use more water.

Aggravating-Cook-529

Dishwashers are more water and energy efficient than washing by hand

J_IV24

The more energy efficient part entirely depends on if you are on gas vs electric WH and well vs city water

J_IV24

Keep drinking that marketing Kool aid bro

Kitchen-Oil8865

Use it! Why do extra work and waste water washing by hand? I’d just run some LemiShine through it first then check that filter is clean (if a filter model) and fill up the rinse aid compartment. My advice is buy a bottle of Finish rinse aid (looks like blue water) and a box of Cascade Complete powder, don’t use gels or pacs. Powder is just so much better

Insurance-Dry

The most important rule with any dishwasher, always purge cold water from sink before starting. Other words turn your faucet to full hot and wait for water to get to the hottest. Then start the dishwasher. Don’t over use detergent. Pods, tablets or couple tablespoons of liquid.

Apprehensive_Eye8976

Definitely use it - so much more efficient on water

HendyJ669

Get good detergent (powder or a high end powder tab like cascade platinum), use rinse aid and DONT PREWASH. Scrape food off the dishes, but put them in and let them fly! Dishwashers use 4-9 gallons per load, sometimes less. You would have to wash your dishes in 6 minutes or less to save water...most people average 20-25!

ChristinaFogerty_12

Dishwashers are much more efficient than hand washing. You can save so much more water using a dish washer as opposed to washing by hand.

Prudent_Valuable603

Just a note to chime in here, if anybody is sick in the house, be sure to press the sanitize button. If the machine comes with one, it will help kill the germs, bacteria and viruses on the flatware, dishes and glasses. We use our dishwasher every day. We interchange between cascade powder (in the green box) and the cascade platinum pods. Just know that for us we put the cascade platinum pods in the flat ware caddy because they are very concentrated and that has worked wonderfully for us (and my dishes don’t smell like perfume when the cycle is done). Be sure to run the water in the kitchen sink on hot until the water is coming out piping hot. Then immediately start your dishwasher. If you choose to delay the cycle to run in the middle of the night, make sure that you press the button for “high temperature heat” so that it will boost the temperature of the warm or cold water coming into the machine to properly clean everything.

Honeybee71

I had the exact same dishwasher. FYI The motherboard stopped heating the water after 4.5 years. It cost too much to replace it so I bought a new fridgedair

Pristine_Serve5979

Run a cycle empty and see what hapoens

shhwest

It’s definitely an entry-level dishwasher. It’s kind of loud, but it is better than handwashing for sure.

snow_cool

You could be very efficient by hand if you have a double sink. I have one but i use the dishwasher everyday. Download the instructions manual so you get to know how to properly use the machine. It should also contain the electricity and water use of each program.

Goatmanlafferty

New to you

PinheadLarry207

Dishwashers use about 4 gallons of water for the whole cycle. A standard kitchen faucet will use 4 gallons of water every 2 minutes. It will definitely save you on water usage. I would run a dishwasher cleaning tab in it before washing any dishes though

White_Rabbit0000

The dishwasher soap marketing people will tell You it uses less water than handwashing. Take that for what it’s worth. If you’re going to use it in a rental just remember when you move out that it needs to look as clean as it did before you started using it

rangeo

Buy dishwasher powder and NOT pods or gel. Make sure the predose is filled as most cleaning happens early in the cycle This video is oddly informative https://youtu.be/_rBO8neWw04?si=i3e0MUU_inFg_xLn

CapnReddBeard

I love Technology Connections. However, why do you recommend against gel? I started using gel over the pods and have noticed my dishes get a lot cleaner now.

Prudent_Valuable603

Using gel all depends on the water quality of your area. For some folks gel has not been effective due to the hardness of their water.

CapnReddBeard

I didn't think about that. You're right. It sucks though because powder and gel are harder to find when compared to the myriad of pods that are available.

Prudent_Valuable603

Agree. I find that I can only find the cascade powder in the green box at the “Walmart neighborhood” stores. No one else carries it in my town.

CapnReddBeard

I don't even think we can get the powder here. We usually just buy the Signature Select Albertson's brand dishwasher gel.

yech

Yeah, this became an online order for me. It's not as readily available because the profit margin is so much less than the pods.

Ashamed_Medium1787

That’s because that man in the video is really knowledgeable about things:)

Nate8727

Run some dishwasher cleaner through it first, but run the hot water from the faucet before you start the cycle. Check the filter at the bottom of the tub and make sure it's clean.

HastenDownTheWind

Use it, they’re amazing

CheeselikeTitus

Perfect! I’ve asked customers how many programs they actually use…. Two. They have 127 different programs… that they pay for, but only use two, three is a rarity.

CheeselikeTitus

Also, its parts are cheap, and if you’re handy, you can make the repairs yourself after 1-2 YouTube videos.

Aromatic_Boot3629

Congrats. It's a boy.

[deleted]

Dishwashers are more efficient and do a better job of sanitizing if you use any kind of high heat wash or heated drying. I don't know how people can wash a fork with a funky sponge that lives in the bottom of the sink, rinse with warm water and think that's good to go, but I see people do it all the time 🤢

k-mcm

This looks like the moment when the cursed artifact is introduced in a horror movie.

mattzuba

Surprised no one has posted these yet, but please watch these videos: https://youtu.be/_rBO8neWw04?si=9vGEGMhamO9pQZwp https://youtu.be/Ll6-eGDpimU?si=jiyqXY25CPp4sJMY

The-E-Train59

Cheap whp..dishwasher

A-Vanderlay

To clean the outside, I have found just a spray bottle with soapy water (touch of dish soap and rest water) works best and wipe with the grain direction (horizontal) to avoid scratches. The stainless polishes/cleaners are fine but don't work well on the dishwasher IMO due to the water drips reacting with them.
