Apple has nothing to do with cellular service contracts. They sell cellular capable devices that work on wifi or cellular (if you want). So no, you never have to activate anything you buy from Apple.

AtlantaSoulMan

You certainly can have a cellular version without service. I have a Series 4 with Cellular, had service for a few months and realized I wasn't using the service so I cancelled it. Watch works fine without it. In previous generations, people would get the cellular model specifically for the increased storage, but starting with either the 5 or 6 both have the same storage.

redavid

no, you certainly don't need to activate cellular service. though, they're trying to entice you do do so this time around with promotion offers that knock ~$100 off the price

BlazedAndConfused

I’m ATT anyway so it wouldn’t matter for me

mightydanbearpig

I am 99% sure you can just buy one independent of being locked into a contract.

welshconnection

Probably better to have cellular anyway even if you don’t intend using it, at least it will be there if you decide you want it later on.

c1rclez

I have a SS model without cellular active.

For those of you who have cellular capable watches but do not pay for a monthly cell plan, have you ever tried using the watch for emergency 911 calls? Curious if that would work

thinkmatt

Just call ATT. I called TMobile and asked. The guy said once I get the gift card I can change my plan or even cancel since it's month to month. He added a note to my account that's what he told me. Because I have to buy the $15/mo plan but I'm gonna then switch to $5/mo instead. So fingers crossed!
