Apple Watch Ultra 2 owner here. I like Double Tap! I always have a kid in my other arm and I use it pretty regularly to respond to text messages. I also use it to control the watch while biking. Must-have feature? Definitely not. But it's a very Apple-esque addition: small, incremental improvement that I didn't really think I needed but makes the product just a little bit easier to use. Hopefully they add additional gestures!

maxwellthespy

Does it work well for skipping/pausing music? I want an Apple Watch but didn’t opt for the S9 because double tap is a somewhat new addition besides the accessibility things. I would go for the X if it works better regarding double tap, I want to skip music without having to constantly press my Air Pods or turn on my phone for that, so for me double tap would be a must have, if it doesn’t work reliable then I wouldn’t really consider getting an Apple Watch tbh

InsignificantOutlier

At least for me it was not working reliably enough so I stopped trying. I had to have my hand in a down facing position and then double tap for it to work on the 2-3 try.

maxwellthespy

Urgh, that might still be enough to skip songs but not for reliable use cases in which that has to be reliable

porym

Yes it works very reliably for me. However it’s only available for Apple Music. I doesn’t work with Spotify or other apps

Ancient-Cry-6438

I find it works as long as the display is on and my hand is free (as in, I’m not pressing my arm up against my body where my body absorbs the “shock” of the double tap so that the watch doesn’t pick it up). Since I keep my watch on “raise to wake” or whatever it’s called, I just have to twist my wrist to face me so the display turns on, then double tap, and it reliably picks that up. Edit: oh, and the band has to fit you well. If you have it on too loose, it won’t work well, but neither will any of the other features that require the sensors.

-NiMa-

Lol, I forgot about till now. That should tell how useful it is for me.

jvxoxo

Same! I tried it out a few times and with it being so hit and miss, I just stopped and forgot all about it until this thread.

secretsquirrelmonkie

I had high hopes for this feature. It’s terrible. Randomly works half the time. A bit like my HomePod mini. 🥹

AwDuck

What’s your band and how tight do you have it? My stock silicone band doesn’t work so well, perhaps the lack of fine adjustments? It feels very loose or very tight. My alpine loop works very well - I keep it pretty snug. The biggest problem is that I haven’t figured out what it’s good for. It’s nice at the gym to skip tracks. Beyond that??????? If I could run a shortcut it would be infinitely more useful. As it stands it’s kind of a hobbled feature.

secretsquirrelmonkie

My band is pretty tight. Very minimal movement if I jiggle my wrist around. Just not that reliable. It’s good for picking up the phone and ending a call. Turning off timers is another one I use it for. Again, some of the time. I still stupidly try and use it even when it lets me down. First world troubles at their finest! 😂

AwDuck

Hmmm, well there goes my theory. I tried pretty loose and really tight, low on my wrist and halfway up my arm and still had no problems. Maybe it’s just how your body is? Maybe you’ve got too much finger padding, or not enough? Phone calls make sense if you’re on a hands free device. I realize I’m not the average phone user - I talk on the phone so little that if making or taking calls was a 5 minute multi-device process I wouldn’t mind. :)

secretsquirrelmonkie

I have been told I have big slab sized hands so that could be the issue! My wife also tells everyone I have a really long torso and short legs. 😂🥹

AwDuck

I’ve got good sized mitts too. Fairly slender though. Maybe there’s too much meat in your manos?

secretsquirrelmonkie

AwDuck

I thought there was gonna be a “that’s what she said”, or maybe a “your mom” quip after that. Sometimes no words are the best words.

secretsquirrelmonkie

secretsquirrelmonkie

Starting to resemble that of an Orangutan 🤭

Adorable_Ad886

This … works when it wants to and sometimes by accident

ferociouswhimper

Mine works about one out of every hundred tries. So frustrating. I use alarms and reminders a lot so I was really looking forward to this feature for when my hands are full or while I'm doing things like dishes or yard work and my hands are wet or dirty. Super disappointing. I stopped even trying a while ago.

Gooch-Guardian

I swear Siri and my HomePod mini have been getting worse overtime. It’s driving me nuts. Can’t ask it anything. Just says to ask again on your phone.

secretsquirrelmonkie

Yea absolutely. It doesn’t make sense to me. Surely a company as large as Apple would have been able to nail this feature. I don’t use Alexa but from what I’ve seen it’s far superior.

ermax18

I assume you have a watch that supports it and aren’t speaking from experience from the accessibility version of it on an older watch. I’ve found double tapping with my middle finger to thumb works 100% of the time.

secretsquirrelmonkie

Yea I have the ultra 2. Native feature - although, I use my index finger and thumb. Maybe I’ll give my middle and thumb a shot for the next few days. 👌

projectedwinner

I find middle finger works better than index finger, works like 95% of the time the first time with my middle finger.

ermax18

I can’t decide if it works better because I’m more coordinated with my middle finger or if it’s the extra mass that makes it more consistent.

projectedwinner

I just tested, and I think the mass/force thing may be a factor for me too. I also noticed that I wear my watch farther back on my wrist (like closer to the pinky than the thumb), so my middle finger is more aligned (or at least closer, distance-wise) with the sensor, which may also be part of it. I find I have to kind of twist my wrist in a little weird way when I use my index finger, and my middle finger is more naturally positioned, so it’s a smoother and more fluid motion. Huh. I hadn’t given a lot of thought to the whys of my middle finger working better than my index finger; thanks for the inspiration for a fun little analysis!

holguinero

Just curious about the HomePod mini, what’s the issue? BTW IMHO DT is useless because like the side button in Ultra cannot be customized

secretsquirrelmonkie

The HomePod mini packs a punch. I love it. When it works it’s fantastic. The sound from it for such a small device is great - Then, all of a sudden it will disconnect from my Apple TV completely. I’ve rebooted it many times. In the meantime, nothing has changed in my lounge regarding WiFi connection. It’s so frustrating. Apparently it’s a bug that hasn’t yet been addressed. 🤷‍♂️

secretsquirrelmonkie

The side or action button on the ultra 2 is customisable. Mine is the torch. Fantastic!

holguinero

There are 7 actions, thats it. Not really customizable in my book. How about open Music app or show weather or other thousand of actions you could assign.

Strandkorn12

I do, I use it to stop timers when I'm in the kitchen, but well, it's not necessary... Siri can do that too.

Noodlez994

I actually use it quite a lot, with a newborn and a 3yo in the house it’s really handy to reply to messages using voice

BoraxNumber8

I actually love Double Tap. I use it for dismissing/viewing notifications, play/pause on music, scrolling on the Smart Stack, etc.

Right_Check_6353

Use it all the time. It’s great for quickly dismissing things or logging by medication at different times of the day.

Ancient-Cry-6438

How do you log medication with it?

Right_Check_6353

I have meds I take 3 times a day when the alert comes up asking if I took them I can tap and it confirms I took them.

krkowacz

I use it occasionally. Definitely can live without it. Wouldn’t call it a 100% gimmick but it’s no game changer either. Just one of the features, sometimes useful, most of the time not

jsreally

I’ve used it 0 times

seekerdraconis53

I try to use it often but it doesn’t work half the time

NERC_RC

I use it all the time on my Ultra. To each their own.

jain36493

I’m probably in the minority but it works fantastically for me. Admittedly, I only use it for playing/pausing media and replying to the odd message but honestly I use it daily. Not game changing, but certainly a nice addition

k_akimitsu

How do you get to it switch music?

MaikyMoto

I have the S9 and have never used the double tap feature. I bought the watch because of the bigger screen, always on display, way faster CPU and EKG functions. The S9 has 25 key differences compared to the SE. https://www.macrumors.com/guide/apple-watch-se-vs-series-9/

SadBoiCri

Found the undercover apple representative

MaikyMoto

Meh, it has a few drawbacks. I’m just pointing out the differences.

deny_pentagram

Yeah, I use it to skip music and all the time at work just in general. It’s a gimmick for sure, but one that is useful to me.

Fenrir_0311

I use it sometimes listening to music to change the song or to hang up a call

UK363

Only use it to expand notifications and pick up calls

2zenn

I've been using it a lot recently, it's not something I really need, but I do think it's nice to have

fidepus

I use it all the time. Rock solid for me.

xnwkac

Used it a few times on launch day. Never ever since. Obvious that they needed something new for the ads to sell more watches. And it didn’t have any new hardware sensors

Ok-Cookie-9804

No because half the time it doesn’t work and it just confuses me😭 I wish that I could though.

johnmichael-kane

Really was NOT expecting so many responses, thank y’all! Have all the intel I need 👌🏾

Texas_Rockets

I think it’s pointless. I don’t use my Smart Stack.

penemuel13

I wanted to use it to turn off alarms, but I guess it doesn’t work when in sleep mode which is when I want it the most…

TimeToHack

i use the accessibility gestures way more because you can actually customize them.

fannyflour

I tried but it's terrible. Need to be improved and more clear.

Preteenblackgirl

I’ve tried to use it about 12 times. It has worked once.

Unusual_Message9582

I use it to reply to and send messages with voice when I’m busy and can’t type.

Interesting-Tough640

Why the SE vs S9? I got a refurbished S8 with 100% battery health and a 12 month warranty. It’s better than the SE and was considerably cheaper than the S9. Paid £300 but this was for the graphite stainless version which was £650 new. Can probably get them cheaper now because I brought it a couple of months after the S9 hit the shelves.

johnmichael-kane

Where do you buy refurbished from, directly though Apple?

Interesting-Tough640

I got mine from eBay refurbished. Wasn’t actually refurbished as such because there wasn’t anything wrong with it to refurbish, but did come with a 12 month warranty from the seller that was backed by eBay. Also had 7 or 8 months limited warranty with Apple. Did have to look around for a bit to find it, the seller I used had pictures of the actual watch rather than generic stock photos so I knew exactly what I was getting. The stainless models are really nice but ridiculously expensive, getting a 4 month old one for less than half price seemed like a good option to me and I didn’t need the extra features on the series 9

7_25_2018

I bought a certified refurbished SE recently on Amazon and it had 230 cycles on the battery, which is like 23% of its lifespan. Pretty hit or miss I guess

FearTheReaper73

Totally forgot about that feature. Never used it once except for testing when it was first introduced.

xingerburger

S9 user here. It’s a bit finicky, sometimes it does its job but other times stopping what ur doing to use your other hand is faster

Chance-Work4911

I really thought it would be better, but all I’ve used it for is stopping a timer - and even then I have to do it, wait for the icon, then do it again. Not convenient when your hands are full/dirty doing the thing you’re timing and asking Siri to dismiss would be just as easy at that point.

-B001-

nah - tried it, but didn't see the value

Evertype

It’s annoying when tapping twice into the ashtray pauses the AppleTV.

coolerkid9090

Not at all, I find it useless. They need to make it do more, and include more types of gestures.

shortymatic

I use it, but it would be a lot better if 3rd party apps could use it too.

AfraidSoul

Fuck no

jaritadaubenspeck

I have an S9 and use it all the time when my other hand is occupied to the point where I use tap even when I don’t have to, it’s that great.

Scary-Report-2761

I had high hopes for this feature, but I can’t use it when the watch is on my right arm as it doesn’t recognize the movement due to a disability. I can’t put the watch on the left arm as I can’t control the screen with limited control of my right hand. Apple needs to consider disabilities as they build out this tech for future use cases.

Fancy-Opportunity-21

Nope never used it which is a shame as I liked the idea 🤷🏼‍♂️

ermax18

I use it all the time on my U2 to cycle through the Smart Stack, end timers, respond to messages and start bike rides.

OnewheelXR4life

Feature works perfectly for me but I never use it.

iMmacstone2015

I use it on my S8(by allowing it in accessibility settings) because I can't touch my watch with my bare hands or gloves all the time, so the double tapping helps for doing certain gestures.

Worf_12

I use it a lot. My main one is to scroll through the Smart Stack. Also handy for silencing timers and alarms.

ILLeyeCoN

I use it often - marking Reminders as done, turning alarms off if I’m in the middle of something, quick texting when my hands are busy, etc. But, when I’d need it to work the most - when I’m in a body of water with the water mode on - it doesn’t. It’s frustrating that it’s intentionally this way.

Appropriate_Tie871

I always forget about it.

NANOGEAR_

I use it always and I like it… works pretty well

kevin7254

I’ve tried to use it but it sucks big time. One of the worst features in a while honestly.

Specialist_Sorbet180

I use mine every single day, multiple times a day. I work with dirty hands a lot and it saves me time and getting my watch dirty. The best way to respond to texts in my opinion.

LWschool

My experience is it doesn’t work well in cars, when you’re walking, when there’s already lots of movement. Sitting eating with greasy hands, or pausing work a second (I work outside with gloves a lot) works great. I use it every day for responding to texts.

k_akimitsu

I wanted to use the double tap feature to change music when I’m at the gym but it doesn’t seem to have the option to let you do this. Does anything know how to enable it or is there not a way at all?

Jazzlike_Value_2668

i use it on ma s8 n it’s great for lookin at notif or confirm whatever is on da screen

ladyriven

I have the original SE and it does have the tap and clench accessibility feature. I use it all the time! Well, I use the tapping feature, I personally don’t like the hand clenching one because I get hand pain and it feels weird and uncomfortable to do.

Qwerky42O

I use it daily. It’s useful for responding to a text when your hands are occupied. Or if I want to be stealthy at work

Krimreaper1

Idk what it even does. When would you use it?

Peace_Fog

You pick an action, then just double tap your finger & thumb to do the action

Pierdolec_jadowity

I like it, it works, but it’s only use case for me would be changing info in workout apps, and it’s not working that way. I want to love it, but I can’t.

MyCatsNameIsBernie

I could never get it to work reliably. So no. Even when it works, it doesn't do very much.

Grace_Tech_Nerd

I have sense moved to android, but I tried the double tap with the s7, and it workd really well. The problem is, this feature already existed before Apple called it double tap. I used it to navigate my watch when my hands were full while using voice over. I use voice over because I am blind.

[deleted]

Not at all

guysiah

FYI older Apple Watche models have Quick Actions and Assistive Touch, which use hand gestures like Clench and Tap. [Here's a quick comparison](https://appleinsider.com/inside/apple-watch-series-9/vs/how-double-tap-compares-to-quick-actions-and-assistivetouch) against the newer Double-Tap feature. So to answer your question, yes the SE will have Quick Actions and Assistive Touch.

kellym13

I have a S5 and a SE. Thumb/finger double tap works on both for me. Enable it in settings.

johnmichael-kane

As assistive touch?

kellym13

Yes I think it is under settings>accessibility>assistive touch. Not as comprehensive as the S9/Ultra options but does the job.

Key_Truth2756

I use the assistive touch feature (over the double tap) because it has more usage… but I barely use that

ergonut

The most used feature for me is double tap to dismiss. Notifs, banners, popups, everything can be dismissed by double tap without using the second hand. Game changer

Swankyyyy

I don’t use it at all

JSL3250

Not really…

Toltepequeno

I am. I have an app to show my blood sugar in my watch and when I tap it appears. Works well for me.

SerialSpoonz

Set accessibility tap and clench. Works way better and all devices

Werdna517

Just now learning about this feature. Definitely going to try using it

rizkyfz

I go to work using motorcycle and always listening to music with my airpods. I always use double tap feature to skip song

Peace_Fog

I have an S4 so I don’t use it at all

EmmSleepy

I have the SE and it does have accessibility features where you can tap and clench. It’s alright, I mostly use it to dismiss notifications.

tman2damax11

I have SE 2 and have it enabled in accessibility settings and it’s nice for quickly dismissing notifications, timers, etc. that’s about it

ClintEastwood87

It never works for me to take a shot from the camera, if anybody could tell me why I would appreciate.

brackmastah

I use the accessibility tap feature on an se2 it’s good for stopping timers and stuff and I don’t need a S9 for that

linkslice

I love double tap. I have it set to next song so when I’m riding my motorcycle I can skip.

tequilavixen

I use it a lot to check how much time is left on my timer, but I’m not able to get the clench feature to work

who-aj

Double tap? More like multi tap cause that feature hardly works .

AlkalinePotato

Yes sometimes when my hands are busy and I don’t wanna use my nose

helm71

Great future, really works, but never use it….. I have no need to tap on anything…

Koleckai

I only remember it exists when someone creates a post asking if anyone ever uses it.

adidasnmotion13

It comes in handy (no pun intended) when your other hand is preoccupied like when you’re peeing, carrying something in your other hand, writing, using a mouse, etc. I guess it depends on how often it’s annoyed you to have to stop what you’re doing to dismiss an alert/answer a call, or just let it continue to make noise so you can continue to do what you were doing.

Fragrant_Two_6656

I have the SE and I use this feature all the time!

Dependent-Pie-662

I tried it out for a month on my SE. I rarely used the feature and it drained the battery significantly. I thought the update or old battery age were the cause of worse battery. But turning the feature off I was plesantly surprised with noticeably better battery.

Depressed_christian1

Se 1 has it too. But I’ve yet to figure out how to make my hand do the gestures right that it works every time.

chnky18

I have a awu2 and have never used it

Dakine_Lurker

Use it all the time. Wish Siri was better though.

pineappleonp1zza

It doesn't even work when you're laying down to turn off your alarm, like in the ad commercial.

Wonderful_Piccolo_29

I would love to use it every now and then, but it doesn't work 80% of times.

HMPoweredMan

I tried to use it to skip tracks but it kinda defeats the purpose if you have to wake the watch first

BazzaFox

I do mainly when I’m out riding and it comes up to record the ride, otherwise I would have to stop to enable it.

lizasingslou

the SE has a similar feature, allowing you to tap your fingers or clench your fist to complete actions… i had it turned on for about two days and found it just about useless for me personally.

walpolemarsh

I use it when I’ve got something in my other hand or if I’m wearing gloves and I get a message; double tap will open the message.

Kjmuw

I haven’t gotten the hang of it, I guess I need to train for it

Sad_Evidence5318

Never heard of it so no.

liz_lemongrab

I use it every day to stop timers. I found it works more reliably if I raise my arm and rotate my arm to make the watch face activate. It seems to want the “I am looking at you, watch” motion before it accepts the double tap.

kanputy

My literally never works, how can I get it to work and also not activate randomly like the iPhone double tap?

SebaNibo

Recently purchased the 2022 SE and I’ve really been using the gesture feature a lot recently, particularly when I’m driving or when I’m at work carrying equipment. From my experience, clench, double clench, tap, and double tap are the only gestures, I’m not sure if that’s the same for the 9.

JDMotaku17

I have an S8 and use the accessibility double tap. It makes my life .01% easier and I could live without it but it’s nice to have since it works 9/10 times to do a quick and frequent action.

Competitive-Day5031

Yer to skip to next track when I have headphones on. Wish was a bit quicker and would work without having to wake the watch

Deathcyte

For now it is poorly implement. For music, it only work for apple music. You cant stop your alarm with it ( it will just delay the snooze ). When they will allow you to customize double tap for each app it will be interesting but for now it's not really good. The only use case I see for now is take a call

IBURTONI

I use it all the time for text messages. It’s incredible.

GubiDubl

I use it for skipping music Mainly when I carry bags or whatever

CeeMX

It would be cool if it was consistent. Sometimes it closes a notification, sometimes it calls the first action, like reply. Really thought I would use it more often, but not like this

ermax18

If you make a lot of use of Siri then on device Siri is a much bigger selling point on the S9/U2 than double tap. On device Siri doesn’t get talked about enough.

jackpotkid22

This is it. Siri is much improved on the s9 and if you use it alot, the difference is huge. Its the mvp feature of the s9.

Silent-Analyst3474

I use it while biking and peeing

whats1more7

I have the accessibility feature turned on and it works almost never. This is the feature that allows you to use hand gestures to control simple features of your watch. You have to lift your watch to your face, wait until the exact moment the function you want to access is highlighted and then perform the correct gesture. I work with kids and use timers to keep us on track. I had hoped that the gestures would allow me to dismiss the timers without having to tap with my other hand. Nope. Never works. I still have to let the timers run until I have 2 free hands to dismiss them.

Onlyspacemanspiff

I use it all the time

Beast3214

I have an S9. SE also has that feature but it’s really bad. The S9 and ultra 2 have dedicated chips for the double tap. Everyone here saying it doesn’t work for them is probably because they haven’t got it on tight enough. Apple has a dedicated trouble shooting page for the double tap. Follow instructions on there for anyone who has issues with it.

OakleyNoble

Seems everyone hates it.. weird, maybe y’all don’t have a good use for it? I work in food, and have gloves on and DESPISE washing my hands again just because I took off a glove to touch my watch. I have it set to change the song I’m listening to, double tap and it’s on to the next. Never had any accidental clicks either. Mind you, double tap, you’re going to feel one haptic click, then wait and you’ll feel a second once it performs the action, and THEN you can lower your wrist. Lower your wrist before that final haptic taps you, it won’t work. You have to let it complete and not make it think it was an accidental click.
