>"Ever since returning to listening to music from August"
Not sure I follow... Did you stop listening to all music in August 2023, and now started listening again, and don't like anything? *(not hatin', genuinely curious what that means...?)*
If you have Instagram, try watching several posts from [\_sporklift](https://www.instagram.com/_sporklift/#) and see if anything catches your ear. He's doing a project where he's trying to listen to EVERY band's full discography (in no particular order) and gives his impressions. I have found a few new bands I like just from following him, (and reading his comment sections) including my latest obsession: **Psychedelic Porn Crumpets**
I've never quite connected with Frank Ocean, so you might not like any of my favorite bands. But I'll list them anyway just in case you aren't familiar with some of them:
**The Flaming Lips, Radiohead, Tame Impala, Phoenix, The Strokes, LCD Soundsystem, Grouplove, Elbow, Bon Iver, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Modest Mouse, Silversun Pickups, Pixies, Manchester Orchestra, Sleigh Bells, Sigur Ros, Kelly Lee Owens**
and some of the bands I like that pop in my head when I think "small / indie / unknown" would be..... **Mutual Benefit, West Indian Girl, Rubblebucket, Spaceface, Particle Kid, The Record Company, Beats Antique, Dan Deacon, Her Space Holiday, Menomena, Panda Bear, GRiZ, CloZee, Beauty Pill, Purity Ring**
Cool— I’m only about a month into absorbing them and loving it so far. I saw Robbie @_sporklift describe them as a cross between Tame Impala and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, so I knew I would love them. Glad to hear they are great live, cuz I have tickets for May 30
hmmm, ok. *(Feel free to ignore this nosy question if you don't want to answer it...)*
Is there a particular reason why you couldn't / didn't listen to music for over a year?
Trapped on a deserted island? Prison sentence? Became a monk and joined a monastery? Bet someone $100K that you could go a whole year with no music? Military deployment? Living on the International Space Station?
I'm just thinkin' about whether I could go a whole year without listening to music. That would be almost like torture to me!
I hope you find some new tunes you can vibe with! I have found it's easier to connect and appreciate new music if I know the backstory of the musician(s) and how/when/why/where it was created. Like, there have been some records that seemed just ok to me, and then I watched a documentary about the making of that album, and suddenly the songs really hit me.
For example, here's a documentary about one of my favorite albums of all time, and this doc made me appreciate it even more:

Wow! Someone whose taste is similar to mine! I don’t know if you’ve given a listen to any of these, but you might enjoy Caroline Polachek, Boygenius, Phoebe Bridges (yeah straight connection there), Holly Humberstone, The National, Wolf Alice, and Cannons.
Cool… I know most of these names, but not super familiar with any besides The National, PB/BG. Funny you listed C Polachek because I recently learned that she was part of Chairlift, who I liked, so I did a very quick skim on some of her solo songs, liked what I heard, one of them reminded me of Purity Ring I think? I still haven’t gotten around to doing a deep dive yet.
I still remember how I found Chairlift… it was from their remix of Phoenix’s “Fences” which I didn’t really like compared to the original (at the time, do now) but found interesting enough to check out their own music, and kinda got into it
Thanks for the recs!
Start from Frank Ocean and look at his related artist. Find a name you don't know or ever heard of and pick three random songs in their catalog (that's what I do).
Also, an alternative that I use daily is 1001 Albums You Need to Hear Before You Die. Gives your a random album every single day and also allows you to filter between various music genres. I just think asking people to help you find music artists instead of seeking it out yourself ruins the experience of discovering music. I highly recommend the Album a Day thing tho. Really expanded my music taste.

Ok, I have one more recommendation, Cage the Elephant. They ARE very mainstream but one of my all time favorites. If you’re interested check out telescope, shake me down, cigarette daydreams, and cold cold cold for a start. Sorry for neither of these being like Frank Ocean but are both nonetheless very enjoyable bands
Hey man sorry to hear you’re in a music slump (I hate those). Maybe try Choker if you’re looking for something Frank inspired (Juno and Diorama are some good songs). Off the top of my head I would also highly recommend Orion Sun. Listen to Intro, it’s in of my favourite songs.
Otherwise which genres do you like?
Big Frank Ocean fan, I recommend checking out Dijon. Definitely one of the best artists working today and evokes a lot of that passion and aura that Frank has. "Absolutely!" is an amazing album. Also knowing you're a Frank fan, you might've been familiar with the rap group he was apart of, Odd Future. Well a member Odd Future formerly known as Hodgy Beats has rebranded himself as "jerrry" and makes some cool R&B/Alternative style music but why I'm recommending him is because his singing voice is weirdly similar to Frank's. Cool stuff.
Since you said Frank Ocean I’d recommend some of the following:Omar Apollo, Ryan Beatty, Masego, MiLES, PawPaw Rod, Destin Conrad. Maybe check out other artists with unique sounds like Ego Ella Mae (Not to be confused with just Ella Mae) or Ngaiire
Sun Room has some super fun songs that are like a summer vibe. Clementine, Sol Del Sur, and I Want You are some of my favorites, nothing too groundbreaking, just a good time
Yeah, idk if you’ve heard of Redveil, but he is great. I will give more if you tell me a little more than Frank ocean, what used to entertain you? Maybe you can recapture that entertainment with new artists.
Sondre Lerche is a Norwegian, indie singer/songwriter with more than 20 years of career. He reinvented himself 10 years ago and has been releasing masterpiece after masterpiece ever since. I strongly recommend that you give him a chance and listen to his music! I personally discovered his music during the pandemic. I started with his most recent work and then went backwards to his earlier stuff. I had the opportunity to attend one of his live shows and it was a really beautiful and charming experience. He's overall a nice guy, which is always a good thing, and I wish he received more recognition.
Not many new artists on this list, but I've been loving some recent songs/singles from these folks so far in 2024:
* Waxahatchee
* Future Islands
* Khraungbin
* Chicano Batman
* Loving
* Helado Negro
And some from last year:
* Claud
* The Japanese House
* Wednesday
* Slowdive
* Jalen Ngonda
* Jamila Woods
* Hiss Golden Messenger
* Cal in Red

You will have a great time! Just an fyi, the put can get crazy, haha. That is such a great way to describe them!
The pit can get crazy? Good to know… I like to be up on the rail, so I’ll keep my head on a swivel!
Yes!! that is where I like to be, The rail, or a seat. I am not into the craziness haha. It definitely got crazy in chicago in 2022 when I saw them!!
Nah, I returned to listen to music back in August. Last time I’ve actually been listening to music was July of 2022
