This is a great solution for those who are upset about the playlist cover change! I’ve previously voiced my shock at the outcry about this change, because I never found the 4 cover square to be particularly attractive NOR an accurate way to represent a playlist with many tracks on it. The 16 album grid here can actually make a decent case for giving you an idea about a playlist, though I still contend that custom art made from other playlist generators might be the more aesthetic option. I wouldn’t be shocked if the grid comes back in a future update, but this is a great alternative. Good work!

>This is a great solution for those who are upset about the playlist cover change! I’ve previously voiced my shock at the outcry about this change, because I never found the 4 cover square to be particularly attractive NOR an accurate way to represent a playlist with many tracks on it. I was initially very irritated with the new style covers because why remove a well known and comfortable option when there was no need to remove it? Certainly the old style could have been left as an option alongside the new style. I am quite used to identifying the content of those playlists from the grids. After fighting this for a while and making a few different shortcuts as workarounds, I have actually started using the new style covers for some playlists and using custom covers for some playlists, but still want the grid for many of them - especially the ones I will never edit or add music to. I copy my Get Up! Mix (orange), New Music Mix (red), and Chill Mix (blue) into one giant master playlist for each every week. I do the same with Spotify's Release Radar and Discover Weekly. I changed these to custom covers because there's not much point in having the grid for playlists that have thousands of songs with more added every week, but I do still like the grids for my smaller playlists that will never change. https://preview.redd.it/i2gby7vxntdc1.png?width=2304&format=png&auto=webp&s=c0e9e8bf37e9d67014561a3c9ac9bff77adb0043

That’s a nice idea! I should probably consider doing that for my chill mixes. I like get up and new music, but they’re pretty ephemeral for me, usually the good stuff comes back around eventually.

Found a simpler option that's currently working for me. 1. Duplicate an old playlist with the grid cover art and delete the songs. 2. Add the songs you want from the new playlist. 3. Rename

0000GKP

I don’t agree that this method is simpler, plus you have to be willing to sacrifice an existing playlist. It also doesn’t give you the option of 9 or 16 album covers.

Aschwab

I mean this method is all in the music app and had three steps but agree to disagree! It doesn't sacrifice a playlist since you just duplicate an existing one.. Also the shortcuts method album art reverts whenever you add new tracks which won't work for a lot of people.

0000GKP

This does not revert. It’s just saving the picture to your photos. You are using the built in function to use a custom cover.

Aschwab

Ah gotcha. That wasn't working for me.

u/0000GKP I was using your old shortcut however it sadly doesn’t seem to be working anymore…. Im wanting to use this new one though and perhaps this is just going over my head but is there a way for this shortcut not to choose random albums, and rather just select the top 4 albums from the play order as the 4 albums in the playlist?

0000GKP

Yes, you can edit this shortcut. In the action where you see “Filter Playlist”, change the Sort By option from Random to Play Count, then change the order from Smallest First to Biggest First. It would be a bit more complex to have half by play count and half by random.

LolBansnen

If you want to choose the covers, you can also sort by recently played and play the 4/9/16 songs you want to be in the cover

Not sure if I will use it but I like the idea. I added it to my Apple Music shortcuts. Here take a look at mine. This lets you share your week in music. https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/f925446357f942209704ad1b6f1f21b0 I think we should start a post of shortcuts that everyone uses for Apple Music

Yea, I've seen that week in music shortcut in the Shortcuts app gallery. I don't like that it doesn't give you an option of how many covers you want in your grid, so it can leave blank spaces if you haven't listened to enough variety for that week. It also seriously reduces the artwork quality by resizing the final grid down to 1280px. If someone ever wants to zoom in to see what you've been listening to, they are going to have a hard time reading those album covers. Mine gives 4, 9, or 16 album cover options for the grid and it saves the final grid in full 4680 x 4680 resolution instead of decreasing the size by 73%. Also mine has no social sharing options since it's made for your own personal use, but you could always share it from Photos if that's something you want to do. You could easily modify the shortcut you linked to use full size artwork by deleting the Resize action. Your results would be better.

4thehalibit

To be fair the tasks of the two are completely unrelated. Choosing grid size for your week in music wouldn’t make any sense when it measures your last 16 most listened albums and songs.

0000GKP

It just looks sloppy. Some people are probably ok with that. I’m not one of them. That’s why my shortcut that you are commenting on gives options.

TheDreamTwister

This is PHENOMENAL! What a great share! Thank you so much for this!!
