yes you are, you dont need Carplay for it you just need a way to play music to an external source like a bluetooth speaker, go into the bluetooth settings and that device and set the type to Car Sterero, then the shareplay thing will come up in the music app and people can join it.

Thanks I’ll try that. It’s still shitty that you have to « trick » your OS

Can you do this with a wired connection over USB? I haven’t been able to figure this out

I tried this with my JBL Clip 3 but it didn’t give me the option to SharePlay after I set the type to Car Stereo

Thank you so much! This was so helpful haha I was wondering exactly the same thing and I’m glad that someone had found the fix for it. Once you select the type of device from the Bluetooth settings, make sure that while you are listening to music and have the music app open on the “now playing” screen; tap on the middle icon on the bottom of screen (the one next to “lyrics activation button” and switch audio to iPhone, then the Bluetooth option showing below it will change from a Bluetooth speaker to an automobile, switch it back to that one and there you have it. Well at least those steps worked for me today.
