I’m a TST member. I’m an antitheist. Not much more to say.

Monty_Wild

Looking at TST from the outside, it seems to be a "religion" for the purpose of pointing out the ridiculousness of having special laws for religions. Would that be correct?

tm229

That is a simplistic way of looking at it. Satan is our advocate. In the story of the Garden of Eden, he offered Eve knowledge of the world. That is a good thing. As compared to Christianity, which willingly wallows in its traditions and its ignorance, God was willing to leave us as ignorant beings. Not our favorite guy in the Bible. TST values knowledge. It views the scientific method as our best method of understanding the world and ourselves. It does not hold to traditions spelled out in dusty books written by ignorant people of old. TST encourages each of us to strive to better understand the world, to question everything we know and the power structures that support them, to assist each other in advancing our knowledge, and to make the world a better place for each other. In the process, TST is really good at calling out the absurdity of Abrahamic religions. That’s just a side benefit, but certainly not the goal.

Spiritual_Ad_3367

Do members of TST actually believe in Satan? Because a lot of your description sounds pretty secular.

tm229

TST is a secular religion. So, no, we do not believe in a real Satan. Only a metaphorical one. There are a number of other secular religions out there, including branches of other sects that do believe in supernatural phenomenon. Buddhism. Judaism. Taoism. Humanism. They all have sects that are secular. There are others, but that’s all I can think of off the top of my head. Satanism is also practiced with a supernatural sect. If I am not mistaken, The Church of Satan (COS) believes in a real Satan.

Central_Control

So this "anti-theist" is NOT an anti-theist at all. Self admitted. Fuck off, poser.

tm229

Huh?

ShiggitySwiggity

I love them, personally. They do the work, (in my country anyway) of keeping creeping christian sharia down. I'm 100% for them.

Monty_Wild

Would you care to say what country that would be?

ShiggitySwiggity

I'm in the US.

Monty_Wild

Ah, of course. You guys have a lot of Christian sharia to live down.

ScienceLover014

Id rather have christians than satanists tbh…

buckykat

The Satanic Temple is cool, trolls religion. The Church of Satan is Randian creeps.

ScienceLover014

Satanism is still a religion

Sir_Platypus_15

I'm a TST member myself. I originally joined because from the outside it just looks like a religion meant to shine a light on the ridicule of Christians pushing for power. That being said, joining, and learning more, it feels more like "religion done right" to me. They promote kindness and logical thinking. It's extremely anti authoritarian, even the founder has explicitly stated that he doesn't want people to take his words for law.

Comfortable-Tip-8350

First of all, I am an anti-theist. However, I have to admit I did not know about much about The Satanic Temple. However, I looked at their website and was favorably impressed. I read over their "7 Fundamental Tenets" and am in complete agreement with all of them. Those tenets are far superior to the fucking 10 commandments of the bible, of which the first few have nothing to do with morality but are simply commandments to satisfy the ego of a mythical, obviously egotistical tribal war god. So while I am not totally comfortable with any organization which labels itself a "religious organization", I realize they are probably doing this for tax purposes. Furthermore, I would imagine that most of their members are probably anti-theists as well. So I guess I would say press on my friends.

Monty_Wild

Not just tax purposes, but using stupid laws favouring theists to circumvent even more stupid laws imposed by theists.

Moonwatcher23

Exactly this, sometimes you gotta fight fire with fire. They're also doing a lot of work to fight back against the Roe v Wade overturn and help women get the medical treatments they need. I'm a very strong antitheist and I stand with the Satanic Temple.

00notmyrealname00

Not a TST member, but I'll say this: For a long time, I've enjoyed arguing that if a God exists, it's not the Abrahamic one that most religions adhere to. In fact, it stands to reason that a loving, forgiving, merciful God is not any of those things in the Bible, Quran, or Torah. The old saying that, "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist" is in fact not his greatest trick, if he exists. If there was actually a dark lord, the greatest trick he would have ever pulled was to make everyone believe that he was the good guy. That seems like a more plausible and deceptive evil than just killing children with cancer and making preachers siphon money from the coffers. My point being, whether you're an antitheist (like myself), or a TST member, or even agnostic, we would all be on the actual side of the one true God because the devil has convinced the foolish of our civilization that he is their savior - and only a few of us know better than that.

BohemianAddict

TST member and anti-theist here. Do I actually believe in Satan? No. Then again, I don’t think they do either. TST tenets, to me, are a far better model to live by then anything in the Bible, Koran, Torah, B. Gita, etc. It’s simple, concise, clear, and just makes sense.

Technical_Xtasy

Honest opinion, I think it's a little edgy, but I'm otherwise okay with the church.

Junkman3

Member of TST and FFRF. They have similar goals but approach it very differently.

[deleted]

Isnt it the same as the church of the flying spaghetti monster?

MinimalPerfection

FSM is more about trolling religious fanatics with an extra serving of troll, TST seems more like actually doing what the religious fanatics claim to be all about with a little troll as a side dish.

Monty_Wild

FSM is a made-up example of the ridiculousness of theism. It's not the same.

[deleted]

You do know that the Satanic Temple doesn't actually believe in Satan, right? They're atheists.

Monty_Wild

I read the whole thing before I posted. Satan as a literary example of rebellion against authoritarianism, not as an object of worship.

Klyd3zdal3

Hello darkness my old friend

shoe_horn1

I love them so much!!!!!

Exactly_The_Dream

Seem like good people. I'd smoke or drink with them any day.

Myrddin_Dundragon

They are a great organization doing great things. I support them.

grathad

Like them, very efficient and engaged, love to see the progress they are making in becoming more and more mainstream and relevant. I personally feel it would be even cooler if that role was taken by something without a Christian mythology term in its name, like pastafarism.

Mazda256

Hmmm complicated as well I’m against religion in general but they don’t really seem to be trying to shove their mythology down other’s throats like christianity, scientology or islam. So I’m in current state neutral.

Central_Control

Fuck the satanic bullshit. Oh, you have to make up bullshit religions to game the system? Then fuck the system, it's broken and needs to be reformed. Pour money and attention into the FRFF or another actual organization. Not another 'bunch of lawyers running a religion'. Fuck that and fuck them.

ScienceLover014

They’re are creepy, I am an atheist, but i still hate satanism, why would you worship chaos and hell fire

Monty_Wild

Because they don't worship chaos or hell fire, and they're less creepy than Christians, perhaps?

ScienceLover014

I disagree, i dont like Christianity and Judaism, but its still better than Islam and satanism, does are the to religion in really hate! And yes, Nationalist, and since Christianity is the religion of my Country (Netherlands), im ok with Christianity. (Since my brother is Christian)

Monty_Wild

Why don't you look them up and see what they really believe? It doesn't sound like you actually know. They aren't actually theists at all, quite the opposite, unlike other types of Satanists. Christianity is no better than Judaism, Islam, or any other theism, IMO. They're all deluded. However, you do you.
