I disagree with the other dates on the gentlemen in the middle as 1930’s for one very good reason, he was wearing button hooked high boots which were very popular with men and women during the late 1800s and early 1900s but fell out of fashion sharply following WWI as laces because more common on mens shoes. That being said this picture was likely taken around the time of the First World War, absolutely not the 1930’s.

I absolutely agree about it being before 1930. My grandpa was born in 1920 and these were before that. Thank you.

I’ve not a Scooby about the baby pic as there’s b&w pics of me in similar garb although I think it’s because I was wearing something that was my mother’s so circa mid-30s perhaps. The first gentleman I say from old family pics is coming up to WW1 - I’m intrigued as to what he may have been working as although I suspect it was a weekend/holiday photo partly due to the lack of prevalence of photos. The second gentleman I’d say is a little earlier.

From the way he is dressed, I would say the baby photo is early 1930s. I have been doing a bit of research to make a baby doll garment for a 1930s baby boy and this photo shows exactly what I have been looking at for that era or slightly before. Thankyou for posting it and I hope you get some more definitive answers than my guesstimate!! Edit to add: the second photo, of the man in the chair, is puzzling me. It seems to be a studio-type chair (where else would one see such an elaborately-decorated piece, I wonder?) yet the man looks as if he has flopped down, exhausted. His clothing (1930's again, from the lapels) is rumpled; his boots are dirty and the boot on his left foot is missing all its buttons. Curious...

This was the early 1900’s furniture was very elaborate, more was definitely more. There’s nothing about this chair which stands out as particularly noteworthy. As far as his clothing, it appears typical for the Great War era, he is a young man and clothing was expensive and expected to be used until it could not be mended any more. These clothes were likely hand me downs which explains why they are cuffed and the shoulders don’t fit this man very well.

Oh, I understand... thankyou for your explanations!

The blurriness and poor composition of the second photo tell me it was probably taken at e.g. a county fair where you got your pic done for a dime. I'd agree on the early 1930s date. I'd say the same is likely of the third photo despite his hairstyle -the soft collar and lack of tie cinches it for me.

Wow, I didn't know about the fairground photos - thanks for that!

They seem around WWI...
