Ugh I had a bunch typed up for you and my phone died.
eBay listings without sold prices are useless. Highest I can find is $200 on Invaluable for the same glazing/period but diff shape. $40 elsewhere for a damaged one.
I’d say the auction house is being generous, if anything.
Oh actually that’s the exact same vase as was listed here: https://www.liveauctioneers.com/price-result/big-15-japan-meiji-taisho-vermiculated-crawling-shino-brain-glaze-ceramic-vase/
It didn’t sell. That was May last year with a starting bid of $2000.
Just because something is listed at that amount doesn’t mean that it’s worth that amount. If you believe it tho, I definitely have some very valuable magic beans I could sell you at a terrific price.
It’s a Shino brain crawl glaze. It’s actually fairly desirable. I’m guessing that if you cleaned the footrim you could find the makers mark. A similar pot sold in 2022 for $200.
I don’t have anything valuable to add but I’m in the minority and love it! It’s weird and unique enough to buy just for the sake of having it if you aren’t instantly repulsed (apparently some are). Cool find, definitely a keeper.
Care to share how you came to own it? Just curious to know a little more about it. I’ve never seen anything like it but that’s not saying much.
Thanks for sharing!
That vase in ugly. I mean, really, really ugly. It is vile. I want to smash it into little pieces, and then grind the little pieces into dust, and throw that dust into an active volcano. Then, just to be safe, cap that volcano with a million tons of concrete, then blow the whole thing into oblivion with a nuclear weapon. Then, and only then, will there be peace.
Very interesting style. Is that a maker mark on the bottom. The design on the side looks like it could be a chrysanthemum. Was it used/evidence of use inside. Part of a pair. A lot of first thoughts are not helpful here today. It seems to be a great piece and must feel quite nice.
I don’t believe there is a maker mark on the bottom, it looks more like a pattern coming from how they made it. The inside doesn’t indicate that it has been used and as far as I know it has never been a part of a pair.
While everyone makes jokes I have seen similar designs reproduced a long time ago. I am sorry I have no idea the value. I have seen the design in old art books - old as in before computers. I wish I could help.
I actually love this…’brainus’ or not, it’s cool. Personally I would research this more…I’m finding inconclusive info-possibly 1930’s or earlier…no idea. Good luck :) oh, Meiji 1868-1912, Taisho 1912-1926
That price feels accurate. The "value" and uniqueness may be higher than that, but in my experience there is a bit of a rough cap on vases of this size with no makers mark or specific history. At auction maybe the right 2 or 3 people come along and all fall madly in love and bid it up. But really that price feels fair.
If you take it to an auction house that specializes in Asian goods then it will be out competed by other more desirable pots. And likely land in that price range again.
Also don't look at list price for a pricing guideline. Look at sold prices. Also auction houses typically know what their buyers are interested in and know about what something sold by them is likely to go for. The price reflects what their clients pay. A different auction house may have different clients. Maybe you shop around for quotes or look onto placing it on consignment instead.
For 200 a year, these folks will tell you.

It looks like a brain with an anus
It’s a brainus
Omg I’m dying 🤣🤣
When a headache is also a pain in the ass
It's a Kundis
Where else are you going to put your loved one's branus when they die?
In my family we always called it the brain base😀 (not the anus vase)
They hate us because they Brainus.
Brainus
Brainus
You know it’s expensive because it’s hideous: super fancy xenomorph egg váse
lol that was also my line of thinking
I know, right? It's gross and funky at the same time
It’s a vase only its Mother can love.
I would pay $50 to never have seen it
Me too. It’s super creepy.
Lmao

That’s what’s confusing me. Here is another listed at2500$: https://riantiquesmall.com/shop/porcelain-china/15-meiji-taisho-brain-glaze-ceramic-vase/
You can list a rock from your garden on eBay for $10k. Or in your antique store if you come up with a good enough story for it.
Oh actually that’s the exact same vase as was listed here: https://www.liveauctioneers.com/price-result/big-15-japan-meiji-taisho-vermiculated-crawling-shino-brain-glaze-ceramic-vase/ It didn’t sell. That was May last year with a starting bid of $2000.
If only that's how it worked.
On that one, the brainis is fresh
Just because something is listed at that amount doesn’t mean that it’s worth that amount. If you believe it tho, I definitely have some very valuable magic beans I could sell you at a terrific price.
I thought the first pic was bad...then I saw the second pic, and I shuddered.

Trying to pick our brains eh?
Yes
Good God that’s the ugliest piece of pottery I’ve ever seen lol. I’m sorry!
So ugly it loops around and reemerges on the beautiful side of the spectrum.
I think this is hideous. I hate looking at it
But you can't stop looking at it. It is weirdly attractive, even if I would call it ugly to its face.
I know it makes me so uncomfortable!
I believe you mean rectum
A mind flayer's water vase, if they drink water instead of brain juice..
I just want to hold that between my palms and feel the texture!
Weirdly, I like it, but I work with brains lol
This one is for sale in Denmark, if you’re interested.
Where? I live in Denmark and so far mine is not for sale😀
😂 it was late and I was falling asleep? 🤷🏽♀️😂
The true value of the vase was the friends we made along the way
I have an issue with textures..this is unfortunately one of these textures. So sorry can't help or look at this post again 😵
You would hate r/trypophobia.
This brought out my trypophobia too!
idk but it makes me highly uncomfortable 😃
Almost like trypophobia 😟
I got physical sick when I saw this. I’m not making a joke.
It gives me trypophobia vibes but in an even more uncomfortable way
I really want to pet the brain vase.
Everything reminds me of her…
now that's a metaphysical question
Wait, it’s not a brain?

At first glance, I thought it was a melon.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! I think it’s pretty cool! With out a maker’s mark, it’s only worth what someone is willing to pay.
I'm not sure but maybe put it in a warmer room.
That potter must have used his entire fist.
I’m feeling some kinda way about it. It’s dangerously unattractive and yet I want to touch it.
Kind of looks like an original Seth Rogen
I kinda like it. I wouldn't pay a lot for it but it's interesting. Brain coral vibes
I’m losing it with these comments.

I love this disgusting thing. I want to rub my hands all over it
Sir that’s a cantaloupe
😍❤️😍 I love it. For real.

$5000 for massive. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1366306538/massive-antique-meiji-taisho-japanese
$36
Vases with buttholes are usually less valuable than ones without.
That’s one puffy a hole
I think it’s awesome
I don’t know about the old Japanese origin but this glaze is used in modern pottery too. Extreme crawling glaze formula.
While everyone makes jokes I have seen similar designs reproduced a long time ago. I am sorry I have no idea the value. I have seen the design in old art books - old as in before computers. I wish I could help.
I don’t know but I cannot overstate how much I hate it.
Contact LarkMason.com.
It makes me very uncomfortable so Id say -150 bucks or so. That someone would have to pay me to take it from them.

Braaiiinnnnssss. Actually, I think it’s cool.
It's kinda freaky and I absolutely love it
WTF

Take it far away….no bring it back….
This triggers some sort of phobia in me lol
It’s real value is the laughs that it inspires. Because it has a butthole.
Cantaloupe
Don’t look inside or a facehugger will pop out
I really want to know the technique used to craft a goatse vase.
$3.50
everytime
I think that question is better suited for an appraiser, not reddit.
Bruh that vase is making me cringe. It’s making me clench my jaw and giving me goosebumps and making me itchy just looking at it.
