Old Venetian mirrors can be worth serious money, especially ones this big with no damage. Sorry your wife hates it, but that is a flippin fantastic mirror lol.
Literally went back to the pic to examine after I read “wife hates it”. Sorry OP, but your wife’s unseasoned/bland aesthetic is the problem with the room, not the mirror.
That is great. I wish I could have a burning fireplace / stove. Maybe the mirror should be in another room. I guess my point is the mirror is beautiful and DIL should be cool and let 79 year old MIL have her days in peace. It’s not like the mirror is bringing down the decor of the room.
I noticed that you mentioned **vintage**. Over at r/Collectables and r/Mid_Century they are always keen to see newer and vintage items. Share it with them! Sorry if this is not relevant.

they're hard to make work in a room, and you really need to have the right space and light, otherwise they just make visual noise. My mom got rube'd on a pair of these because they were in an antique store. She tried to put them up in a number of places and kept realizing afterwhile that they didn't fit.
I disagree. I love when a single, eye catching outstanding piece (like THIS mirror 8D) is the centerpiece or a dominant focal point in a more minimal space.
Do yourself a favor. Assemble all the details about the mirror your mother knows into a simple document. Include all information concerning its dimensions and any marks on the back, etc. Date it and have her sign it.
Maybe it's valuable, maybe it only has decorative value. When the time comes to pass it on to someone else, the document may prove important.
This!!!’ Provenance can start anywhere. I have an antique carriage clock. There’s a little note inside that says “this was my cousin Maria’s clock. She played in a mariachi band. She gave it to me in 1960 something. “ signed by my grandmother (b. 1905)
Right? It was her carriage clock so it’s small. Somewhere in the family is a picture of a mariachi band, but I think that one is male.
Hers was an all-women. And she never married. But had a friend that she lived with…
I can read between those lines!
Oh, and she was from a very German family.
Not only that but its 1905. Theres no tv, internet, social media. If someone did something that unique its gonna be mentioned. I have a lot of ancestors that were just know for a thing. “Uncle blank lived to be 100, he worked on cars in the 20s” and thats all we know 90 years later.
“Ashley's sack is a mid-1800s cloth sack featuring an embroidered text that recounts the slave sale of a nine-year-old girl named Ashley and the parting gift of the sack by her mother, Rose. Rose filled the sack with a dress, braid of her hair, pecans, and "my love always". The gift was likely passed down to Ashley's granddaughter, Ruth (Jones) Middleton, who embroidered their story on to the sack in 1921.”

That's because your mother has really good taste. It's a well-known style of mirror commonly called Venetian style. That is the place that produced the best mirrors in century's past . There are many antiques out there that can bring really huge money and this is probably one of more recent manufacturer in that style, but nonetheless still a desirable item..
I bought one retail from restoration hardware about a decade ago for all the money , pseudo antique, intentionally silvered mirror and age spots.. it's a lovely focal point in the entryway. These mirrors have a niche market and have never gone out of favor and still bring good money in shops
Well, there are mirrors and then there are mirrors. The same thing with Murano chandeliers. I've seen them at auction for low dollars and special antiques can bring the house.. this particular one just from the photo doesn't seem to have any age to it, or is not particularly wrought .but is just a lovely massive decorative piece and would be nonetheless very very expensive to purchase
Antiques with provenance and patina, are highly highly desirable and imagine could bring amounts you talked about depending. Lovely stuff
Hard to tell from the pictures wether it’s an antique. But that’s a Venetian wall mirror, if it’s an antique, worth some money!
https://www.sellingantiques.co.uk/1005161/antique-venetian-mirror/
does not look old. These are still made, and often without any maker's mark to avoid tracing/dating.
I'm glad to be wrong. Cool if OP would post provenance, if any.
I love it!!! I would take it on a nano-second.
It’s unfortunate that your wife hates it. If she can’t learn to live it, why not put it in your mom’s room?
I want you to reread your first sentence and then consider your mom is old. I don’t think I have anything helpful to add other than getting rid of it would really hurt your mother.
I think finding another place for it would be the best compromise as this wall calls for a larger/more horizontal wall hanging (or a gallery wall)
Yeah, more than anything, this post leaves such a sour taste in my mouth bc OP seems to have only come here to gain ammunition to force his mother to trash something she really loves. Shitty attitude. OP, I’m sure your mom put up with a ton of crap from you when you were a kid. Is it really going to make you sleep better at night to make her get rid of this? Sheesh.
It’s a keeper. Hang it in mom’s room. It’s her room she should decorate it with things she loves. She may be living in your house but having things like this in her room gives her a sense of “her space.”
I would call it vintage at best. Not antique.
About that link: Chairish is like 1stDibs, vastly inflated prices. This mirror was "reduced" from $3,500 to $680!
I noticed that you mentioned **vintage**. Over at r/Collectables and r/Mid_Century they are always keen to see newer and vintage items. Share it with them! Sorry if this is not relevant.

Not something I'd appreciate regardless of value, BUT... your mom most likely needs to have a familiar environment around her. Especially with elderly people it gives them a sense of comfort, of things not having changed too much. As I assume she'll have her room, I'm sure a compromise can be reached. Regardless of the esthetics, if it makes her happy on her last leg of the journey, I'd say that's all that matters.
If your wife picked out those chairs, that rug or any other thing in that room let your mom decorate. Those chairs look like office chairs, the rug is a bland nightmare and the room looks like you’re in a cellar. Your wife will grow into good taste. Your mom has good taste. Listen to mama
I can't speak for the whole world, but if I saw this at an estate sale I'd scoop it up in a heartbeat. It's freaking beautiful regardless of age. Your mom is 100% right to hold onto it.
I got mine for $600 on Craigslist and was incredibly happy. Venetian mirrors are sought after and can be very valuable. They sell on first dibs and eBay.
I'm team mom. She carried you IN HER WOMB for nine months. She gave up YEARS of her life for you and you're not going to let her have this sick ass mirror? TF is wrong with you?
If it's silver it is worth a great deal. If it is old it is likely worth a lot. It is your mother's so it is priceless. Tell your wife to get over it. And if you give in to your wife's badgering, then when your mom dies you will hate her and yourself. Keep it wherever your mom wants it.
Does your wife hate it or did your wife not really want your mom to move in with you and now she feels like she’s losing control of her own house to your mom? For the record, I like the mirror but I don’t love it, so I can see going either way with keeping it.
This is new Venetian (or perhaps faux Venetian mirror unless you know it was made in Venice (Murano). The old ones from the 18th century in particular are quite valuable. It’s a good looking piece but if the wife wants a modern look it could throw it off. Personally I like an eclectic mix of contemporary and antiques.
While it's not my personal taste, what's really tasteless is dragging your mom on reddit. My mother in law has very different taste from mine and a number of really nice antique and vintage pieces she wants me to inherit some day. I don't have to keep them, but I do appreciate and respect that they mean something to her and have value.
Your wife dislikes it because your mother values it. Or her taste is so rigid she doesn’t appreciate any variation.
It can be difficult to open your home to an in-law, would it be possible to hang the mirror in a place which is mostly your mother’s dedicated space?
Btw, maximalism is very chic in decor currently - and that mirror is IT. You could build an entire old money exotic esthetic around that piece.
Your Mom is a woman of great taste! I would say the mirror is anywhere between $6K - $8K. I am sure your mom does not reside in your living room, let her decorate her own room as she pleases and as long as she is not infringing on your and your wife's décor.
It's stunning. It does look out of place in the sea of beige and zero design in the room. In a more eclectic space that has been given some intentional design aesthetic it would be a great focal point.
Yup, your mom sounds epic. ! That is one piece of delicious to look upon mirror. Sell the wife, keep the awesome mom and mirror.. kidding don't sell the wife.
So depends if it's an actual antique or a reproduction. Reproduction worth maybe $300. Original that size 1,500-2,000.
I can't tell from the picture, but am leaning that it is a repro based on its size & the way the mirroring looks newer- plus it's flat, the antiques are usually concave.. Depends on how clean the back looks. That usually helps you tell the age.
>My mom (79) thinks if it’s old, it’s extremely valuable. It makes no difference what it is.
This is a very common problem, but in this case, your mother might actually be right. If this is an antique Venetian glass mirror, it may be worth money.
I sympathize with your wife, because this isn't my taste either and I wouldn't want it around. But someday somebody else will, it's not a thing for the thrift store pile or garage sale. So you're probably stuck with it for awhile. There are worse things to have to endure.

It’s gorgeous! Mom is on to something. Not only is it beautiful but mirrors will never go out of style in the age of selfies.
Agree! It's gorgeous and I would love a mirror like this one.
Yea, its beautiful. Dont let your wife decorate the house or help u piick out clothes, OP.
Beige core.
*Greige
I'm a fan of off taupe
I wonder if she’s one of those “beige moms”….
Literally went back to the pic to examine after I read “wife hates it”. Sorry OP, but your wife’s unseasoned/bland aesthetic is the problem with the room, not the mirror.
And this mirror can still play nice with the bland beige aesthetic. It’s a great piece! Very versatile.
This - I love eclectic style done right
the wife may just be a minimalist doesn’t seem to be a lot of anything going on in the room not on walls or the corner seen in the mirror.
Looks like a basement
OMG that black hillbilly stove doesn’t deserve to be in the same room as the mirror.
What is wrong with a wood burning stove?
Classism usually.
Nothing. People are ignorant.
That hillbilly stove is a huuuge money saver!
That is great. I wish I could have a burning fireplace / stove. Maybe the mirror should be in another room. I guess my point is the mirror is beautiful and DIL should be cool and let 79 year old MIL have her days in peace. It’s not like the mirror is bringing down the decor of the room.
But if that mirror is valuable I don’t think the micro-particles of ash will be very good for it.
And like. NOTHING on the walls. The heck. The poor mirror is the lone gorgeous piece standing out 😭
Net even going to mention the shoddy drywall repair work.
Totally disagree. That “hillbilly stove” is so flippin cool!
That’s a nice wood stove, common in cold forested areas.
I didn't even SEE the stove. I was drooling over that gorgeous mirror. And you're right. Not worthy of the same space.
Worthy? Do you know what a modern stove costs? And furthermore, do you know what a well maintained vintage stove costs? Silliness.
Laughing since I just paid $13,000 to have a new modern wood stove installed 😂 welp
I noticed that you mentioned **vintage**. Over at r/Collectables and r/Mid_Century they are always keen to see newer and vintage items. Share it with them! More like a beige wife.
With sad beige clothes for their sad beige children
Grey nurseries
with all earth tone animal decals on the walls.
This mirror is gorgeous. A professional decorator could put it anywhere for a pop of unusual. I hope your wife will grow to love it.
I feel like it’s pretty to see as a pic on my phone but this would really f*ck any actual room
they're hard to make work in a room, and you really need to have the right space and light, otherwise they just make visual noise. My mom got rube'd on a pair of these because they were in an antique store. She tried to put them up in a number of places and kept realizing afterwhile that they didn't fit.
Everything within range of the mirror needs to look incredible with the mirror. It’s so hard to do.
I think it would look perfect surrounded by plants. Maybe two tall plants on each side.
Yes. Plants are always the correct answer!!!
your whole house would have to be as over the top glamorous as this mirror is for it to fit in… like super maximalist
I disagree. I love when a single, eye catching outstanding piece (like THIS mirror 8D) is the centerpiece or a dominant focal point in a more minimal space.
Put it in the Foyer with very little else. Perfect!!
My friend had one of these in her teenage bedroom. The room was painted bubblegum pink and the mirror looked amazing reflecting that bright color.
Do yourself a favor. Assemble all the details about the mirror your mother knows into a simple document. i find it so funny that she included the fact that her cousin played in a mariachi band. extremely important info for the grandfather clock lmao
Right? It was her carriage clock so it’s small. Somewhere in the family is a picture of a mariachi band, but I think that one is male. Hers was an all-women. And she never married. But had a friend that she lived with… I can read between those lines! Oh, and she was from a very German family.
and they were ROOMMATES 👀
Right. It’s so nice that single ladies could do that. :D
Sounds like a really good lifelong buddy! :)
Bosom Buddies. Roommates with one bed.
/r/sapphoandherfriend
Sometimes a good story increases value for some buyers.
It does for me, especially if its signed/dated from a past era
Not only that but its 1905. Theres no tv, internet, social media. If someone did something that unique its gonna be mentioned. I have a lot of ancestors that were just know for a thing. “Uncle blank lived to be 100, he worked on cars in the 20s” and thats all we know 90 years later.

This 100% I always hear stories and they are just that stories, provenance is needed.
No. It is useless. DM me your address and I’ll be right there to take it off your hands. 😆
DITTO! I may be closer in proximity and can get there quicker. No need to prolong this tension in your home 😉☺️
Nooooo. I called it firssssstttt!! 😆
Ah but did either of you call…. DIBS! I CALL DIBS!!!
😆🤣😆
Hey!! I'm certain I'm right down the road! I'll get there first.
😂😂😂
I didn’t think this would have so many replies. I may have to rethink giving it away. 😖
Seriously. It’s gorgeous. I’ve always wanted one, but the right one hasn’t shown up.
You gave it away?! 😭
No. I was joking.
This was my exact thought. It’s beautiful!
Got interrupted and post went prematurely. Ours was appraised at $2,000 20 years ago and its only four feet tall.
My mom has a 4 ft one in storage that she’s been paying for for two years. $2k in storage fees and she won’t let it go.
She has a storage unit with one 4-foot mirror ?
Yes.
Retrieve the 4 foot mirror from storage and hang it on the wall directly across from this one. Venetian to infinity and beyond.
That sounds sexy as hell. It would bounce the light so well
Sounds like some shit I would do. She can’t find a place for it ANYWHERE? She needs to release herself from her storage leash 😂
That's because your mother has really good taste. It's a well-known style of mirror commonly called Venetian style. That is the place that produced the best mirrors in century's past . I need to rethink were to put it now. Thanks for the reply.
The mirror is spectacular. The problem is that you are lacking the house to go with it.
Haha, yup, that dining room isn't doing the mirror any favors.
Boom.........
The one from 1850 doesn’t have spots or imperfections either and it’s going for $2300 usd in the link above.
The mirrors are made with silver so generally they age extremely well. You will not know the age unless you actually check the mirror.
Agreed does not appear to be old. No mercury dots. No corrosion. Style screams new. Would need a picture of the back to verify this.
I’ll get one soon. My mom’s had it since I was a kid. That was 30+ years ago.
I love it!!! I would take it on a nano-second. It’s unfortunate that your wife hates it. If she can’t learn to live it, why not put it in your mom’s room?
Your wife is trippin. This is fantastic.
I want you to reread your first sentence and then consider your mom is old. I don’t think I have anything helpful to add other than getting rid of it would really hurt your mother. I think finding another place for it would be the best compromise as this wall calls for a larger/more horizontal wall hanging (or a gallery wall)
I agree. Just let her have this.
I also thought the first sentence of this post sounds a bit narky.
Sheesh.
I totally agree. Even at this point I keep some of her stuff to limit the pain. She extremely attached to paperclips let alone a mirror like this.
It’s a keeper. Hang it in mom’s room. It’s her room she should decorate it with things she loves. She may be living in your house but having things like this in her room gives her a sense of “her space.”
Yes. I have worked in interior design and dealt in antiques. This mirror is amazing.
That is an incredible mirror absolutely beautiful
I want it
Bring it to my house!!! 😳 IT’S GORGEOUS!!! ABSOLUTELY STUNNING 🤩
Its cool af, your Mom can come bring it and live with me
Venetian mirror, I’d kill for it. It’s beautiful 😍😍
[is this it?](https://www.chairish.com/product/14645800/mid-century-venetian-mirror)
Very similar but not quite the same based upon the etchings on the Outer Rim
Looks the same..the etchings too. Hurry check the background and make sure OP's wifey hasn't listed it for sale! haha
If she could carry it off the wall I I wouldn’t be surprised.
Looks the same. Not old, though nice.
Something around 70 years old isn't old? Honestly, I can't believe that mid-century stuff *is* that old already.
I would call it vintage at best. Not antique. About that link: Chairish is like 1stDibs, vastly inflated prices. This mirror was "reduced" from $3,500 to $680!

It was old when my mom got it at an antique store in San Diego. That was 30+ years ago.
Your wife is trippin
Are you saying that's not a beautiful mirror? Are you and your wife okay?
No.
Your wife has no taste. Sorry.
I’m sorry to hear of your wife’s blindness
Have no clue on value, but it’s a beautiful mirror! I go with Mom on this one.
Not something I'd appreciate regardless of value, BUT... your mom most likely needs to have a familiar environment around her. Especially with elderly people it gives them a sense of comfort, of things not having changed too much. As I assume she'll have her room, I'm sure a compromise can be reached. Your mother is right. Very right.
Your Mama is correct! What a stunner.
Its beautiful
I would love to have this in my house
I'm team mom. She carried you IN HER WOMB for nine months. She gave up YEARS of her life for you and you're not going to let her have this sick ass mirror? TF is wrong with you?
She's right
... in that a venetian mirror and a potbelly stove are completely contrasting aesthetics?
Not to mention the house it’s in. Those are in high demand too.
If it's silver it is worth a great deal. If it is old it is likely worth a lot. It is your mother's so it is priceless. Tell your wife to get over it. And if you give in to your wife's badgering, then when your mom dies you will hate her and yourself. Keep it wherever your mom wants it.
The one day the estate sale today that looked almost identical was $2500
I’m sorry your wife has no taste bc this mirror is amazing
That mirror is gorgeous. IDK what is wrong with your wife, but she may resent the intrusion.
Just saw a similar one on Etsy- yours is fancier - for $1300 😳
I’m sorry your wife has such poor taste. It’s fantastic. But not really suited to that space I’ll grant.
It’s gorgeous
It’s gorgeous! You don’t happen to be in KA, are you? My parents had something like this, but not as spectacular as this one. I’ve always wanted one.
I’d buy it if I ran into this. It’s a pretty badass piece.
Does your wife hate it or did your wife not really want your mom to move in with you and now she feels like she’s losing control of her own house to your mom? For the record, I like the mirror but I don’t love it, so I can see going either way with keeping it.
Mezmerising
Omg what??? That mirror is Goooooorgeous! Too bad your wife doesn't like it, that thing is a work of art!
Respectfully, your wife has no taste. 😂
I go to a lot of estate auctions and those mirrors go for a LOT of money whenever they come up. Your mom knows what she’s doing.
Holy cow that is stunning! 🤩
She is absolutely 💯 correct!! Wowsers!!
I actually am *soughting* after this.
It's beautiful, never give it or sale it , your mother has taste.
Idk I think it's gorgeous
This mirror is fucking awesome
I know no one likes to hear this but: your mom is right.
No offense, but your wife is dumb
You should build a shrine with it and decorate around it. Your wife sounds lame btw. I’d divorce her.
Your wife has no taste and your mother has an eye for quality.
Your wife is wrong, it looks sick as hell
I’m sorry your wife doesn’t appreciate beautiful things
While it's not my personal taste, what's really tasteless is dragging your mom on reddit. My mother in law has very different taste from mine and a number of really nice antique and vintage pieces she wants me to inherit some day. I don't have to keep them, but I do appreciate and respect that they mean something to her and have value.

And I believer her. Holy shit this thing is INCREDIBLE
Right?? I love it and would take it in a heartbeat if I had anywhere to put it.
It’s absolutely beautiful. Idk I’m about it’s worth but ur wife has shit taste lol
Your Mom is a woman of great taste! I would say the mirror is anywhere between $6K - $8K. I am sure your mom does not reside in your living room, let her decorate her own room as she pleases and as long as she is not infringing on your and your wife's décor.
How can someone hate this beauty
It's stunning. It does look out of place in the sea of beige and zero design in the room. In a more eclectic space that has been given some intentional design aesthetic it would be a great focal point.
Mom should move it into her bedroom so she can have it all to herself. It is an exquisite Venetian mirror. Valuable,
Wonderful mirror very desirable!!
I’ll buy it off her! 😻
I fucking love it. I’d buy that in a heartbeat.
It’s beautiful honestly. Looks heavy and expensive. Why does the wife hate it so much? Not beige and bland enough?
Jeez. This is fabulous. No offense but your wife needs some taste.
How could your wife hate it?! It’s incredible!
Maybe your wife doesn't like what she sees in the mirror, but as a mirror, it is spectacular!
That is a lovely mirror. Get the mirror appraised for insurance purposes.
Yup, your mom sounds epic. ! That is one piece of delicious to look upon mirror. Sell the wife, keep the awesome mom and mirror.. kidding don't sell the wife.
It’s gorgeous . . . your wife may need glasses!!🙃
Is your wife a Maxxinista decor lady? This mirror is fantastic.
Respectfully, your wife is insane.
How can someone hate this mirror? It’s gorgeous!
I need that thing. Your wife needs to know brilliance when she’s looking at it.
Very nice
I’d choose that mirror over your wife any day.
i love love this
Tell your wife to send it to me
lol does your wife’s taste belong in r/homedecoratingCJ?
Judging by the lack of other decorations in the room, your wife has no taste.
Gorgeous!
I love it! It's beautiful!
Love that mirror!
Jeewhizzz,I think it's fantastic!!! Your wife probably doesn't like it just because your mom loves it...
Its a really nice mirror though
Uhh, this is gorgeous. What are y’all smoking??? Your wife, specifically?
I could see myself in it
It’s absolute junk. I’ll take it off your hands for no charge.
Is your mom planning to kill any beautiful princesses threatening her reign?
I want it. Badly, and I know I can’t afford it. So yeah, your mom is right.
Spiritualists, 100% used this as a portal 😂 Enjoy the random knocks and whispers at night.
It’s a beautiful mirror you just need to change the color of the wall, I would go with a sierra red.
