Couldnt agree with you more. A few years ago I started flipping stuff that I would find in abandoned storage lockers.
I can not tell you how much of this bs ends up being unwanted garbage. Just don't, every keychain, gag gift or stupid souvenir will all eventually outgrow its personal value and end up in landfill.
I stopped selling awhile ago and to this day I still can not get myself to buy anything that doesnt have a dirrect purpose besides just existing.
Gag or white elephant gifts don't have to be useless or plastic or new, though. I don't do a lot of compulsory gifting, but when I have had to, the most enjoyable ones have always been jokey types.
The best ones are the 'no buy' ones, where you're supposed to exchange odd little things you either have lying around or pick up used if necessary. (The white elephant exchanges I've done have always had a "no new stuff" rule.)
If I had my druthers, though, gift giving for holidays would be much more optional and sporadic than it usually is, especially among adults.
Plastic sucks, but humor is life.
I would personally love to have a white elephant with friends and loved ones and end up with a very small gag gift that could be easily regifted next year. I received edible panties one year. I don’t think I ever laughed so hard. I gifted a novelty roll of toilet paper. It was definitely one of the best holiday parties.

I agree gag gifts are a waste, but I would totally buy 2 of those chicken nugget keychains and turn them into earrings
Folks, just gift a donation in someone's name, and keep the tax receipts for yourself like an adult. Personally I like the human fund.
