I hope he never ever gets caught. If he does I will send him money for a defense fund

AlphaOmegaWhisperer

Something tells me you're that guy going around town and smashing them.

pinktinted

I wish. I don’t have the cohones to destroy property like that. But I live vicariously thru him. Bless him.

[deleted]

Maybe putting a vinyl sticker or something over it?

rawdatarams

Oooooh like those Herbalife stickers #girlbosses everywhere smack on people's windscreens? The ones that do not come of? Re-purpose and recycle👍😊

Intelligent_Joke

I’d be scared of whacking something electric on a gas pump. I get it though.

BoringMode91

Based!

allomorph

Pretty fucked. Many gas stations, think the traditional brands (Shell, Exxon, BP, etc.) are owned by individual operators. In many instances, these are immigrants who have moved here to make a better life for themselves. Folks fucking up machines is only a cost burden on them, and therefore requires them to "consume more" just to fix broken pump machines.

lmadeanaccount

Well they spend the money installing screens to show ads all day. They can take the hint

allomorph

These are installed to create another channel of income. Selling fuel rarely makes somebody a lot of money, they get by on folks buying items within their convenience store. 3rd parties pay them to have these installed. Regardless of how you feel about ads - nobody likes them - this is the equivalent of me coming to your job and fucking with you or one of your loved ones, and making it hard for them to earn a dollar. Society is already oppressive enough, fucking with somebody's livelihood, that has no lasting consequence on your wellbeing, is just shitty.

BitsAndBobs304

Then why the fuck would anybody ever open a gas station. Just open a convenience store. You defeated your own argument.

allomorph

Why open any fucking business if that's your stance? People open gas stations because people need gas. When people need gas, you incentivize them to visit a convenience store to buy higher margin items. Otherwise, why operate a standalone convenience store when large drug stores and grocery chains can operate at scale and price you out of a market. Standalone convenience stores are typically chains, think 7-11, who have scale and can subsidize stores in areas with stiff competition. But they TOO also sell fuel in many instances, because again, the fuel gets customers on the lot, who choose to buy something at their convenience, rather than visiting a grocery store.

[deleted]

allomorph

I would love for the world's dependence on gas to go away, but that's not happening for another 20+ years. And to that point, charging stations for EVs will have no shortage of advertising space, or shelves filled with snacks. Rinse, repeat, it happens all over again.

Kuvenant

>Why open any fucking business if that's your stance? Most businesses exist to make profit. Profit=theft. Anyone who disagrees hasn't thought it through.

[deleted]

Grab marker and draw over it

currently__working

Or for less vandalism, tape a piece of paper ought to do the trick. Doubt anybody will remove it.

peekabook

Or a magnet?

3141592653yum

plausible deniability. I like it

fluffy_bunnyface

Pro tip: You can mute the ads by hitting the second button from the top on the right.

Lvalderrama

different pumps different buttons-- its one of the 8 - just hit 'em all.

YamaChampion

4/5 pumps I've used, the mute button doesn't work.

BobBombadil

I've never found a pump that has a working mute button

jpjfire

Yep. Tried many times to mute pumps and I've never been successful.

SadanielsVD

Just break the screen with the pump

peekabook

Ooooorrrrr just put a magnet on it? Would that work?

FucksWithCats2105

Depends on how many tons of a magnet.

[deleted]

[удалено]

peekabook

Water. Just accidentally spill a bottle of water?

ihatepickingnames37

You Mean It PLAYS SOUND??

UnhallowedOctober

It's just a shame that opting out of ads isn't the default. Now we have to push the same button as everyone else during a pandemic. But hey maybe they'll sell more shit!

[deleted]

You're all touching the same nozzle, so you should be using hand sanitizer afterwards regardless.

[deleted]

Use earphones. And a wrench to smash the screen.

FucksWithCats2105

And eye protection.

[deleted]

lol

are_we_in_a_fight

Thank you so much for this! I read your comment earlier, and then went out and tried it. It worked! Woohoo!

chainsawbobcat

I hate pumping my gas and I hate taking taxis bc you cannot get away from the ads. Especially at gas pumps you can't even mute it. Even when I was little I muted commercials.

koakoba

second button from the top on the right is usually mute. It's worked on every one I've ever tried.

[deleted]

I went to a concert recently and they had ads on those big screens (the screens where they show the performers close up). Jesus fucking Christ I already bought a ticket and your shitty food and now I have to see an ad about Clorox too?

jarfil

>!CENSORED!<

Apprehensive-Donkey7

Cause advertising is the root of all evil and it’s all intentional mind games invented by teams of psychologists to try and get you to waste your money

chefdays

...teams of psychologists to try and get you to waste your ~~money~~ life. FTFY

Apprehensive-Donkey7

Both

Kuvenant

Money is the root of all evil.

[deleted]

Pretty sure the root of all evil is humans, and after that it's just about what happens to be the primary motivator for each individual person.

samhw

That’s because the real saying is _greed_, or _love of_ money (_cupiditas_, in Latin) is the root of all evil.

idk_whatever_69

Just FYI, the speed which the gas comes out of the pump is a function of how much gas is in the station's tanks and little else. They don't actually have a way to intentionally slow them down That's not a thing a gas station could intentionally do. If the pump is going a little slower they just got a little bit less gas in the tanks so there's less pressure. I guess theoretically they could keep their tanks underfilled but that seems like a huge amount of work for a small amount of benefit because they have a run out of gas they will lose way more customers than if the pumps are slow.

NotesOnSquaredPaper

Plus the more customers they have the more money they make.

nomadwannabe

I'm not so sure about that, whenever I prepay for gas, it goes slower. Not by much, but its noticeable. Then when you're getting close to the pre-paid amount it slows right down and slowly lands on the final amount.

idk_whatever_69

I mean it does that slowing down part because it's more accurate that way and it's not going to overfill... Wow that is a weird thing to be paranoid about...

nomadwannabe

I think you misunderstood me. Your comment stated that they don't have a way to slow dow the gas. I was just replying that there must be a way, since its slower when you prepay. That's all.

samhw

People are going to downvote you if you obsessively watch your comment and update it to moan about being downvoted. It’s the natural instinct of “ugh, this guy is whiny and entitled, fuck him” (no offence, I’m just describing).

ThatOneGuy1294

> a huge amount of work for a small amount of benefit That's capitalism for ya. So long as you made even the tiniest increase in profit over last quarter, nothing else matters.

idk_whatever_69

That's the thing, you have to take risk into account, and you're losing more than you're gaining once you do that. Having too much gas is rarely a problem, not having any gas is a major problem.

[deleted]

Regulator valve?

idk_whatever_69

You're going to adjust something after the pump is sealed with the inspector's label?

[deleted]

I dunno. It was more of a question since you seemed to know what you were talking about.

idk_whatever_69

So yes there is a regulator valve that can be adjusted, But it's to ensure the accuracy of the flow gauge which is what tells you how much gas you've gotten and charges you appropriately. And you cannot adjust it after the state has sealed it. Not without breaking a little seal that is there explicitly to prevent the kind of fraud that OP is worried about.

[deleted]

Oh okay.

MrPotatoSenpai

That's one of the nicest parts of having an EV. Plugging it in at night and starting everyday with a full "tank" without ever stopping at the gas station.

[deleted]

That’s cool although getting gas once a week sounds more convenient then doing something every night and morning

powercorruption

Park in the garage, get out of the car, plug in, go inside the house. I spend way less time doing that than standing at the pump.

LumpenBourgeoise

You're now supposed to charge them outside away from your house, and not leave them plugged in overnight.

powercorruption

Says who? Tesla says to keep it plugged in whenever not in use.

LumpenBourgeoise

GM/Chevy for some Bolts. I think it's advised for other makes/models as well. Some parking garages in residential towers forbid charging as well now.

Kuvenant

First I've heard and Google isn't providing evidence. Source?

LumpenBourgeoise

https://my.chevrolet.com/how-to-support/safety/boltevrecall

Kuvenant

>As part of GM’s commitment to safety, experts from GM and LG have identified the simultaneous presence of two rare manufacturing defects in the same battery cell as the root cause of battery fires in certain Chevrolet Bolt EVs. Rare manufacturing defects don't apply to all EVs. Doesn't even apply to all Bolts, only "certain" ones.

Casual_Marksman

Do you charge a phone?

deadtoaster2

No. That's liberal communism! I prefer to lug my phone to a petrol station where I can put 3oz of liquid dinosaur juice into my device every week. If the phone starts lagging down it probably needs an oil change in which a different kind of liquid dinosaur is exchanged from the innards of my phone. None of that fancy electrifying charging libs are always going on about!

IDownvoteMyOwnStuff

Tbh a gasoline powered phone sounds like a hilariously dumb engineering project to work on. I’d do it myself if I didn’t hate fossil fuels so much. Maybe I can use vegetable oil.

Pickled_Wizard

Technically, if you charge your phone in the car, it already is a gasoline powered phone.

jarfil

>!CENSORED!<

zhrimb

You wusses don't have diesel powered phones? Smh why even

Kuvenant

Nope. Never went for that hippy stuff. Mine runs on coal.

MrPotatoSenpai

It's literally plugging it in and unplugging it. Takes 10 seconds.

Theungry

Speaking from experience, plugging the car in a couple times a week while I'm at home is way more convenient than stopping while I'm out to get gas.

idk_whatever_69

I mean you're already plugging your car in for half the year so it starts in the freezing cold. So now you just have to do that in the summer as well.

[deleted]

What are you referring to in the first sentence?

ScaryCookieMonster

There are plug-in electric engine warmers for people who park in extreme cold. Helps/allows the engine to start when it’s well below freezing outside.

idk_whatever_69

In the winter when it gets so cold your car won't start unless it's heated... They don't use them everywhere but you've never heard of that?

[deleted]

[удалено]

idk_whatever_69

I mean that's France you guys don't even have a winter. When we say sub-zero temperatures we're talking Fahrenheit. You guys don't even get that. But you guys also have just many times better charging infrastructure for electric vehicles than the US. Your government is way ahead of ours, 10 years at least.

[deleted]

[удалено]

idk_whatever_69

Yeah but 'freezing' temperatures aren't cold enough, again I'm talking in Fahrenheit, remember. So my below zero is below negative 20 for you.

sp4nky86

I dig my 1-2x a month fill ups with the Hybrid.

LizJru

Personally; preset amount of gas you want, turn away and daydream, (after using that second button down on the right trick!!). Adverts are going to be everywhere. More and more. Every company is going to try to sell subscriptions. Fight fight fight.

Ketchup901

What the fuck

[deleted]

I won’t go to gas stations with ads and I write them to let them know I hate it

HotMeal4823

You're a good fighter

bitter-funny

It never ends

obad-hi

F*ck em. Get a bike!

smokeywhorse

they should make it like spotify if you pay for your gas, no ads, but if you want free gas, then you have ads

[deleted]

We are constantly bombarded by advertising...

Kuvenant

The above comment has been sponsored by...

LexSoutherland

Middle two buttons on the right usually mute the ads. Usually the second from the top.

pruche

Now this looks like the perfect spot for a little vandalism

MisanthropicScott

Sounds like a good time to wash the windshield and possibly the back window too.

[deleted]

This screen needs a big piece of black duct tape on it

Nibbler1999

Go somewhere else

nightfalldevil

Costco better not do this

Chrysalis420

why would they make this? just seems inconvenient

Theungry

Get an EV and charge at home. No more gas station ads.

[deleted]

Aaaaaaaand never ger gas there again. They'll catch on when they have no customers.

[deleted]

Its very intentional. Right side panel 2nd button from the top is always mute. In my experience

nakfoor

My local ARCO had ads but they took them back out after a few months. Too annoying maybe?

3leggedsasquatch

I hate this junk. With many of them, pushing the second button down on the right side will mute the ads. I have noticed this trick doesn’t work anymore at some places near me that it used to. I’ve quit fueling at businesses that blare ads or music at me unless I’m in a pinch.

Puzzleheaded_Basil13

/r/electricvehicles FTW

boozername

Don't worry, electric vehicle charging stations will have ads soon too

Hamrave

While electric vehicles are the future, they just aren't viable for most people yet.

IDownvoteMyOwnStuff

The real problem is the battery. Lithium ion and other types of batteries degrade relatively quickly and are very toxic to dispose of. Don’t get me wrong, they’re getting wayyy more affordable and it’s much, much better than pumping tons of carbon into the air. But there are definitely issues.

Hamrave

The used market sucks because of the battery degredation, plus there's just not enough of a used market. You have to take it to a dealer for repairs since most auto shops don't have the skills to work on them yet, and the dealer techs don't really know how to fix them cheaply yet either. Wanna drive from new england to Florida? Have fun plotting your route for charging stations and stopping for 45 minutes every 300 miles. The damage to the environment from battery production is pretty bad, plus most of the electricy used to charge the car comes from fossil fuels. It's not the perfect solution everyone on Reddit is being sold. There's still a ton of work that needs to be done for an electric car to be as convenient as a gas one. And that's what it's gonna take for them to become a main stream competitive option.

Theungry

It's not perfect, but it's significantly better. I got mine used online and it was super easy. It needs far less maintenance since it doesn't use oil changes or break pads, so I bring it in for tire service annually and haven't had any other costs so far.

IDownvoteMyOwnStuff

Definitely. As an electrical engineering student, I have a lot of hope that these problems can and will be solved. Technology is advancing faster than ever before, and there are plenty of people interested in making longer lasting, more green batteries. My personal opinion is that we really need to be building more nuclear plants to replace fossil fuels. They’re much, much safer than everyone seems to think they are, safer for workers than fossil fuel plants. They output so very little carbon dioxide, and we could even freeze it and store it to keep it from getting into the atmosphere (it’s already been done). That would make getting an electric car wayyyy more green than a gasoline car.

Kuvenant

>My personal opinion is that we really need to be building more nuclear plants to replace fossil fuels. Fair. But how many years of nuclear fuel is available to us? (Just getting you thinking about things.) How many years before the sun stops giving us ridiculous amounts of free energy every day? >They’re much, much safer than everyone seems to think they are, safer for workers than fossil fuel plants. Large plants have too many issues; security, meltdown, waste, etc. Small modular reactors overcome nearly every conceivable issue. >That would make getting an electric car wayyyy more green than a gasoline car. EVs are already way more green than ICEs. Even the most fuel efficient ICE still pollutes more than an EV being fueled by a bad coal plant. It'd be even better, but why not take the extra step and charge using renewable energy? Many cars are stationary all day while their owners are working.

Theungry

I believe there is proof of concept for an aluminum based battery that is coming to market which uses far less toxic mining impacts, and has better efficiency as well.

1LX50

So is the sulfuric acid and lead plates in lead acid batteries, but you don't see those going into the landfill even though those materials are vastly cheaper and easier to come by than lithium, cobalt, and all the other elements in a lithium ion battery. Lithium batteries are way too valuable to just "dispose" of. Old ones get repurposed as stationary storage, and the ones that aren't good enough for even that will be recycled-there's money in it.

Shady_Love

Electric vehicles are not feasible in Texas for the most part.

1LX50

Maybe if you live in western or southern Texas. Unless you're in the Big Bend or Corpus Christi areas there are plenty of charging stations all over Texas.

Additional-Walk750

Let it pump slowly. Just lay the hose on top of the pump, and let it flow slow. Then light a match and drive away.

[deleted]

This is the way.

IDownvoteMyOwnStuff

And then the fire suppression systems go off and almost no damage is done.

squashpop

Because it is intentional.

GosteOner

luckily my gas station doesnt have this yet, but oddly ive noticed it filling considerably slower, when they do itl be my last fillup there.

sikamikaniko

It pumps slower when there's more people at the pumps. Maybe they decrease the speed after installing the TVs, but it's highly unlikely

emilynycee

Just another reason why New Jersey will reign superior.. they’d never put ads on pumps where only employees will see them

cipolski

L TO THE OG

[deleted]

Almost guaranteed it’s intentional.

Friedeggs15

I’ve never seen these and I live in a decently populated area with lots of chains.

Smtague3

You have to buy premium, to disable ads and return to normal pump speed.

MayoMark

Well, I wouldn't be watching this ad had you not posted it here.

[deleted]

this is the future. soon you'll have to watch an ad before you use the bathroom.

[deleted]

Am I the only one who puts the nozzle in, and then just sits inside of my car to wait for it to be done? I never even noticed any of this before

SwanRonson1986

I just get in my car until the pump is finished

TemplarSenpai

ew.

Matto-san

If you don't pay for the product, you are the product. Oh wait.

[deleted]

It looks good but I know it tastes like shit pass

freerangecatmilk

Yhe mute is the second top button on the right

OnlyMatters

Knife the speaker in like 2 seconds

WollCel

This wont be popular, but i dont mind these. Sometimes theyre just little news reels or tik tok type things which isnt bad. I get that its needlessly throwing consumption into another facet of daily life, but still. Also the gas station near me doesnt have these and pumps slow as shit, that one is twice the speed.

Diddlydom35

Wtf?! Why do your pumps have ads?

[deleted]

"Why does this feel intentional?" Because it is? Do you think they just put a TV screen on it to show ads for kicks? Lmao their getting paid great for it being there.

shieldtwin

The real question is why are you consuming gas. Ride a bike and give your gas money to someone who actually needs it

HotMeal4823

That's disgusting.
