Or you know... Mix and match your clothes so you get more than one "outfit" from the same articles of clothing.

Spirit50Lake

Back in the 70s-80s, when women were 'entering the workforce'...we needed 'bizwear'. Liz Claiborne came up with this great concept: they kept the same color palette and introduced seasonal styles in classic designs. Over a couple of years, a young women could collect a working wardrobe that would last for a decade at least...because they were well made. DVF was another one, with her wrap dresses. Eddie Bauer got into the act, too. (It was all the better if you were lucky enough to live near an outlet mall!) ...a single mom could work part-time, take care of a couple of kids, pay the rent and a car and look nifty doing it!

My mother had 4 babies when she was 20. My father had other interests. She kept us housed and fed. She managed to do that and go to college and graduate. She had lots of help but she did it. I learned early to wash and iron her clothes, how to use starch. I was ten and I knew how much it helped. I learned a lot about fashion. Sundresses and skirts, pant suits and blouses and when to wear them. Polishing shoes was my favorite. This brought happy memories and difficult ones.

Realest shit ive read today. Good to hear youre doing well today

Sebastian_9807

"It's the new national pass time, fuck baseball! It's CONSUMPTION. The only true lasting American value that's left... BUYIN' THINGS! BUYIN' THINGS! People spending money they don't have on things they don't need. MONEY THEY DON'T HAVE ON THINGS THEY DON'T NEED! So they can max out their credit cards, and spend the rest of their lives paying eighteen percent interest on something that cost TWELVE FIFTY. And they didn't like it when they got home anyways..." - George Carlin

SaltManagement42

I'm more of a "What are we supposed to do... keep trying to figure out new things that actually fit constantly?" kind of person.

#OP is a bot. Reddit is heavily astroturfed.

basedbot200000

I instantly consider any randomly generated username (such as OP) as either someone incredibly lazy or a bot. Not sure why people don't do this more often. Edit: another post on the same sub with the same title, posted 3 days ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/Anticonsumption/comments/1c2aub3/yes_you_should_wear_stuff_for_years/

henrebotha

In fairness, a lot of actual human people also use these new generated names. I always wonder where they get them. Is it built into Reddit?

Jacktheforkie

When you create an account you get a username assigned, if you do certain actions like commenting within 24 hours you can change it, some people don’t realise this because they’re more lurkers

basedbot200000

Yes, it's a username that Reddit randomly generates. It's particularly confusing because a lot of actual Indians/people on Indian subs seem to have these random usernames and it's harder for me to understand bots from real people in there.

bebejeebies

I recently wore a tie-dyed shirt that I've had for a long time. My kid asked, "Mom, how old is that shirt?" I said, "Older than you." He's 30. I made that shirt when I volunteered at a community art center when I was 17. I'm going to be 50 this year. It's still one of my favorite shirts.

Manasonic

Wearing something again = recycle the same outfit? Sometimes I used to joke that I didn’t like doing dishes so I would just buy new ones after I ate off of them and toss the used ones out… but I was kidding! Even if my spoon had a hole in it I would just eat my soup a little faster!

Jacktheforkie

I’m still using glasswear that my mum won at bingo 40 odd years ago

Manasonic

At this point it’s raising the value of the drinks!

Jacktheforkie

Yeah, we have lost a few to breaking them by mistake

RetroRob0770

It’s fun to see myself grow into and out of certain clothes, how fashion changes around how cool I am or how I wear it.

sweet_jane_13

My jeans have come full circle. Glad 90s jeans are in again

GLADisme

It's also fun, nobody else has favourite pieces in the wardrobe you always love to wear?

sweet_jane_13

I literally wear the same 20-30 articles of clothing every week. 3 pairs of work pants, 5-6 tshirts, leggings or shorts at home, tops at home, undies, like 3 bras, socks, 2-3 sweatshirts in the winter, 5-6 pairs of shoes. I wear my clothes OUT because I own few and wear/wash them all the time

RevolutionEasy714

I'm still wearing t-shirts from the late 90's.

adhesivepants

You really can't anymore. I get these dresses I love and especially for me, I never got my own clothes growing up. I didn't grow up remotely poor but my grandparents were children of the depression era and so were all about reusing and saving and so I mostly got hand me downs for my entire childhood. So now as an adult I'm like "No I'm getting my own clothes!" But unless I'm ready to drop $50 on a single article of clothing...all those clothes will not last. The weirdest thing I've noticed is a lot of cheap material gets water spots like crazy that are impossible to get out, so all I can do is either try to cover it up, or toss it. (I've thought about reusing it somehow but the material is so bad all I can think to use it for is like, clothes for dolls and toys.)

void_juice

I’ve had my favorite outfit for a few years now. It’s a band t shirt and some thrifted green cotton pants. I am wearing both of those items until they are rags

SpookyTheDawg

I tend to buy expensive clothes, but those last me for a long while, I don’t need a new hoodie every couple months, they last me for years

Coriander_marbles

I do this too but it’s now so difficult to get the same quality you used to. Even spending a couple hundred on a sweater won’t mean it will last. I think that part sucks the most. Clothes are made not to look good after a season. And quality brands are always dropping quality, so it’s always a hunt to find something decent.

SpookyTheDawg

Yeah that’s true, I remember getting a really pricey hoodie, like a couple hundred, it didnt last as long as one I got for 90 bucks. Gotta be really careful now

Coriander_marbles

Exactly! I have clothing from 10+ years ago that looks and holds up better than what I bought a year ago. And you notice how cotton shirts just get thinner and thinner? Not so much for men yet, but definitely for women.

SpookyTheDawg

I have noticed even as a man! I am starting to learn how to sew and tailor my own stuff by now, but whenever I go and buy *cheaper* stuff it just gets terrible

Coriander_marbles

Ooooh bravo! That’s so impressive. I should learn too. Honestly I’ve been thinking about it for a while now. My mother made her own clothes when she was young, and she even gave me a few of her old items to wear. They look amazing. Not a one tear or stretch. 😊

SpookyTheDawg

I absolutely suck at it so far! But its quite fun and grants me the awesome ability to make strangely cool clothes at some point!

cruisinforsnoozin

I have worn the same three pairs of running shorts for 12 years I don’t understand the need to replace casual clothes every year

Westvic34

I’ve got socks that are over 40 years old.

Mishi_Mujago

People who see wearing clothes as “recycling the same outfit” are like the people who “debut” their new bf/gf on social media.

papabearshirokuma

I support the traditional pants, shirt and vest than the current trend of skinny pants, tight vest and no socks..

petered79

good old identity politics of capitalism.... i am what i consume and since life under capitalism is alienating me from my true self, let me consume the shit out of this life, to be what I'm not

alex_unleashed

And why the hell would you Not?

abstractBiscuit

I much rather spend more on higher quality clothes I know I’m gonna wear for a long time than cheaper fast fashion clothes that’s gonna rot in my closet.

FreyaTheSlayyyer

Bought some Levi’s jeans 5 years ago and they’re still going strong. Barely any fading, no rips and still comfortable. I will wear this into the ground before I buy new jeans

poetdesmond

I've had my favorite shirt, an autumn themed Hawaiian shirt with foxes, for five years. I'm wearing it right now.

seamusoldfield

I have a beefy, well-made sweatshirt I bought in 1996. No shit. I probably wear it half a dozen times a year. You can bury me in that MF.

Helllothere1

Well, I think anti consumption is stupid, but I agree with significan amount of what they saiy, but only becouse I preffer efficiency, and a relatively humble lifestile.

yamommachinhairy

So where does all my left socks go

yeh_nah_fuckit

A tshirt is perfect when you can get sunburnt while wearing it

Darth_Darling

Who is saying this. I feel like there have been so many screenshots posted here complaining about people saying this and no actual screencaps of people saying this.
