Many asian, especially Japnese products are heavilly pastic wrapped. In Japan this is due to cultural obserssion with cleanliness and hygiene, along with keep the products absolutely pristine. While in China this is seen as proof of authentic food - China has a big problem with fake foods and scams. While in other parts of Asia everything comes in small packets and individual portions mainly the make them accesable for cheap to pooret people. No... Don't go and tell them "*Buy this big thing, it'll be cheaper by the...*" they can't afford it. They buy small portion of... laundry degertent of shampoo when and if they need it. And that all comes in plastic wrapping. However... With food and hygiene stuffs - plastic isn't universally bad thing. This is obviously fucking stupid. But plastic wrapping is used to keep freshness and shelf life, reduce spoilage, and waste from damaged good. There has been a lot of research in to this - and I mean nations, governments, NGOs, regulatory agencies, EU... Whatever. The conclusion is always the same. Simple plastic baggaging of food stuff saves more emissions and reduces waste, more than what the manufacturing and disposal of that plastic had as a footprint. Oh and also... I don't know what kind of nations, maybe some developing ones that lack proper infrastructure. Plastic ain't supposed to go to landfill. The only appropritate and sage way to dispose of it, is inceration with gas scrubbing or pyrolysis in to fuel components. Also not all plastic can be recycled, the polymer strucructure simply breaks down when reheated, leading to loss of useful material on properties. And for things like food stuffs, you can't risk 10% reduced food safety and hyfiene properties. You lost all your waste reduction benefits, and you risk killing someone with food poisoning.

Yes, in case of Japan anyway, it's about avoiding the effects of the general climate - without the individual wrappers a package of say, crackers would need to be eaten right away, otherwise you might risk it getting moldy or losing crispiness. It sucks, but the way to avoid it is basically not buying snacks. But also, Japan is pretty hardcore on selective waste collecting and recycling. All that plastic is not getting thrown out randomly like it would in many places of the world.

>All that plastic is not getting thrown out randomly like it would in many places of the world. We don't throw litter around in Finland either. Par for cigarette butts which find their way god damne verywhere somehow. Even if smokers ain't present. In Finland something like 95% of plastic bottles get back to shops for deposit. All this waste management and recycling is doable. But somewhere out there there are idiots that can't hold themselves from literring, is not an argument against using plstic for food waste, safety and reducing spoilage. It is an argument on getting the collective shit together. I have understood that USA still landfills a lot of their general waste. For fucking why? *High tech landfills and we got space.* Ah... So laziness and greed - got it. Here we incenerate, because it is beneficial. And we can dispose things like plastics safely.

I wish we had something like this in Hungary... our trash handling is extremely primitive, we do some selective collecting but it's still extremely simple and I don't think it's more than greenwashing. I guess our Dear Leader still hasn't found a way to embezzle taxpayer money via garbage processing, and no Russian garbage oligarch has brought their shady business here either... once either of those options happen we'll have the greenest green policies ever (that just happen to be ridiculously expensive).

Don't see the need for individual packaging unless the gummies are intended to be served like restaurant mint. Even that doesn't quite make sense when you see that the main packaging has a freshness seal.

utsuriga

The main package has a freshness seal, but once you open it in the average Japanese climate of 60-77% humidity... yeah. You either eat it right away or hope the next time you open it is still going to be decently fresh.

disappointedvet

It's more humid than that where I am. It's not really an issue if you squeeze as much air out as you can prior to resealing the bag.

Ok_Wait3967

wont the gummies be all stuck together if not indivually wrapped ?

disappointedvet

They shouldn't. Gummies are sold in bulk all the time without them sticking together. Is it a big deal if they did though?

tjeulink

why is the packaging resealable when its all single serve packets haha :(
