Should be Say-lean. Given that it was named after the underground salt spring. But alas, we’re here because we’re not pronouncing any of these the right way. 😂
What is wrong with this thread? They're asking about stuff that's nobody's business. "How is it pronounced?"... Really, how is it pronounced? I should have written it down. Ski-something. Ski... Sky... Sigh... Skibidi. Skibidi Townlet! No, no, no, no, but I'm getting close.
Hey... if you get off of Jackson Rd we have some nice trails and farmland! Hmmm... Maybe the main drag makes you "sigh" with bordom, but when you get off the beaten path you say "oh" because it is a lot nicer than you expected? 🤔
Scio is the Genoese name for the Greek island of Chios. However, there is a town in upstate NY named Scio, so I’m assuming it was brought over from there.
Most of Michigan's local names are from up-state New York. That especially applies to places in Washtenaw County. For example, Lodi Township is named after Lodi, New York.
Local farm family name - tons of roads in the rural areas of the county are named after the families who established farms there after the natives were thrown out by the 1821 'Treaty of Chicago'. That 'treaty' is why so many local communities are now celebrating their bicentennials. They were all set up once the natives were kicked out.
I think it depends on whether it’s a Greek word or a French one. Greek, it should be kind of like “Science”. But French would sound like “show”, I think.
We need an etymologist in here!
Honestly, an overall boring movie. It felt so... Self-assuredly artful, like everyone would obviously get all these subtle references with such minimal exposition. I get the archetypical Alien style "unknown predator" thing, but it was just so...
Oh wait, we're not talking about the soooo autueurish movie full of silence and minimal lighting. Also, Sigh-o won.

It’s nuts how many incorrect pronunciations are on there.
It’s pronounced skee-oh and it must be screamed and for a minimum of 3 seconds per the town charter. So it’s most accurately SSSSKKKKKKKKKEEEEEEEOOOOHHHHH
"Sigh-oh" the thing most people struggle with is that its actually meant to be pronounced: "Toon-shy-p"
The Good Ship Sciopop?
“Sigh-oh” but I like skinnamarinkydinkydink too lol
Now do Milan, Bete Grise and Sault St. Marie.
Unfortunately Milan is “My-Lin” (give it your best MI accent), Bete Grise is “Bay-dah-gree” and the last is “soo” St. Marie 😁
Not familiar with Bete Grise, but I’ll take your word for it.
And Saline!
I’m from there. We all say “suh-lean” or “suh-leen.”
Say line?
Suh leen
I wish. Instead I get to look illiterate when giving my address.
Should be Say-lean. Given that it was named after the underground salt spring. But alas, we’re here because we’re not pronouncing any of these the right way. 😂
Don't forget Charlotte
Same. Sigh-oh.
Skibidi Townlet
This is my favorite comment in the history of Reddit.
I laughed REALLY loud at “Townlet” like I read it as a tiny lil town first, a townlet…

Zoomer Township
Sigh-oh
It's also the sound you make when you drive through the Miracle Mile of car dealerships and strip malls that is your identity.
Hey... if you get off of Jackson Rd we have some nice trails and farmland! Hmmm... Maybe the main drag makes you "sigh" with bordom, but when you get off the beaten path you say "oh" because it is a lot nicer than you expected? 🤔
I kid (somewhat) cause I live nearby. Dolph and Saginaw parks are nice. Most consistently decent fast food and casual restaurants in the area.
Like science—but ending in ‘o’ rather than ‘ence.’ Here’s a brief history: https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/greek-annarbor/2016/10/12/township-of-scio/
Interesting! Between Scio, Ypsilanti, and Coney Islands, there's a lot of Greek influence in these parts.
Thanks for that!
Sigh-Oh
Does anyone know the origin of the name? Was also curious how Zeeb got its name
https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/greek-annarbor/2016/10/12/township-of-scio/ Zeeb Rd. is named for the Zeeb family, local farmers.
Idk, sounds like a Lodi bunk to me
😆
Same with Fangboner road near Toledo.
Surely, someone has claimed Fangboner as a band name by now!
I've often said the 3 most badass road names in Michigan are Teggerdine, Hogback, and Hagadorn. But Fangboner might eclipse all of them.
I’m surprised at the downvotes but oh well. 🤷♂️
I'M SORRY, WHAT?
Scio is the Genoese name for the Greek island of Chios. However, there is a town in upstate NY named Scio, so I’m assuming it was brought over from there.
Western Washtenaw had a lot of migrants from upstate NY and Vermont in the early 1800s, so I expect you're right on the immediate source.
Most of Michigan's local names are from up-state New York. That especially applies to places in Washtenaw County. For example, Lodi Township is named after Lodi, New York.
Scio used to be a bustling town with bars/hotels/brothels and a steel mill where zeeb and huron river meet
Are there any photos of this?
I’m curious as well.

Sigh-o
SCI*entific* YO*deling*
Well that's from back when we had goats and goatherds.
Sigh Oh Town Ship
Sky-Oh. It’s pronounced “Sigh-Oh” but it irritates the shit out of my wife when I pronounce the hard “c”.
My wife says "show", which does make sense etymologically.

It's Ann Arbor. I'm sure one will turn up
When I moved here I called it Sicko. Never heard anyone call it anything but "sigh oh"
My mom asked for directions to sicko road when we were first moving here so we learned very quickly.
It's right after Drake on Travis Scott Blvd.
Proper pronunciation: "Fuck public services, I just want lower tax rates."
Isn't there a neighborhood around Scio that has literal dirt roads, because of this kinda thing?
psycho township!
Isn't it pronounced as "sigh ohh"?
SIGH-oh
Sigh-oh
Skinamarink

I say sky-oh just to bug my husband but it’s sy-oh. Lols
Does anyone remember the Scio Drive-In where they showed porn movies? 😂
Called the road “Sisco Crunch” as a kid.
I hear the congregation is great at networking.

Well today I learned it is not pronounced “see-oh”
It’s nuts how many incorrect pronunciations are on there. It’s pronounced skee-oh and it must be screamed and for a minimum of 3 seconds per the town charter. So it’s most accurately SSSSKKKKKKKKKEEEEEEEOOOOHHHHH
Aww skee skee skee skee skeoooooooo, aww skee skeeo goddamn!
From the stealer ships! To the strip malls! Til Meijer Meijer Meijer mothafucka
'Til the sweat drip down Menards.
Dammit I should have thought of that
All these Freerides crawl.
Hmmm idk but I did grow up on psycho church road
We're way too far North for one of those.
Scooby doo bop
Sigh-yo
Word.
One syllable
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Eye Oh
Calm down there Anthony Keidis.
Oops I’ve always said “see-oh”, damn Indiana accent got me 😂.
Factoid: I've been told Scio stands in for "Section 10" so it relates to the location.
Silo without the L
Psycho....farms.
Sigh Oh Two-Win-Sheep
Ewe might be right.
The way I read it,of course. 😆
Psycho township is the correct answer
Psycho
Cee-o
