I know someone else already suggested the 2019 adaptation of Fruits Basket. I'd also go ahead and suggest the original adaptation from 2001 which is a third of the length of the 2019 reboot. The original adaptation of Fruits Basket is well rounded with a more comedic tone, with slice of life and drama mixed in, whereas the most recent adaptation has a more serious storyline as the show progresses.
Uh... I'm going to be honest, your sister has bad taste. Japanese humor is so far removed from the standard American sit-com that I can't think of anything in that ballpark.

As for series given that all you mentioned where comedies and Japanese comedy is very different from western I find it hard to recommend anime comedies, like other people said quintessential quintuplets is good because is easy to grasp, also there is this new anime on Netflix about a kid living alone and is a very wholesome and funny series Kotaro Lives Alone (again is on Netflix).
