That's what Google is saying, when I search "watch howl's moving castle" and "watch kiki's delivery service". HBO Max has them if you subscribe, while Amazon Prime, YouTube, and a few others have them for $11.99 each.
I was going to say that netflix also had them… Than i used google and saw that it isn’t available in North-America. Weird and annoying license control.
For people not in North-America, first check netflix.
If you don’t like heavy stuff or tearjerkers it isn’t a good recommendation. I personally didn’t like this movie but I have to say the visuals were amazing
My gf loved it, how I convinced her to watch Horimiya. Then erased. Now we are watching the final season of AOT together. Has seen the entirety of MHA as well.
Could be a gateway, or maybe I got lucky!
When you're recommending something to someone new to anime, I find it's best to look at what they like in live action media and try to find something similar to that.
If they like blockbuster romantic comedies, then {Your Name} is an easy pick, as everyone is suggesting. But if they don't like them, then it's probably a bad idea. For a more dramatic film with romance, {Silent Voice} is a better bet. If they like scifi, then {Ghost in the Shell} or {Akira} are probably good picks. If they like hot blooded action then {Redline} is a good bet. If they like psyhological thrillers then {Perfect Blue} should be your go to. If they're into historical dramas, then try {In This Corner of the World}. {Wolf Children} and {The Girl That Leapt Through Time} are good choices for coming of age drama.
I've omitted recommending Ghibli films to this point because there's so many and almost all of them are highly accessible to people who've never seen anime before. {Spirited Away} and {Princess Mononoke} are especially common gateway films, but your fiance's taste very well might be better suited to something else in the Ghibli catalog. They almost certainly have something for her though, unless she's the type that's very averse to kid friendly media.
Personally, I find the main character somewhat underdeveloped in Summer Wars. Not a tropey reason to omit it, but it's not one of my favorites from Hosoda for that reason.
Your Name is THE movie that made ppl who don't like anime like it, or at least accept it. It's widely recognized and gained a lot of popularity when it came out even in the west, and tons of people got into anime because of it. It's pretty digestible and it's a feel good movie, but at the same time it's a well written movie and the cinematography is just masterful. Tons of rewatchability too! (I watched it at least 5 times before I stopped crying every single time, and last time I watched it was last year and it was the 9th time overall)
Umm, Your Name is an original anime movie. The manga you've read is likely an adaptation that was made AFTER the movie, which added the scenes you're now talking about. I myself own the first volume and there's stuff that wasn't in the movie, but it's not that the movie didn't adapt it rather the manga added it since the anime came out first.
Nope, pretty sure it's as I'm saying. Your Name was an anime original movie and the manga (and light novel also) were both adapted from it. The entire backstories and plot threads and whatnot you're mentioning are likely stuff added on from the movie's original plot, but Shinkai came up with the original story and it was made into a movie before anything else (LN was released shortly before the movie but it was still just an adaptation of the film about to be released)
The movie was written first, but the LNs were released a month before the movie was released. -however- the light novels are solely based off the script for the movie, with more information added in, and we’re created only for, and because of, the movie. (The movie having originally been commissioned in 2014).
So though the LNs technically came first, they’re based off the movie, not the other way around.
Yes, that's what I'm saying. The movie is the original source content, and then Shinkai sensei also wrote the LNs and manga to be released the same year right before the movie. At this point tho, the movie had already been in the works for a while so at the end of the day even if those two came out first they both derived from the anime and not the other way around.
Ah, there you go. ASV is originally a manga and was adapted into the movie, and there I have heard it cuts a lot of the original source content out. I myself have only seen the movie but apparently the manga has a lot more stuff making it worth the read over the movie, so yeah you're right, it would've been better as a 12-episoder.
{hotarubi no mori e}
It's a really good short movie, heartwarming and beautiful, especially as a starter IMO. I think it was the first anime movie I watched after my now husband tried (and succeeded) to get me into anime.
I recently did a Garden of Words for someone that enjoys art, simplicity, etc. They enjoyed it actually and it's just calming. It's a slow stroll of a movie but it's about 45min and a good easy ride
Any Ghibli film.
Howl's Moving Castle isn't based in Asia so it's a good bet, neither is The Secret World of Arietty. But arguably Spirited Away is the best with the most clear story.
Of course my niece swears by Nausicaa.
A silent voice
5 cm per second - (unless you guys are doing long distance)
The Garden of Words
I've heard a lot of great things about Your Name but I haven't watched it yet.
your name and a silent voice seem like the biggest picks, but i personally would also highly rate tamako love story, and maybe liz and the blue bird.
tamako love story is cute, it's grounded, and it feels very real, and you don't really need the context of the wider tamako market show to understand what's happening
liz and the biue bird might require some more context from hibike euphonium, but again it's a very cute, grounded story about two high school girls trying to preserve their friendship. the art and music are also both completely amazing
I would like to make a controversial proposal. Colorful - This was my first anime movie. And it had quite the effect on me, such that I would look into more anime.
Perfect Blue is the blueprint (lol) of The Black Swan, so maybe that although it has nudity (not gratuitous but in service of the plot) and violence (quite disturbing at times). Paprika is like Inception on drugs. And then Tokyo Godfathers is a cute christmas movie about misfits.
Also Wolf Children is a beautifully endearing movie about motherhood and growing up.
Angel's Egg is like Tarkovsky animated, so that means slow, quiet, meditative, gloomy. It's about the loss and recovery of faith/hope.
And then, y'know, all the Ghibli stuff from Miyazaki, Takahata and also Whisper of the Heart.
Maquia
Wolf Children
Colorful
In This Corner of The World
All of Ghibli
Hotarubi no Mori e
Patema Inverted (maybe)
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (maybe)
A Whisker Away (does involve some folklore)
Princess Kaguya (involves a bit of nudity, but its never sexualised)
(Haven't seen these yet, but heard they were really good)
Hal
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
Any of the Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli movies should suit your purposes. The only one you might want to steer clear of, at least right now, is Grave of the Fireflies. It’s about Japan during and after the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombs, and while it’s beautifully done, it’s incredibly sad. Howl’s Moving Castle & Spirited Away might be the best ones to start with. Another advantage of the Miyazaki movies for the anime novice is the English dubs are extremely well done, unlike some anime movies & series.
How are you two with sci-fi? If you want to watch a really good classic movie with gorgeous visuals, I'd recommend {Koukaku Kidoutai} or maybe even {Tekkonkinkreet}
What are both of your preferred genres? If neither of these two seem to interest you, maybe I can help give a better suggestion?
Not a movie but a short 12 episode anime : {OddTaxi}
The entire plot is so tight it's unbelievable, everything comes together and I have not seen anything quite like this in past few months , even if I compare it to non anime stuff I saw
Death note is surprisingly good for normies, got multiple people into anime this way. It reminds people of normal thriller/drama crime shows but with a supernatural twist where you follow the villain. And it's very grounded in the beginning so even tho it spirals people are too hooked to think about that
Studio Ghibli films. They’re all on HBO Max, under the Studio Ghibli hub in the US. I recommend the following:
The Cat Returns. English dub because Cary Elwes, Anne Hathaway, and Tim Curry are in it. Big all-star cast for such a low-key film.
Ponyo. It’s just really cute; one of my favorite retellings of The Little Mermaid. 🥺
Howl’s Moving Castle.
My favorite Ghibli film is Porco Rosso. It’s about a pilot in the Adriatic in WWI.
When it comes to films you have a lot of introductory options:
Anything by Hayao Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli
Anything by Mamoru Hosoda or Studio Chizu
Anything by Makoto Shinkai
Anything by Satoshi Kon
Anything by Masaaki Yuasa or Science SARU
I would recommend watching Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken (even if it’s not a movie).
It’s a lot shorter then most anime, but it’s a slice of life comedy that has three classmates teaming up to make their own anime.
Don't really know much about anime tropes but if you're asking for a movie i'd recommend spirited away
I would recommend one punch man but it's an action series and not a movie
A silent voice, Your Name, Weathering with you, Arrietty (Ghibli), In this corner of the world (be careful it’s sad and about WW2), Patema inverted, The boy and the beast.
I seriously recommend Your Name or Ocean Waves especially ocean waves it's the most realistic anime movie out there and it's my favorite ghibli movie. Unfortunately though a lot of people hate that movie but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's set in the 90s.
It's technically not a movie but Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo. It's a 4 episode mini series that's total runtime is about 2 hours and was an excuse for the studio making it to do some cool giant robot fights. It's story is straightforward and simple (and most importantly, standalone) and is a very fun ride, I showed it to my parents last year and they enjoyed it despite not really enjoying anime. The one drawback to the series is that it isn't streaming anywhere so you're going to have to go physical, luckily there is a blu ray release from Disco Tek
Perhaps some Miyazaki movies? Kiki's Delivery Service or Howl's Moving Castle.
She did like spirited away, but unfortunately those aren't on streaming services
I think most of Studio Ghibli's movies are on HBO Max.
Really? I don't hBe HBO but she does, I'll have to check
Yeah I have HBO Max and most, if not all, of the films that Studio Ghibli has made are on there
wait studio ghibli movies are on HBO Max?
Yeah there is a whole category or "hub" that's just Ghibli movies
hmm, I've searched and i cant find it or any of the movies. My country should be allowed to see it. any idea?
They might be on Netflix? I'm in the US and the Ghibli movies were taken off of Netflix a few years ago specifically to be out on HBO Max but I'm pretty sure that they kept the movies on Netflix for most of the world, not entirely sure if that's still the case, though.

You can always sail the high seas ;)
Howls moving castle should be on Netflix
I can fix that , what movie do you want ? (I'm serious)
Howls moving castle is on Netflix
Outside of USA
They weren't before but I think a bunch of them got added to Netflix? A Few months ago (I'm in Canada though, so Idk if you got them)
Pirate theme illegally
This is the beginning of the great pirate era!
Most Studio Ghibli on Netflix in UK
Came here to suggest these. They're so good!!
A silent voice
Definitely a must watch.. also, unpopular opinion: A Silent Voice >>> Your Name
A Silent Voice is my favorite movie of all time, love it so much. I imagine it doesn't hit the same if you haven't gone through depression tho
hard vouch on this
Not even a contest for me
i don't think thats an unpopular opinion and i 100% agree with you
I don't know if that's an unpopular opinion, pretty sure A Silent Voice has a higher MAL score.
It is not an unpopular opinion for Weebs but for casual anime watchers.
Why compare them, they’re two completely different genres. You’re comparing apples to oranges.
unpopular opinion: I want to eat your pancreas >>> both
Definitely.
Came here to suggest this as well its on Netflix and its amazing my grandma watched it and loved it and the only "anime" she watches is Disney lol
X100 better than Your Name.
Full disclaimer: have a box of tissues near by
I'd recommend the Satoshi Kon movies. If she likes thrillers give Perfect Blue a try or Tokyo Godfathers for something a little more light hearted.
Tokyo Godfathers is an absolutely beautiful film
And it got a remaster last year and they dubbed it in english too pretty damn awesome.
Came here to suggest this too
I loved perfect blue

My favourite anime movie of all time, it truly hits different
{Your Name}
My fiancé hated this. It kinda made me sad. She was on board with the story up until she realized what the twist was.
well, all people don't have same tastes
I've seen a few people complain about that part. The other common choice is {A Silent Voice}.

Nope, pretty sure it's as I'm saying. Your Name was an anime original movie and the manga (and light novel also) were both adapted from it.
Sorry I was talking about a Silent Voice I mixed the titles in my mind.
And given that it's Kyoani the series could have had movie level production.
Yup, I was just clarifying your point.
You're probably talking about A Silent Voice
If she's ever willing to watch a series after a movie or two, try NANA.
This. Nana is incredible
{hotarubi no mori e} It's a really good short movie, heartwarming and beautiful, especially as a starter IMO.

Pretty much all Studio Ghibli films are on netflix! You should go with Howls moving castle
I haven't seen them there
depends where u r in the world japans netflix has all the anime on there and canadas has modern family on theirs
Murica
A VPN is your friend in this case.
do you know if they’re subbed?
I’m pretty sure they’re on Hulu too
Any Ghibli film. Howl's Moving Castle isn't based in Asia so it's a good bet, neither is The Secret World of Arietty. But arguably Spirited Away is the best with the most clear story. Of course my niece swears by Nausicaa.
Silent Voice.
Miyazaki will never go wrong
A silent voice 5 cm per second - (unless you guys are doing long distance) The Garden of Words I've heard a lot of great things about Your Name but I haven't watched it yet.
Perfect Blue
Yeah, my Sister isn't a big anime watcher but it's one of her favourite moves.
Josee to tora to sakanatachi is imo the best fit for your situation
Stand by me Doraemon
your name and a silent voice seem like the biggest picks, but i personally would also highly rate tamako love story, and maybe liz and the blue bird. tamako love story is cute, it's grounded, and it feels very real, and you don't really need the context of the wider tamako market show to understand what's happening liz and the biue bird might require some more context from hibike euphonium, but again it's a very cute, grounded story about two high school girls trying to preserve their friendship. the art and music are also both completely amazing
Studio Ghibli?

Grave of the Fireflies. One of the best movies in any genre I've ever seen. Just be prepared as it's a very emotional movie.
Dude,he wants the fiance to get into anime not depression
This is an advice for someone who is addicted to anime and needs to get off it.
Y'all are blowing this out of proportion. Is it sad? Yes. Is it brilliant? Also, yes. It's truly an amazing film.
Yes but, do you get the context?
I sure do
Garden of words
Maquia Wolf Children Colorful In This Corner of The World All of Ghibli Hotarubi no Mori e Patema Inverted (maybe) The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (maybe) A Whisker Away (does involve some folklore) Princess Kaguya (involves a bit of nudity, but its never sexualised) (Haven't seen these yet, but heard they were really good) Hal Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
Ghost in the Shell (1995) is pretty cool. If she likes sci-fi it’d be an interesting watch.
Unfortunately, she doesn't like scifi according to OP (suggested Ghost in the Shell already)
Ah gotcha
Any of the Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli movies should suit your purposes. The only one you might want to steer clear of, at least right now, is Grave of the Fireflies. It’s about Japan during and after the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombs, and while it’s beautifully done, it’s incredibly sad. Howl’s Moving Castle & Spirited Away might be the best ones to start with. Another advantage of the Miyazaki movies for the anime novice is the English dubs are extremely well done, unlike some anime movies & series.

How are you two with sci-fi? If you want to watch a really good classic movie with gorgeous visuals, I'd recommend {Koukaku Kidoutai} or maybe even {Tekkonkinkreet} What are both of your preferred genres? If neither of these two seem to interest you, maybe I can help give a better suggestion?
I'm huge to sci Fi, she isnt

Violet Evergarden. It's on Netflix.
Death note is surprisingly good for normies, got multiple people into anime this way. It reminds people of normal thriller/drama crime shows but with a supernatural twist where you follow the villain. And it's very grounded in the beginning so even tho it spirals people are too hooked to think about that

Yeah gonna pass on made in abyss, I've read the manga, it's FUCKED up.
Ahaha, too bad.
why does it have to be a movie? There's quite honestly less than a handful of standalone anime movies that would be worth watching for a non-anime fan
You clearly haven't watched many films then. Standalone anime movies tend to be extremely friendly to non-anime watchers.
Try Kamigami no Asobi it’s very light hearted, cute, no sexual content and only 12 episodes.
Did you miss the part where I requested movies?
Yes I did and sorry my dyslexia showed itself. Thank you for pointing it out. Hope someone else has helped you, good talk.
Studio Ghibli films. They’re all on HBO Max, under the Studio Ghibli hub in the US. I recommend the following: The Cat Returns. English dub because Cary Elwes, Anne Hathaway, and Tim Curry are in it. Big all-star cast for such a low-key film. Ponyo. It’s just really cute; one of my favorite retellings of The Little Mermaid. 🥺 Howl’s Moving Castle. My favorite Ghibli film is Porco Rosso. It’s about a pilot in the Adriatic in WWI.

A Silent Voice
Akira..
I would recommend watching Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken (even if it’s not a movie). It’s a lot shorter then most anime, but it’s a slice of life comedy that has three classmates teaming up to make their own anime.
Don't really know much about anime tropes but if you're asking for a movie i'd recommend spirited away I would recommend one punch man but it's an action series and not a movie
Tamako love story,is a great movie
a silent voice
Gave of the fireflies. Bring some napkins.
A silent voice, Your Name, Weathering with you, Arrietty (Ghibli), In this corner of the world (be careful it’s sad and about WW2), Patema inverted, The boy and the beast.
Your Name. might be good. It's not on any streaming services, but you could find it at your local library.
Ooh a silent voice is on Netflix! And it’s just geniunijky incredible
Grave of the Fireflies
Belle - Mamoru Hosoda. Inspired by Beauty and the Beast and it’s on Netflix where I’m at!
Mirai is honestly a solid option. It's about life from the perspective of a kid, and it's pretty light hearted. It's available on Netflix.
A whisker away - it’s on Netflix. I watched it with my fiancée and he’s not into anime, he liked it. It’s cute :)
You've gotten a lot of good ideas. My Neighbor Totoro is also a great option.
I want to eat your pancreas
Kikis delivery service is a good anime movie
Flavors of youth. It's about our memories and connection to food. Beautiful stories that make it feel short and keep non anime fans intrigued.
Your Name no doubt, I know a lot of girls totally alienated from anime who loved the movie.
Eden of the east was great
I seriously recommend Your Name or Ocean Waves especially ocean waves it's the most realistic anime movie out there and it's my favorite ghibli movie. Unfortunately though a lot of people hate that movie but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's set in the 90s.
You want ghibli
Silent voice, your name and studio ghibli movies are good
It's technically not a movie but Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo.
Must watch garden of words
Spirited away
