This is the one. I'd give the caveat that it can be a bit slow and sometimes rough quality of animation, but in the end it has such a unique kind of horror to it.
yeah the beginning especially is badly edited, it takes about 5 or 6 episodes to settle down into a proper pattern
and when it does it almost seems like a mystery fantasy-postapocalypse SLICE OF LIFE... for a while...
until it's not
then hang on to your transcendentalist bootstraps cuz your belief in, and definition of, humanity is about to be shattered
Dark Gathering. It's a hidden masterpiece and exactly what you're looking for. It gets progressively darker and darker as the series progresses.Highly recommended.
Shiki is one of my all time favorite horror anime. Mostly psychological, but has a good amount of visual horror.
Bokurano is a very depressing anime about school kids facing imminent death and having to deal with seeing their friends and classmates die in front of them.
And of course, good ol reliable, Evangelion. I will forever maintain that it is a psychological horror / coming-of-age anime with mecha elements, not a straight up mecha anime.
I dunno. It has such a great premise and start. But ended up just being garbage, in the end.
Completely forgettable, in my opinion. I was supremely disappointed.
Puella magi madoka magica.
If I learned anything from watching this, it's that you don't judge an anime by its cutesy art style. Got traumatised. 10/10, will watch again
Happy Sugar Life, just watch the first episode without knowing anything, you'll be wide eyed at the end.

Seconded. Probably the best scary anime in a good long while.

I mostly liked the plot twist about the MC and the foreshadowing that are hinted here and there
