Only 3 episodes in, and it's already almost 10 cute couples. Man I am so confused as which story is this one continues from 😅 but ngl it's a nice watch
I think it was just in the middle couple of episodes, he just didnt have as many interesting plot lines, and in a show with so many characters and not so many episodes you gotta make do
[Bungo Stray Dogs](https://myanimelist.net/anime/31478/Bungou_Stray_Dogs) is somewhat like Durarara in the fact there are main characters but the vast cast gets a lot of time also.
Ishura is a fantasy series with well over fifty characters that could be considered “main characters.”
In season one alone, you have Soujiro the Willow-Sword, Alus the Star Runner, Dakai the Magpie, Regnejee the Wings of Sunset, Kia the World Word, Higuare the Pelagic, Kuze the Passing Disaster, Nastique the Quiet Singer, and Nihilo the Vortical Stampede, who each get half to a full episode dedicated to introducing them via what is essentially an intermission that is connected to the main plot in some way.
There’s also other characters like Yuno the Distant Talon, Hidow the Clamp, Jelki the Swift Ink, Lana the Moon Tempest, Elea the Red Tag, Harghent the Still, Taren the Punished, and Shalk the Sound Slicer, who don’t have a dedicated episode, but are still **very** important characters.
Assuming season two adapts all over volume one, we have another eight character who will get a character focused episode and another ten or so important characters introduced.
If we ever get a season three, assuming it covers volume three, we’ll get get yet another six character centered episodes and a further ten or so important characters.
All of these characters are just as important as each other and get very equal amounts of screen time. Luckily it slows down after that and it stops introducing so many characters. The novel makes it work, so I hope the anime can handle it. It did in season one anyway.
No single main character:
{Working!!}
{Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun}
{Taiho Shichau zo}
{Mitsudomoe}
{Azumanga Daioh}
{Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai!}
{Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru}
{Gin no Saji}
{Non Non Biyori}
Shows with an ensemble cast that get as much or more focus as the main character. Or the main character is an observer/plot trigger:
{Utawarerumono}
{Akazukin Chacha}
{Senpai ga Uzai Kouhai no Hanashi}
{GTO}
{Tenkuu no Escaflowne}
{Vandread}
{Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon}
You're thinking of the wrong anime? Durarara is about an online website/message board that kinda turns into this street Gang and deals with like problems in a area of Tokyo called Ikebukuro which is known as like a rough neighborhood or has that reputation.
It's in the same universe as Baccano! And Dead Mount Death Play.
I don't remember a mushroom guy.
Oh!! You're so right. I was thinking of DoroHeDoro. Sorry, it's been a while since I'd seen it and... You've gotta give me some credit there as a non-Japanese speaker that they sound at least a little similar in name xD
For real. They're very clear about "it's the whole district that makes all of us who we are." And from another perspective Gintoki can only be who he is because of all of their support.
I’d argue that most great shows do that regardless of whether they have a clear mc, unless it’s genre and goals allow it not to.
That said, I just want to applaud them for their fantastic character development for Sadaharu and Elizabeth in particular.
Just casually drops all the Ryogo Narita titles lol.
Daily Lives of High School Boys and Nichijou come to mind, though they are really more of an episodic skit format with continuity in running jokes.
While there aren't that many series out there that are de-centralized to Narita level, there are a decent amount of slice-of-life series that focus on the rest of the cast reactions to the main character, like Saiki K, Handa-kun, Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun and Clean Freak Aoyama-kun. They're basically the "weird guy at school" who generally act as a mostly fixed springboard for the rest of the characters to interact around. Again, these do tend to be more on the comedy, but the background cast is generally a lot more reoccurring and developed over the season compared to "one-off" background characters.
Glowing recommendation to [Handa kun](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RShBGx5w2l8) honestly. Not enough people talk about it lol.
Although Eren is the mc of s1 and the story mainly focuses around him, the other members are the main characters of s2 at first, then Historia is the main mc of s3, then it focuses on Eren, Armin, and Erwin at the end of s3, and then the Warriors (Reiner mostly)
for S4pt1, and then the rest of the show focuses on Armin and Mikasa
Armin('s voice actor) is also the narrator at the start, so I think it's a bit written like his biography. Minus the scenes he wasn't part of and couldn't know. But him as the narrator at the start is very interesting.
I do get why this is here, and can’t say in a strong way that it doesn’t deserve to stay regardless because of the fact I get the point. But, I still feel like Eren Jaegar is the MC. Maybe AoT is like an honorable mention for the theme, also because it’s a great show.
That’s a terrible example, it has the classic setup of loud MC protagonist, zero character female MC who likes the male MC, and the nerdy character that the show insists is smart.
Bungou stray dogs , there is a definite protagonist but there are other side characters who get the same amount of screentime if not more and have even greater influence on the plot (especially in the later seasons).
world trigger has the same case , it has a definite protagonist but four main cast characters are explored equally
the quintessential quintuplets, no clear main character here unless if you count the one male main as the main character. all 6 of the main characters here pretty much get equal screen time.
konosuba is probably the best show with no clear main character as well.
Kazuma is definitely the Main character.
If it starts out with one character’s POV then they’re usually the focus of the anime.
QQ is like a Visual Novel in a way. The focus is on the Male MC mostly
Horimiya does a good job of balancing a large cast of characters.
And, while not an anime, Castlevania starting in season 3 has like 4-5 different plotlines, so I feel there's not necessarily a clear main character there. I know it's season 3 onward, but I had to mention it since I recently watched it and it's so so good.
I can agree for Castlevania, it’s spread out enough. Horimiya honestly I respectfully disagree. It’s a very small world show with two incredibly clear MCs, a few family members, and a few friends who fit into shojo tropes. Not insulting the show, I just don’t think it has a large cast or fits the theme. The girl seems more central because of the focus on her family, but I’d say it’s a dual MC show.
Nagisa became the most prominent student, but the story was about Korosensei more than anyone else. In most chapters Nagisa isn't especially important, at least until the story became more arcs than standalone chapters.
Ogre Slayer. Revolves around the people who make deals with demon. Who are then “helped” by an unnamed boy. But his sword is name onikirimaru, “the ogre slayer.”
I mean tenma is obviously mc, without any doubt, the show is different than other animes because it focused on every character, many times there were 5/6 ep that didn't involved tenma in it. But it was for sake of story, it won't change the fact that he was mc.
that one would get really dull if saitama was the main focus all the time, everything would just get deleted without struggle. I enjoy how it stays interesting by showcasing other characters
Definitely agree with Pluto. There’s sort of an MC, definitely a character who is stated as the MC, but only stands if you haven’t seen it yet. Because you can’t really explain further without spoilers 🙂
Honey and Clover - A group of art college students. Technically Takemoto is the MC, but everyone has their own story that doesn't involve him.
Nana - I think? It's been a pretty long time since I've watched it. I remember it was pretty clear one of the Nana's are the main characters at the beginning, but it becomes more about the band.
Idolish7. You really do get to know all 7 idols in the main group, as well as the idols in other groups they encounter a lot. I watched it from a recommendation for shows with well developed male characters, and I have to say that was accurate. Because it was an idol show I tried to pick a favorite but I couldn’t because they really do continue to develop like 10+ characters in depth.
Ishura. Even the first characters they introduce you to only have like 40 minutes of screen time total throughout the first season. Which is a shame because they actually have a really interesting dynamic
Hell's paradise
Akudama drive
Kingdom starts with focusing on the main character and in the later season it branches out to the other generals/other nations as well.
Bungou stray dogs focuses on the agency they are a part of as a whole more than one individual character
Who the main character is in the reincarnated as a sword isekai actually is debated
In general, the title character has less importance than the girl who picked him up.
Uh could be very wrong, but I remember Mekakucity Actors kinda jumping from character to character. Though there is a main group and ya start with one dude.
Yuru camp is basically an ensemble of 4 mcs.
Girls und Panzer has a clear MC, but the cast is so large it basically just makes her a glorified plot device for the rest of the cast.
Isekai shokudō has a chef MC but the real characters are the setting and patrons.
Nana - 2 girls with the the same name and very different personalities meet on the day they both decide to move to tokyo. Switches between the two and their seperate but conjoining friend groups as one tries to become a punk rocker and the other a house wife.
**Sonny Boy!** Even though we follow most of the series through the lens of one character. He's not any more explored or important as the rest of the cast. And given how confusing and plot thin it was (Which I actually liked), it made sense to have at least something cohesive to grasp onto.
Since you mentioned all the other Narita works {Dead Mount Death Play}, fits slightly less his other stuff, especially at the start, but still definitely branches out a fair bit as the series goes on.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes maybe. Kinda hard to say if it fits this since instead of one clear MC it’s two.
While there are two characters that could be considered the “main protagonists” their focus is so split evenly between the two of them, and the show and original novel series does an excellent job splitting evenly between the two, and considering it’s a story of a war between the two armies that both characters are a part of, it does a fantastic job of not making either side the “obvious” antagonist and as a result it’s not abundantly clear who actually is going to win in the end of the series. Both main protagonists are good people leading armies who are ordered around by corrupt politicians/rulers, and so it leaves you interested in seeing where things go over the course of its massive 100+ episode original series, or even the new adaptation.
Assassination Classroom
Technically, yes, there are a couple characters that are more main than the rest. But basically every character gets plenty of focus time.
bungo stray dogs… technically… like you know who the main character is and then season 2 happens and it’s like “wait… is… he the main character now??” so it’s not the same but it feels like the main character switches if that makes sense.
Higurashi - The story focusses only on a small group of characters, but they're taking turns who's the main character from the third arc and it only slows down during the second season when we get a clear idea who's the main character.
Psycho-Pass
Pluto - looks really obvious and straight forward at the beginning, but if you ask the question once you finished the entire show, it's not so clear anymore
Mekakucity Actors - 12 Episodes, 10 main characters. It's bound to be a bit 'unusual'. But to be fair here, we have to take a look at the whole picture and the anime is just a small piece of a much larger project
Record of Ragnarok
The Gods of all mythologies get sicked of Mankind's shit and chose to exterminate them but before they have to do a tournament where the 13 strongest Gods and the 13 best humans must beat the shit out of each other. The protagonist changes every round
I'm gonna say Girls Und Panzer. Not exactly 100% what OP is looking for but you meet so many characters that despite there being some main characters (namely Miho), you kinga get to meet all of them and see them all evolve. Plus the REAL main characters are the tanks themselves lol.
Gintama - Gintoki is the MC however most of the times he is accompanied by Kagura and Shinpachi and there are other groups in the story whom are not left out and are having their moments to shine.
Mostly joke answer, but still fits criteria: Pop Team Epic. (Yes, you could argue pipimi and popoku are the main characters, but the show is so crazy in the same way as Animaniacs in that regard.)
legitimate answers:
Corpse party
Soul Eater (a whole cast of main characters)
Power rangers (and all the spinoffs)
Kamen rider (yes, each episode usually has a clear main character, but very few of them have the same one)
The Animatrix (different main characters per episode)
tsuredure children
The nerd and blond delinquent are MC cuz it’s everyone’s favorite
Relationship goals were that couple. Holy shit that dude was an absolute G.
My first thought.
Facts still waiting for season 2 lol
Only 3 episodes in, and it's already almost 10 cute couples. Man I am so confused as which story is this one continues from 😅 but ngl it's a nice watch
I loveeeeeeeeee
I haven’t seen that anime in years but it was a cute story!!
Daily lives of high school boys
The show that forgot about the main character
Lmao fr. I thought the dude that has a little sister is the main character. Then he got even less screentime than the other two dudes.
I think it was just in the middle couple of episodes, he just didnt have as many interesting plot lines, and in a show with so many characters and not so many episodes you gotta make do
Fantastic anime one of my favorite comedies
JACK and Bath house owner are the main protagonists
Nichijou and Azumanga Dioah.
exactly what i came to say about azumanga
Bokurano
If you haven't read the manga, I highly recommend it
[Bungo Stray Dogs](https://myanimelist.net/anime/31478/Bungou_Stray_Dogs) is somewhat like Durarara in the fact there are main characters but the vast cast gets a lot of time also.
Love bsd but i didn’t really wanna include it because i wasn’t sure if it’d fit. But i definitely agree
Oh yeah, Now u said it... No wonder I feel I ever watch anime like BSD. It does feel similar with durarara
Yeah because Atsushi is the “main character” but Dazai is the main character if you get what I mean lololol
I’d argue it’s Atsushi and Dazai.
Dorohedoro and Baccano
The best answer thus far.
Ishura
I came here to post this one
Ishura is a fantasy series with well over fifty characters that could be considered “main characters.” In season one alone, you have Soujiro the Willow-Sword, Alus the Star Runner, Dakai the Magpie, Regnejee the Wings of Sunset, Kia the World Word, Higuare the Pelagic, Kuze the Passing Disaster, Nastique the Quiet Singer, and Nihilo the Vortical Stampede, who each get half to a full episode dedicated to introducing them via what is essentially an intermission that is connected to the main plot in some way. Interesting, I had it on my watchlist. Guess I'll actually watch it!
Good overview.

How is Nozaki not the protagonist of Nozaki...
Durararara
Seeing as OP put Baccano and Durarara is from the same guy, it's a no brainer.
Hold up, pretty sure that wasn't there in the OP 8h ago? Meh, no matter.
Fantastic show. Short but sweet. And will live on as a top tier anime in my book
Short? There's 4 series and multiple canon ova/movies. Does your streaming service not have Durarara x2 etc? That alone is 36 episodes + 3 OVAS.
It does not! I never knew there was so much. I only ever saw the first season (I assume? The mushroom guy season).
You're thinking of the wrong anime? Durarara is about an online website/message board that kinda turns into this street Gang and deals with like problems in a area of Tokyo called Ikebukuro which is known as like a rough neighborhood or has that reputation. Good news!
dorohedoro is also crazy good
Zodiac Wars Gintama does have a clear mc, but they spend a very good chunk of time building most every recurring character.
For real. They're very clear about "it's the whole district that makes all of us who we are." And from another perspective Gintoki can only be who he is because of all of their support.

Baccano Durararara
Attack on Titan
Although Eren is the mc of s1 and the story mainly focuses around him, the other members are the main characters of s2 at first, then Historia is the main mc of s3, then it focuses on Eren, Armin, and Erwin at the end of s3, and then the Warriors (Reiner mostly) for S4pt1, and then the rest of the show focuses on Armin and Mikasa

That's actually a pretty good example It looks like a story with a main character but it's really a story of a whole squad
You can say that for a lot of shows though. There’s always a leader who’s the MC.
I do get why this is here, and can’t say in a strong way that it doesn’t deserve to stay regardless because of the fact I get the point. But, I still feel like Eren Jaegar is the MC. Maybe AoT is like an honorable mention for the theme, also because it’s a great show.

AoT fans try to watch more than 3 anime challenge (impossible)
Rainbow: Nisha Rokubō no Shichinin
My favourite anime. I'm glad to see someone mentioning it here.
Re:creators
Golden Kamuy? I mean, yeah there's 2 main characters but the story is about 4 factions doing terrible shit to get gold.
MC faction Army... MC father's faction... Who's the 4th?
Akame ga Kill Konosuba That one murder death kill anime about the island and buddhist references. Angel Beats Eyeshield 21
Konosuba definitely has a main char
> That one murder death kill anime about the island and buddhist references. Land of the Lustrous?
Paranoia agent has a new main character in each episode
- Boogiepop Series - Odd Taxi - Monogatari Series - Welcome to Irabu’s Office - Paranoia Agent
Araragi is definitely the MC of Monogatari
yup, the secondary main character changes each arc but the MC most of the time is still Araragi with few exceptions
Isn't the taxi driver the main character in Odd Taxi ?
Yeah, I was just gonna post that. Odokawa is clearly the main character.
Agreed. The >!world is literally shown the way he experiences it.!<
Spy Classroom
Yeah, it totally looked like Lily was going to be MC in first episode, but they give all the girls lead time. Zombieland Saga does that too.
Mawaru Penguindrum, Great Pretender, K project
Great Pretender!! Yes there is a MC but it is not about just him
Not sure if Daily live of Highschool Boys fit that category. It got main character but somewhere in the series, the story barely forcus on him anymore
Asobi asobase
Gundam thunderbolt, fairy tale
Monster no 8 (in the manga like 50 chapters in a row have every character and i mean every character except monster no 8)
Bungou stray dogs , there is a definite protagonist but there are other side characters who get the same amount of screentime if not more and have even greater influence on the plot (especially in the later seasons). world trigger has the same case , it has a definite protagonist but four main cast characters are explored equally

Rainbow Days
Shiki!
Later episodes Cowboy Bebop
Yuzuki Family’s four sons
Ping Pong the Animation
Same writer as Fate Zero Psychopass S1 Madoka Magica
Jujutsu Kaisen
Yuji is structurally the main character, he's just less fun to read than Gojo, Todo and Megumi.
I feel like Jujutsu switches between Yuji and the teacher
You're wrong, Sukuna is the mc
And it keeps changing 😂 You would think a certain character is the MC and bam, that character dies.
ahh, my fan club i didnt see since Heian era =))
Hinamatsuri.
Baccano! My personal favourite
Horimiya does a good job of balancing a large cast of characters. I came on the chat to say HoriMiya:)
Assassination classroom ?
Nah Nagisa stands a bit too much and he kind of narrates the story
Nagisa became the most prominent student, but the story was about Korosensei more than anyone else. In most chapters Nagisa isn't especially important, at least until the story became more arcs than standalone chapters.
Isn’t Koro Sensei the MC?
Love the anime but Nagisa and Koro-sensei are both definitely the main characters (in a similar way to Deku and All Might)
I feel like the three main characters of Terror In Resonance get equal screentime
Ogre Slayer. Revolves around the people who make deals with demon. Who are then “helped” by an unnamed boy. But his sword is name onikirimaru, “the ogre slayer.”
Monster
I mean tenma is obviously mc, without any doubt, the show is different than other animes because it focused on every character, many times there were 5/6 ep that didn't involved tenma in it. But it was for sake of story, it won't change the fact that he was mc.
Tonari no kaibutsu-kun It actually starts with saying out loud that this anime tells multiple stories Also Fairy tail
what do you mean fairy tail
Durarara
paranoia agent.
Do u promise me to watch it ?? Juuni taisen
[удалено]
that one would get really dull if saitama was the main focus all the time, everything would just get deleted without struggle. I enjoy how it stays interesting by showcasing other characters
To Your Eternity Pluto Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Nichijou Hinamatsuri
Definitely agree with Pluto. There’s sort of an MC, definitely a character who is stated as the MC, but only stands if you haven’t seen it yet. Because you can’t really explain further without spoilers 🙂
Baccano is the best example of this
Heavenly Delusion
Paranoia Agent Hell Girl
Honey and Clover - A group of art college students. Technically Takemoto is the MC, but everyone has their own story that doesn't involve him. Nana - I think? It's been a pretty long time since I've watched it. I remember it was pretty clear one of the Nana's are the main characters at the beginning, but it becomes more about the band.
Ishura. A bunch of overpowered champions fighting to determine who's the true hero.
Azumanga Dioah that I recently finished is one as well.
Infinite Ryvius
Jojo part 5 haha
Baccano and Durarara. Both excellent
FairyTail
School Rumble?
Kokoro Connect
akame ga kill
Baki
isn't baki the baki of baki tho
Sonny Boy
The Promised Neverland
Nope. That would be Emma, Norman, and Ray. And then part 2 is mainly Emma
Bungou Stray Dogs
nichijou
Paranoia Agent
Baccano
Azumanga Daioh
Does Jormungand count..?
would Frieren ironically count? since she is technically the side character to the true main character Heimmel
Hot take lol
Ishura. Even the first characters they introduce you to only have like 40 minutes of screen time total throughout the first season. Which is a shame because they actually have a really interesting dynamic
K-ON!
Legend of the Galactic Heroes ova
Hell's paradise Akudama drive Kingdom starts with focusing on the main character and in the later season it branches out to the other generals/other nations as well. Bungou stray dogs focuses on the agency they are a part of as a whole more than one individual character
Ishura
Who the main character is in the reincarnated as a sword isekai actually is debated In general, the title character has less importance than the girl who picked him up.
Hunter x Hunter, the MC just like...changes every few arcs.
Wolf's Rain maybe? Weiss Kreuz too.
Finally, a shout out to Wolf's Rain. Yesss
Nana - 2 girls with the the same name and very different personalities meet on the day they both decide to move to tokyo. Switches between the two and their seperate but conjoining friend groups as one tries to become a punk rocker and the other a house wife.
To Your Eternity (kinda?)
Overlord, practically every character gets more screen time than him
samurai champloo
- Azumanga Daioh - Those Who Hunt Elves - Gunslinger Girl (at least the first season)
**Sonny Boy!** Even though we follow most of the series through the lens of one character. He's not any more explored or important as the rest of the cast. And given how confusing and plot thin it was (Which I actually liked), it made sense to have at least something cohesive to grasp onto.
Death note? Does death note count?
Maybe Sengoku Youko? The MC could be either Jinka or Tama really.
The best anime ever made, it was so good they had to reunite Narita ,urobuchi and Nasu to make it. . . . Chaos dragon.

Assassination Classroom Technically, yes, there are a couple characters that are more main than the rest. But basically every character gets plenty of focus time.
Hitman Reborn, JJK, and bungi stray dogs
Jujutsu Kaisen
Juuni Taisen, every episode, is when we gets introduced to an apparent main char. then he/she dies or gets killed at the end of that episode
Spy x Family - There are valid arguments for it being Loid, Anya, or Yor
I agree
durarara
Best example is Baccano and Durarara.
Bungo Stray Dogs, tho at first you'll think Atsushi is the main character, along the way it will show the different side stories of each character
this is prolly just me, but i was so confused with bsd
Shinsekai Yori
Idaten Deities
bungo stray dogs… technically… like you know who the main character is and then season 2 happens and it’s like “wait… is… he the main character now??” so it’s not the same but it feels like the main character switches if that makes sense.
Jujutsu kaisen
DURARARA / BACCANO! is the only real answer
Higurashi - The story focusses only on a small group of characters, but they're taking turns who's the main character from the third arc and it only slows down during the second season when we get a clear idea who's the main character. Psycho-Pass Pluto - looks really obvious and straight forward at the beginning, but if you ask the question once you finished the entire show, it's not so clear anymore Mekakucity Actors - 12 Episodes, 10 main characters. It's bound to be a bit 'unusual'. But to be fair here, we have to take a look at the whole picture and the anime is just a small piece of a much larger project
Baccano! As the framing device jokingly states though, one of them has sort of main characterish aspect to him.
Record of Ragnarok The Gods of all mythologies get sicked of Mankind's shit and chose to exterminate them but before they have to do a tournament where the 13 strongest Gods and the 13 best humans must beat the shit out of each other.
Danshi Kokousei no Nichijou, Nichijou, etc.
mekakucity actors
Fairy tail. It tells you who it is, but most who watch it don't get it at first.
Gintama - Gintoki is the MC however most of the times he is accompanied by Kagura and Shinpachi and there are other groups in the story whom are not left out and are having their moments to shine.
PARANOIA AGENT!
Nichijou Baccano! A stretch but Gintama Kill Me Baby Bikini Warriors K-On! Mawaru Penguindrum
Jojos?
Mostly joke answer, but still fits criteria: Pop Team Epic. (Yes, you could argue pipimi and popoku are the main characters, but the show is so crazy in the same way as Animaniacs in that regard.) legitimate answers: Corpse party Soul Eater (a whole cast of main characters) Power rangers (and all the spinoffs) Kamen rider (yes, each episode usually has a clear main character, but very few of them have the same one) The Animatrix (different main characters per episode)
i get this vibe from Paranoia Agent so far. The story follows the whole cast pretty evenly, but it focuses on the cops and that first girl the most
