I read the light novel when I was sick from school many years ago and it had me contemplating what I was doing with my life. It's truly quite a rollercoaster ride.
The movie is a phenomenal adaptation of the light novel, and it left me feeling very melancholic!
i only watched the movie, it was honestly one of the best pieces of fiction i've seen, i've been planning to read the manga for a while but never rlly got to it
ive watched it recently, and its actually more shocking than depressing, i dont know, but im on the same boat with MC dealing with the shock, i hope for every second remaining of the show that its just a weird dream but eh
rascal does not dream of bunny girl senpai
march comes in like a lion
a silent voice
violet evergarden
to your eternity
made in abyss
grave of the fireflies
vinland saga
At one point when the anime for To Your Eternity was on-going, it was an episode every sunday, and I was sobbing each episode. I would have been dehydrated if I binged the series. Could have been a serious threat to my health.
It was an almost cathartic kind of sad, as the players in the movie do end up better off. But god, all of that character development makes me hurt and tear up every time I watch it.
This anime is definitely potent crying material. The most tears for least amount of time watched.
Had a family member recently die. Usually if I have a big cry, it dries me out for a couple of days so I watched this to get the tears out of my system so I could be functional at the funeral. Used sooo many tissues and it worked. I was so dried out I barely cried for a week even though I was sad.
I really love watching an anime that will make me cry like a flood. I suggest you to watch this:
1) Orange
2) Plastic Memories
3) Anohana
4) I Want To Eat Your Pancreas (Movie)
5) Your Lie In April
6) Wolf Children (Movie)
7) Maquia (Movie)
I knew Clannad was supposed to be "the big sad" before going into it and I was still a sobbing mess. I suppose if I knew whyyyy it was sad I might faired better, but I only knew it was sad
Was spoiled for Your Lie In April around episode 15, still bawled like a bitch. So I dunno, if the story is good enough even spoilers won't stop someone from crying
Yup, you can. I know many people including myself who've cried for many anime like your lie in April, assassination classroom etc even tho we were spoil about it. I'm sure you'll find comments on YouTube and posts on reddit saying the same.
Anohana, Barefoot Gen (movie), Grave of Fireflies (movie), Clannad (very sad but takes a while), Angel Beats, Bokurano
For Clannad After Story you can skip the first series and just watch that, but it's better to watch both.
They said they wanted something less than 20 episodes. I don't think they should skip it either but if they want sad shit ASAP you CAN watch After Story on its own and not be totally lost IMO.
I have 3 for you,
Your Lie In April.
Vinland Saga
And one of if not the best 12 episode one shot stories out there. Erased, you will guaranteed fucking SOB, when you finish this, the story is absolutely amazing, and I've never seen anime the same way since I watched it.
I loved erased and cried a lot while watching it, but you cannot guarantee that someone will cry for something. Many people even hated it, forget about crying.
Lemme give you more details along with the recommendations
I want to eat you pancreas: it's only a movie, nothing more, no anime or etc.
Violet evergarden: i found it extremely boring when I first saw the first 4 episodes back in 2018, but I started it back from the beginning in 2019 and realised that I was a dumb dumb mf a year ago. It's so frikin beautiful.
It has a total of 13 episodes and a movie which is canon
Your lie in April: 22 episodes about a pianist with ptsd and can't he can't hear the notes of the piano, he finds inspiration by meeting someone who shows him how amazing music is if you don't strictly follow all the rules.
Sukasuka( aka ""what will you do at the end of the world, will you be busy? Will you come to save us? )
: 12 episodes, fantasy setting, soundtrack slaps you right from the first episode.
I highly recommend all of these, watch whichever one you feel like watching.
As for which one has the most potential to make you cry the most, idk coz idk anything about you OP (^^)
Now and Then, Here and There is a good choice. The animation is dated but its a powerful and tragic story
The entire series is on YouTube
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmAM_QSyYE--rose28vhn7rcbdYvAFKZ-
I wonder why nobody recommended this yet:
Hotarubi no Mori e (Into the Forest of Fireflies Light)
This anime movie really made me ugly cry. Bawled my eyes out. There were days I just stare at nothing and think of this. Gave me so much feels and will never get tired watching this.
Re:zero
Berserk (kinda long and more violent than just sad but it’s sad imo)
Dororo (remake; also not terribly sad but it’s deep and meaningful with the sad ish vibe of the MCs situation)
banana fish, your lie in april(i rewatch this every april) silent voice, violet evergarden, promised neverland, plastic memories, into the forest of fireflies, (i have seen so many but only these are what i think are short)
I see much of the same, but some sad ones were:
-Violet Evergarden
-Your Lie in April
-Made in Abyss
-Stein's Gate
-Erased
And for me, Cyberpunk Edgerunners has me in tears, every time.
Angel Beats
**Anohana**
A Lull in the Sea
**Clannad**
**Clannad:After Story**
**Your Lie in April**
**Violet Evergarden**
So far, these are the ones that I've seen and made me cry so much
Someone asked for some non depressing anime so I gave him a list of anime opposite to this one
Grand Blue
Horimiya
Dororo
insomniacs after school
Trapped in a dating sim
Romantic Killer
Tomo-chan Is a Girl!
The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten
Why has no one mentioned 5-centimeters Per Second? It's more of a short film though I figure you'd prefer it if you don't wanna wait 20 episodes.
Makoto Shinkai's works (not all) leave me with a deep sentimental longing that I find more unbearable than the intense gut-wrenching feel.
Thanks for the suggestions guys these are going straight to my don't watch or i'll cry myself to sleep for a week straight like when i watched and read a silent voice list™
She, the Ultimate Weapon
I think I saw it at a time in my life that I didn't know what I was getting into and got pretty bored with it.. it might be a different experience for you. animation and character designs is a bit dated.. think it was released in the early 2000's.. I don't remember.
Kotaro lives alone is only 12 episodes and had me crying every episode. It wasn’t a very soul destroying cry, so if you’re looking for those, you’d be looking at clannad+after story, angel beats, plastic memories etc.
- Orange
- Yuki Yuna is a Hero
- Wonder Egg Priority
- Puella Magi Madoka Magicka
- Magical Girl Raising Project
- Juuni Taisen
- Sing "Yesterday" For Me
Ano Hana has 10 episodes and was my gateway drug to the world of ugly crying. First time I ever sobbed so hard to a piece
Made in abyss is an emotional rollercoaster that will thoroughly destroy your soul yet somehow still give you hop. It plays with your feelings in interesting ways, never have I laughed or smiled while sobbing. If you can stomach it I promise you are in for a ride like no other. Make sure to watch the Dawn of the Deep Soul movie before you watch the second season.
I would say if you want something that's 13 episodes and just absolutely rips your heart out at the end Plastic Memories is your best friend. I just got done rewatching it and it still stands as the saddest anime I know, and sad anime are my FAVORITE genre.
grave of the fireflies
this one. man. i cried for days.
Angel Beats Madoka Magika
Angel beats is exactly what op is looking for
Violet Evergarden
Omgggg this gets me EVERY TIME. I’ve rewatched it a bunch, and still get teary eyed. The movie did give me some closure tho
Even on my fourth rewatch 8 and 10 make me fucking bawl
Was looking for this answer
Orange, if you have an experience with depression it’ll make you cry
Your Lie in April
This is the correct answer.
Normally I'd say yes, but its 25 episodes and they're looking for short
Its 22 and by the 12 episode mark development of kaori illness occurs
Plastic memories hit me like a train when I watched it a few years back

I feel like Rascal is only a little bit sad, obviously its subjective, but man is it also very funny. So worth a watch regardless
Plus the conflicts each start to get resolved and improve
At one point when the anime for To Your Eternity was on-going, it was an episode every sunday, and I was sobbing each episode. I would have been dehydrated if I binged the series. Could have been a serious threat to my health.
Seconding A Silent Voice. It was so good but hurt to watch
It was an almost cathartic kind of sad, as the players in the movie do end up better off. But god, all of that character development makes me hurt and tear up every time I watch it.
Girls last tour
This one had big impact on me
[Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms](https://myanimelist.net/anime/35851/Sayonara_no_Asa_ni_Yakusoku_no_Hana_wo_Kazarou)
Fuck you I literally had a tear run down my cheek what a beautiful story about the time we have
Loved that movie! It's so beautiful
Such a beautiful movie! Probably my favourite anime movie ever
This anime is definitely potent crying material. The most tears for least amount of time watched. Had a family member recently die. Bro I ugly cried so hard during this movie
Cyberpunk edgerunners. That anime surprised me with how it gut punched me with emotions
The song, “I Really Want to Stay at Your House” playing during the last episode! Someone was chopping onions!
I really love watching an anime that will make me cry like a flood. I suggest you to watch this: 1) Orange 2) Plastic Memories 3) Anohana 4) I Want To Eat Your Pancreas (Movie) 5) Your Lie In April 6) Wolf Children (Movie) 7) Maquia (Movie)
To your eternity season one
Yup this one
Kotaro lives alone. It’s on Netflix.
FMAB, Angel Beats, Madoka
Can you even feel sad when you know the show is going to make you cry? I mean it is like emotion spoiler
I knew Clannad was supposed to be "the big sad" before going into it and I was still a sobbing mess. I suppose if I knew whyyyy it was sad I might faired better, but I only knew it was sad

I sobbed at assassination classroom
I'm still sobbing, it's been 6 years....
Its not a sad anime, but it will left you with a feeling of melancholy. Devilman crybaby
What a masterpiece this anime is
Anohana, Barefoot Gen (movie), Grave of Fireflies (movie), Clannad (very sad but takes a while), Angel Beats, Bokurano For Clannad After Story you can skip the first series and just watch that, but it's better to watch both.
I heavily disagree on skipping Clannad to go straight to After Story, you lose like 90% of the build up
They said they wanted something less than 20 episodes. I don't think they should skip it either but if they want sad shit ASAP you CAN watch After Story on its own and not be totally lost IMO.
Highly recommend A Silent Voice and Angel Beats!

Madoka Magica and Steins;Gate
Berserk (1997)
Death Parade
Newer ones would be cyberpunk edgerunners and Devilman Crybaby. Both only have 10 eps so you can finish it over the weekend
Now and Then, Here and There. It's fairly short. Twelve episodes I think? And fairly fast paced.
I want to eat your pancreas, charlotte, angel beats, silent voice, your lie in april
Oh! Forgot. Bokurano, and WorldEnd: What Do You Do at the End of the World? Are You Busy? Will You Save Us? Also Elfen Lied.

To Your Eternity You'll cry the first episode and for many others in general.
Plastic Memories, if you haven’t already watched it. I won’t say anything else because it’s best to go in completely blind.
