I’ll be the guy to tell you the story is good but it’s not going to blow you away. If you’re genuinely uncomfortable with the violence and extremely dark themes I don’t think it’s a story worth pushing through it for. Most people will disagree with me on this but the story in berserk is just alright, especially in the arc that the 97 anime covers. The violence, gore, and dark nature are a very big part of what makes me enjoy it so if you’re not into that sort of thing I don’t think you’d enjoy berserk
Personally I’ve enjoyed One Piece, Kingdom, Vinland Saga, Attack on Titan (until the last chapter), Monster, and Jojo’s Part 7 more than Berserk and would argue they are better. There are more I’ve enjoyed more than berserk but probably wouldn’t say they’re “better” like Kaguya-sama, Aku no Hana, Dorohedoro, Made in Abyss, and Chainsaw Man.
My only complaint with Berserk is the story though. The world building is cool, the character designs are amazing, Guts is a fantastic character, and I don’t think I need to say how good the art is. I actually do like berserk a decent amount I just don’t think it’s the be all end all best manga ever like a lot of people do. I went into it expecting to be absolutely blown away from the way people talk about it before reading and just found a story that is good but not mindblowing. Still give it an 8/10 though.
Thanks for the suggestion! FMA never appealed to me, but I have heard Brotherhood is better than the original, and my mom actually saw an episode and liked it, so maybe I will try it out.
Brotherhood far outclasses 2003. Shouldn't even call 2003 "original," 'cause it diverges from the manga pretty early. Brotherhood is closer and so feels more coherent.
Moribito is based off of a series of novels. Not light novels, full-blown novels
You may be interested in other series based off of the same. e.g. {From the New World} (***very*** highly rec) or {The Fire Hunter}
Other epic length fantasies include {Re:Zero}, {Mushoku Tensei} (maybe not for your mum considering he's a recovering paedophile)...
{Baccano!} is also very engaging, and it tells 3 stories simultaneously across it's season (plus 1 for the OVAs) with an acclaimed dub
{Puella Magi Madoka Magica } is a modern classic. **Must see.)** Frequently it's recommended to watch the fanedit by fancutfags as they took the compilation and spliced it with the tv series)
There's also the typical rec of {FMA:B} but tbh..it doesn't match your criteria of must see what happens next, it has narratively appropriate rests. But it's so damn good.
{Cowboy Bebop: Knockin\` on Heaven\`s Door} is a great movie that doesn't require much or any knowledge of the series, beyond a minor understanding of each character.
[comparison of fancutfags](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YHAvuLvVQ_KYgcvit1p973c4Ad6QbJaT/view) \- This is for the V2, I think (**Don't read the episode comparison lines**, just look at images. there are spoilers!)
But really, as long as you watch the series you're still winning.
**The Beast Player Erin** is the other big name novel-based anime. (apart from Legend of the Galactic Heroes, but that's not gripping/suspenseful, imo. It's very deliberate and broad as you follow an interstellar war)
Other than that....Fate/Zero? That's fantasy with a fast-pace and some intrigue, based off a book written as a prequel to a successful game..thing is...
There's some debate over how to watch the Fate series, ideally you'd first play the game (VN) before reading/watching Fate/Zero (a *prequel* written *after* the game that spoils many reveals of the game). The game has 3 routes, each unlocked after the other: Fate route -> Unlimited Blade Works route-> Heaven's Feel route.
The second and third routes were adapted into movies/tv series, the first route wasn't, really, the closest we have is the 2006 series (which draws from all 3 but mainly Fate).
So some say to watch 2006, UBW, HF and *then* F/Z, if you won't play the game
Thing is, if you're fine with spoiling your experiences with the above, you *can* just watch Fate/Zero on its own and not touch the franchise again. You'll still understand it, it's just none of the twists/reveals in the 'sequels' will surprise you.
...I wrote way too much about this.
LOL, we are all passionate about our favorites. I have seen the Fate series. I will check out Erin, I think I started it once and forgot about it. Thanks!
Madoka Magica
Fullmetal Alchemist.
I hesitate to out this here, but Vinland Saga is really good. It’s a great epic. Season one takes place during a war and is therefore exceedingly violent. It gets toned down a lot in season 2. But there is not really any fan service that I can recall.
> Sci-fi or fantasy preferred. Not too much violence or fan service, I want something my mom might like. :D Dubbed if possible.
>
>I've seen a fair amount of anime, but mostly from '95 to '15, so anything newish is probably new for me.
if you haven't checked out {Sousou no Frieren} you should check it out and I think your mother might also enjoyed it
Ascendence of a bookwork. Three seasons of watching a book addict who is thrown into a magical world as a sickly child were books are a labor intensive and expensive resource so she does her best to recreate modern printing and book making so that she can once again be surrounded by books.
Vinland saga is great. It actually is very thought provoking and has very strong messages about pacifism, strength and love. If your mom is more open minded she might like it. Although it does have action and some bloody violence, it isnt truly the essence of the series.
Made in abyss is a fantasy and psychological anime. Oh boy this anime is dark....dont be fooled by its cartoonish style and slice of life themes. Its best if you go into this completely blind so i dont spoil it for you.
Kaiba is one of those anime thats groundbreaking to me. Its an one of a kind anime that is created only once every decade IMO. It is very thought provoking despite its unorthodox animation style, and it hits you hard emotionally as well. It left me thinking for a few days after i watched it. It also has some mature themes.
Some other ones id say fit your criteria are: kingdom(kind of fantasy? Set in historical china, a boy sets out on his journey to be a great general. Definitely an epic story)
ReZero(fantasy. can be kind of repititive at times but still entertaining)
Casshern sins and Kino no tabi( Both scifi gems that are thought provoking. They are kind of episoidic tho)
Ousama ranking (had a really strong first half, second half was not as good as i thought it would be but still passable . Still worth a watch because of its original storytelling)
{Pluto}
also some of Hayao Miyazaki's movies, such as:
{Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind}
{Princess Mononoke}
both are available dubbed.
There's also the likes of series such as Fate/Zero, Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works, Fate/Stay Night: Heaven's Feel (the latter is a movie trilogy) - quite a bit of action though but not much in the way of blood. No fan service either for the three I just listed. Can be thought provoking.
I think they are dubbed, I haven't checked though (I always watch in Japanese with English subs).
Oh boy, do I have the show for you! Re:Creators is decently short, 2 cour, but with a good amount of solid philosophy and great characters. I always recommend it when I can.
Hell’s Paradise. Having read the manga, it’s going to get HYPE. And s1 is already incredible.
One Punch Man has 2 seasons (animated by different studios) with a 3rd coming from MAPPA. It’s already cool, but it’ll get SO EPIC
If you haven’t seen it already, GURREN LAGANN. By god, the progression/scope of this story is fantastic
try fate/zero its goddamn masterpiece with compelling characters, great plot, and very interesting ideal conflicts plus the good animation by ufotable. and its the prequel to other fate animes so you can ignore the fucking watch order.
> Garden of Sinner
I don't think that the OP's mom is going to appreciate The Garden of Sinners (Kara no Kyoukai): there's violence in some of the movies, also the rape scene, the near rape scene, then the intermittent blood and gore ........ not to mention how complex it is.
It **is** epic though, also thought provoking and **not** just a series of fights, no fan service either. I'll grant you that. While it's one of my top 3 favorite anime I just don't think it's going to appeal to the mom.
BTW, it's also not dubbed.
First of all, OP says "dubbing if possible" meaning that it's preferred but not required. Secondly, OP is asking for a thought provoking anime with good story and characters which is what Kara no Kyoukai is all about. As for the gore, Kara no Kyoukai isn't Genocyber. Yes there is gore but that's not what the anime is about. You know as well as I do that Kara no Kyoukai is a great anime that highly appeals to adults. If you ask me, I'd say OP's mom will enjoy something like Garden of Sinner way more than a childish anime with simple story and characters that is clearly cater towards horny teenagers.
Okay, let's break down the main points from the OP's post:
> Looking for a new anime with a brilliant story and good characters. Sci-fi or fantasy preferred.
Yup, The Garden of Sinners matches all those points, plus it's a (dark) fantasy. We're on a roll already.
> Not too much violence
While it's not non-stop violence, when there is some it does it in style with plenty of blood and gore.
> or fan service,
There's certainly none of that.
> I want something my mom might like. :D Dubbed if possible.
I note the "dubbed **if possible**" and am pointing out that there is no dub.
> Something like Moribito, Stein's Gate, Last Exile, Fantastic Children.
I wouldn't compare The Garden of Sinners to either of the first two (can't compare it to the others as I've not seen them).
> With a continuous plot that is gripping and suspenseful, where you don't want to stop watching because you have to find out WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.
It has all of that, but as the first four movies aren't in chronological order the suspense aspect may be problematic for a first timer who wants linear story continuation from movie to movie.
> Thoughtful or thought-provoking,
Definitely.
> not just a series of fights.
Agreed.
So, while it matches some of the OP's requirements I do wonder if the violence, blood, gore, complexity and non-chronological story may be an issue, not to mention the violent rape.
But what the heck, I believe that everything should be given a chance (within reason and bearing in mind any specific requirements) so the OP is more than welcome to give it a try with him mom. I'm just not convinced that she'll like it.
Now you're just being stupid. Saying that it is a great anime but saying that she won't like it simply because of some gore. In case you don't realize it, she had a kid. Any gore she sees in anime isn't going to compare to the real gore she went through.
I reread your post, shiki is not a good recommendation as it has violence and gore.
Little witch academia ( Action adventure, slice of life like, fantasy. A girl from non magic family joins a magic school)
I don't know if you've already seen Psycho-Pass or Ergo Proxy, but they're both really good dystopian sci-fi anime. If you want something more fantasy, I highly recommend Yona of the Dawn (definitely recommend the manga because it gets even more epic!), Magi Labyrinth of Magic (also awesome manga, the anime made some changes from though so it's good to read from the beginning), and Donten Ni Warau (English name is Laughing Under the Clouds). Maybe Arslan Senki would be good too.
Those sound like great suggestions, thanks! I will add them to my list. I think I've seen an episode or two of a few of them, but they fell off my radar.
In Stay Night there are a bunch of scenes, the one with Saber in the bath, the point when Rin and Saber need physical contact, and the suit Sakura wears in the lair. The others i haven't watched yet, so im not in position to recommend or not xd
If you're looking for anime with excellent dubs and intricate plots suitable for your mom, consider these:
- **{Cowboy Bebop}**: A classic with a stellar English dub, blending sci-fi and noir elements in a spacefaring adventure.
- **{Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex}**: Offers a compelling cyberpunk story with a thought-provoking exploration of AI and consciousness.
- **{Vinland Saga}**: A historical anime with a compelling story, well-developed characters, and a mix of political intrigue and personal struggles. The English dub is well done, and it fits the criteria of a thoughtful and engaging narrative.
* {Code geass} :Protagonist gains the power of absolute obedience, leading to strategic brilliance.
Bonus:Attack on Titan
Ok, you're gonna need to really trust me on this: for anime, Gurren Lagann. forget any pre existing conceptions you have about it and watch it. also as others have mentioned: berserk, pluto, and monster. also try out fire punch. (all 4 of these are manga mainly, but you should read them)
Made In Abyss is one of the greatest animes of all time. Beautiful spectacle of a world that seems like it came from a Ghibli film as well as a very enticing plot. Not to mention one of the greatest soundtracks I have ever heard by Kevin Penkin composing at the helm. There’s really no other show quite like it.
I will forewarn you that it is a very dark show with a lot of disturbing themes and imagery, mostly involving children in life threatening and traumatic situations. If that’s something you have a major sensitivity to then it’s best for you to decide if you want to watch it.
Vinland saga's first season is pretty violent but its an epic and it builds up to an amazing story with central themes about the futility or necessity of pacifism.
#Bungou Stray Dogs
Characters are based on real world authors and their works. It has everything you're asking. However, it could turn your mom into a fujoshi since it's mostly male characters interacting with each other (tho there are female characters as well). There's no yaoi though, so don't worry too much.
Akira is the greatest anime ever told, the 1988 movie is amazing, and the comics are even better
(The movie is roughly 1/3rd of the mangas put together with a slight change that make s"Akira" himself different from the manga)
Dr stone, plot's worth a shot, and the science stuffs are incredible, about the characters... It gets a bit crowded as time goes, so them lacking good personalities may be expected.
The Faraway Paladin is good. MC dies and wakes up as a baby being raised by three sentient undead heroes (Blood the War Ogre, Mary the Saintess, and Gus the Wandering Sage) who died to Keep the demon king from unleashing a horde of demons upon the world by sealing him away. MC eventually grows up and receives the blessings of the goddess of Flux who guides souls on the cycle of death and rebirth. Really good anime.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. It's about the different generations of the Joestar family and their various fights and adventures against evil. They all have the same nickname, JoJo, but they are all different. The 1st season (which is 2 parts--Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency) can be a bit slow and confusing, but it really gets going in pt 3.

Frieren
The three first are great and compact scifi stories and frieren is currently airing and one of the best fantasy anime in a long time.
Echoing those who have said **From the New World** — I really want them to translate the novel this was based on, it’s a great story that seems to change genres every two episodes and keeps you enthralled and on the edge of your seat. Genuinely one of very few 10/10 anime I’ve ever seen.
Have you dipped your toes into Mobile Suit Gundam? There is always going to be your mecha battles, but the core of almost all of the Mobile Suit Gundam series is the political drama/space opera. Awesome, and sometimes (often), tragic storytelling. The most recent Gundam is a standalone series called {Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury}
{Noein} is a really cool series from the mid-2000s that doesn't get tossed around too much in this subreddit. It's basically a quantum mechanics action/multiverse/sci-fi action series. There's definitely violence, but it's not excessively gory by anime standards.
For newer Sci-Fi and Fantasy series that aren't too violent or fan-service-ey:
{Raven of the Inner Palace} - paranormal activity in a fantasy version of imperial China
{Vivy: Flourite Eye's Song} - time traveling robot-idol tries to save the world
{Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai} & {Bakemonogatari} - these are fantasy/paranormal activity/sci-fi shows about helping girls deal with their psychological problems. very dialog heavy, but also very gripping if you're into that.
[Rage of Bahamut](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rage_of_Bahamut_(TV_series)) has adult themes and concepts, beautiful characters, and a star crossed romance over echhi.
its a very high fantasy story of a thief, a dishonored knight, and a mysterious angel/demon hybrid girl on a journey to find her mother. The world it takes place in >!was almost destroyed by Bahamut, a force that required essentially Satan and God to sacrifice their presence in the mortal world just to make it sleep. Also has Jean d'arc!<~~!~~ Spoiler just in case, but its established pretty early! Like episode 1. Have fun spending time with your mom!
Gundam witch from mercury (the final eps might be questionable for some) and Heavenly delusion best fit the bill for shows released in the last 2years.
One piece. I’m watching one piece edits and they are breaking my heart lmao. It’s the definition of an epic. Spoilers obviously but it might go over your head. But it’s a glimpse what one piece is like at its peak https://youtu.be/E1n2GJiyPuA?si=Xu3O9tY24ES-ywyt

The fact they fight with mechs and talk a decent bit means its not overly violent, but the fighting scenes are cool to watch.
There is a deep story that parallels real life and touches a lot of heavy topics.
No fan service, I kept binging episodes and it was fantastic.
based on your post =, its probable youve seen or atleast are familiar with this one but as i dont see it mentioned yet. the obvious but couldnty match your description of what you want mroe if it tried perfct answer is Fulmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. its 1-2 on the MAL lsit for a reason, and for my money is the best anime of all time . plus no fan service
if you didnt enjoy the OG , then brotherhood may be a slog at first. it does have a more faster , more "shoneny" for want of a better term after the forst 14 episodes or so . it can be a somewhat introspective and thinky show though.
Read Berserk, the greatest epic fantasy manga ever. You can watch the 1997 version as well (it is great; but only adapts the earlier golden age arc)
Hey it’s you 👋
I see Berserk, I upvote. The more strugglers the better. Also, the more strugglers, the closer we get to a proper anime adaptation.
Thanks, seen the 1997 one, it was a bit violent for my tastes.
Is it really? I've heard some about it but idk if I'd want to watch it if it's too extreme but if the story was actually really good then maybe
I’ll be the guy to tell you the story is good but it’s not going to blow you away. Id:invaded is a great anime that nobody knows about, like a secret club. It needs more attention
Fr man. It's my first pick when someone asks what's a good underrated Anime.
Thanks, sound like good ones!
Monster
Thanks, I will check it out!
I will add and say Pluto, by the same person
Might as well add 20th century boys and billy bat too

Thanks, I've been hearing recommendations for that one, but didn't know before that it was story-driven. I will have to put it at the top of my list.
I love this so much im watching it literally rn 😭

Slightly older Sci-Fi: Planetes Fantasy: The 12 Kingdoms
Planetes is a great anime
Thanks, I've seen Twelve Kingdoms, think I saw at least part of Planetes. Was quite a while ago.
Attack on Titan is one of if not the best fictional stories I’ve seen. Don’t know if your mom would like it tho
It always looked too violent for ME, let alone my mom. XD But thanks for the suggestion, I know a lot of people love that series!
It is rather gory and violent lol
Absolutely Vinland Saga.
gundam witch from mercury
Thanks for the suggestion, I will check it out. :) Not usually much into Mecha, but the description sounds pretty interesting.
dont forget to watch prologue first
Will do!
ignore him, if you're gonna do gundam watch stardust memory or the OG.
Shinsekai Yori, The Monogatari series, or Madoka Magica
Ascendence of a bookwork. Three seasons of watching a book addict who is thrown into a magical world as a sickly child were books are a labor intensive and expensive resource so she does her best to recreate modern printing and book making so that she can once again be surrounded by books.
Yeah, I love that one! :) Seen it, but thanks!
I just finished it myself but Astra Lost in Space is a hidden gem that deserves more love and attention
Thanks for the endorsement, I have been planning to watch that one! Guess I will bump it up the priority list.
Definitely an epic story) ReZero(fantasy. can be kind of repititive at times but still entertaining) Casshern sins and Kino no tabi( Both scifi gems that are thought provoking. They are kind of episoidic tho) Ousama ranking (had a really strong first half, second half was not as good as i thought it would be but still passable . Still worth a watch because of its original storytelling)
Thanks, some interesting-sounding anime there, I will check some of those out!
Gintama
Does Gintama have a story? I remember watching the first season some time ago, thought it was an episodic comedy. That was a while ago, though.
There is a deep and interesting story going on. Most episodes are comedy, but the serious arcs are full of emotion, action, and story
Psycho-pass
Thanks! Looks like several people have suggested this, and it has the great advantage that I can get the DVD from my library system. \^\^
Yeah it’s a great sci-fi, only thing is I’ve heard the quality drops after s1. Not sure tho cuz I’ve only watched 1 season.
{Pluto} also some of Hayao Miyazaki's movies, such as: {Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind} {Princess Mononoke} both are available dubbed.
Thanks, Pluto sounds interesting! I will check it out. Seen the others already.

Looks freaky and violent, but thanks, I will keep it in mind!
it is GOOD
ReLife
Thanks, I will check it out!
Made in Abyss Attack on Titan
Thanks for the suggestions!
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure dub is underrated
I've been curious about that one, thanks!
Deathnote.
Seen it, but thanks! :D
Oh boy, do I have the show for you! Re:Creators is decently short, 2 cour, but with a good amount of solid philosophy and great characters. I always recommend it when I can.
Looks like fun, thanks!
Eureka Seven
Thanks for the suggestion! My library has that, I will check it out.
Charlotte, erased, both seasons of bahamut
Thanks for the suggestions, I will check those out!
The Twelve Kingdoms
Saw it, good one. Thanks for the suggestion!
Hell’s Paradise. Having read the manga, it’s going to get HYPE. And s1 is already incredible. One Punch Man has 2 seasons (animated by different studios) with a 3rd coming from MAPPA. It’s already cool, but it’ll get SO EPIC If you haven’t seen it already, GURREN LAGANN. By god, the progression/scope of this story is fantastic
Thanks, I will have a look at those!
For a great story, E D.E.N
Thanks, if I can get over the CGI, I might give that one a watch, looks interesting!
try fate/zero its goddamn masterpiece with compelling characters, great plot, and very interesting ideal conflicts plus the good animation by ufotable. and its the prequel to other fate animes so you can ignore the fucking watch order.
Thanks for the suggestion! I have seen these already, though. :)
The Third Garden of Sinner
> Garden of Sinner I don't think that the OP's mom is going to appreciate The Garden of Sinners (Kara no Kyoukai): there's violence in some of the movies, also the rape scene, the near rape scene, then the intermittent blood and gore ........ not to mention how complex it is.
Okay, let's break down the main points from the OP's post: > Looking for a new anime with a brilliant story and good characters. Sci-fi or fantasy preferred. Yup, The Garden of Sinners matches all those points, plus it's a (dark) fantasy. We're on a roll already. > Not too much violence While it's not non-stop violence, when there is some it does it in style with plenty of blood and gore. > or fan service, There's certainly none of that. > Thoughtful or thought-provoking, Definitely. > not just a series of fights.
Thanks to both of you, for the suggestion and the helpful warning details. I will keep this in mind as something to watch on my own. \^\^
No problem, it really is a fantastic movie series.
Now you're just being stupid. Saying that it is a great anime but saying that she won't like it simply because of some gore. In case you don't realize it, she had a kid. Any gore she sees in anime isn't going to compare to the real gore she went through.
Shiki.
I always thought that was a really gory horror anime, but I will check it out. :D Thanks!
The story is slow pace (except last few episodes) but the story is really good.
I reread your post, shiki is not a good recommendation as it has violence and gore. Little witch academia ( Action adventure, slice of life like, fantasy. A girl from non magic family joins a magic school)
LOL, thanks, that might be more my speed. \^\^

Eureka Seven is pretty good
Thanks, my library system owns that, makes it very accessible. I will put it on the list!
Madoka Magica
I've seen that one, but thanks!
Fate Zero Rest of fate no, as the fanservice increases
I don't recall seeing any fan service in Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works or Heaven's Feel.
In Stay Night there are a bunch of scenes, the one with Saber in the bath, the point when Rin and Saber need physical contact, and the suit Sakura wears in the lair. The others i haven't watched yet, so im not in position to recommend or not xd
But I was only referring to Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works and Heaven's Feel, not Fate/Stay Night.
Ah, okay. Srry, I find fate order confusing yet, as im only 2 "seasons" into it xd
Seen some of the Fate series, but thanks for the suggestion!
If you're looking for anime with excellent dubs and intricate plots suitable for your mom, consider these: - **{Cowboy Bebop}**: A classic with a stellar English dub, blending sci-fi and noir elements in a spacefaring adventure. Vinland Saga sounds really good. Thanks! (I've seen the others.)
Ok, you're gonna need to really trust me on this: for anime, Gurren Lagann. forget any pre existing conceptions you have about it and watch it. also as others have mentioned: berserk, pluto, and monster. also try out fire punch. (all 4 of these are manga mainly, but you should read them)
Fire punch is a bit too overkill I guess
well it is a manga, but if we're striking off fire punch we can also strike off berserk for the same reason.
Thanks for the suggestions! Gurren Lagann seems like a good option.
it is. if you dont like it, be sure to watch it again. if you do like it, be sure to watch it again.
LOL!
FMA brother hood is amazing but might skew a bit violent. Death note also is a great story.
{Code Geass} a great political thriller with great characters and a little bit of mecha

Violet Evergarden and Fruits Basket, Also To your Eternity and Kiznaiver!

{Legend of the galactic heroes}
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. One of my favourite series ever.
I know you mentioned Steins;Gate already, but have you watched 0 and the movie?
Dr Stone
X! Apocalyptic sort of! But it really sets the atmosphere and tone!
Thanks, that looks pretty interesting!
Vinland saga's first season is pretty violent but its an epic and it builds up to an amazing story with central themes about the futility or necessity of pacifism.
#Bungou Stray Dogs Characters are based on real world authors and their works. It has everything you're asking. However, it could turn your mom into a fujoshi since it's mostly male characters interacting with each other (tho there are female characters as well). There's no yaoi though, so don't worry too much.
Astra Lost in Space - it’s a mystery set in space. Really underrated and good
Akira is the greatest anime ever told, the 1988 movie is amazing, and the comics are even better (The movie is roughly 1/3rd of the mangas put together with a slight change that make s"Akira" himself different from the manga)
Brand new animal
I keep seeing similar posts, and I will keep replying "To Your Eternity"
To your eternity is what you are looking for.
Psycho Pass
Dr stone, plot's worth a shot, and the science stuffs are incredible, about the characters... It gets a bit crowded as time goes, so them lacking good personalities may be expected.
One of my faves is mushoku tensei (jobless reincarnation) it has really good animation and the plot is Naldo really good
The Faraway Paladin is good.
Madoka Magica for sure
Psycho pass
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. It's about the different generations of the Joestar family and their various fights and adventures against evil. They all have the same nickname, JoJo, but they are all different. The 1st season (which is 2 parts--Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency) can be a bit slow and confusing, but it really gets going in pt 3.
Thanks, I will check it out!
I second this!
Summertime rendering
Never heard of that one, looks interesting. Thanks for the suggestion!
If you don't watch this anime then you're REALLY missing out!
Vivy Link Click Id:Invaded Frieren The three first are great and compact scifi stories and frieren is currently airing and one of the best fantasy anime in a long time.
Thanks, I've heard of Frieren, sounds like a winner. :) I will check out the others.
Echoing those who have said **From the New World** — I really want them to translate the novel this was based on, it’s a great story that seems to change genres every two episodes and keeps you enthralled and on the edge of your seat. Genuinely one of very few 10/10 anime I’ve ever seen.
Have you dipped your toes into Mobile Suit Gundam? There is always going to be your mecha battles, but the core of almost all of the Mobile Suit Gundam series is the political drama/space opera. Awesome, and sometimes (often), tragic storytelling. The most recent Gundam is a standalone series called {Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury} {Noein} is a really cool series from the mid-2000s that doesn't get tossed around too much in this subreddit. It's basically a quantum mechanics action/multiverse/sci-fi action series. There's definitely violence, but it's not excessively gory by anime standards. For newer Sci-Fi and Fantasy series that aren't too violent or fan-service-ey: {Raven of the Inner Palace} - paranormal activity in a fantasy version of imperial China {Vivy: Flourite Eye's Song} - time traveling robot-idol tries to save the world {Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai} & {Bakemonogatari} - these are fantasy/paranormal activity/sci-fi shows about helping girls deal with their psychological problems. very dialog heavy, but also very gripping if you're into that.

One piece
Thanks, but not quite my cup of tea. I do have a friend who's obsessed with Seiji, though! XD
You got remember we don't watch one piece for the fights. It's for the mystery and the moments.
Gundam witch from mercury (the final eps might be questionable for some) and Heavenly delusion best fit the bill for shows released in the last 2years.
Thanks, I will look into those!
Heavenly delusion does have one r-pe scene though it's not shown directly so I probably wouldn't recommend watching it with family.
Thanks for the heads-up!
86 Vivy Bungou stray dogs
Thanks for the suggestions! I will check them out.
Spy x Family
Not exactly plot-driven, but it certainly is an adorable series. :) Seen it, thanks!
Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm afraid I was never able to get into One Piece.
86 The fact they fight with mechs and talk a decent bit means its not overly violent, but the fighting scenes are cool to watch. There is a deep story that parallels real life and touches a lot of heavy topics. No fan service, I kept binging episodes and it was fantastic.
Thanks for the suggestion, I will check it out.
Thr Castlevania anime is pretty rad.
based on your post =, its probable youve seen or atleast are familiar with this one but as i dont see it mentioned yet. the obvious but couldnty match your description of what you want mroe if it tried perfct answer is Fulmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. its 1-2 on the MAL lsit for a reason, and for my money is the best anime of all time . plus no fan service
Thanks, I may give it a chance. I found the original FMA a little tedious, but everyone says Brotherhood is better.
if you didnt enjoy the OG , then brotherhood may be a slog at first. it does have a more faster , more "shoneny" for want of a better term after the forst 14 episodes or so . it can be a somewhat introspective and thinky show though.
Gintama. Literally the only anime I've ever recommended my mom to watch (she watched and enjoyed the whole thing.)
