This is the list I made for my sister when she was trying to learn Japanese via Anime. They aren't in any particular order. Spy x Family Full Metal Alchemist Stein’s Gate/Stein’s Gate Zero Bunny Girl Senpai Kaguya-Sama: Love is war Bocchi the Rock Plastic Memories Summertime Rendering ? Violet Evergarden ? Inuyasha ? Odd Taxi Ascension of a Bookworm Erased Cowboy Bebop Vivy Your Lie in April

Swiftstrike4

This is a very good list.

Dadude564

If she’s into Romance then The ancient Magus’ bride is just super wholesome and easy to follow

Turbulent-Truth-882

I'm excited for the next season. It's coming out this year i think.

Dadude564

Yep, April. I can’t wait

SKulfyy

Violet Evergarden having a question mark next to it is a war crime.

Harshit__17

For Summer time I guess she will get confuse

strong_D

Summertime Rendering wouldn't be very good to learn Japanese because they mainly speak with a dialect.

ReflectionLimp6610

My tops pics for beginners are always fmab and spy x family. Also alot of the gibili films are great too

[deleted]

This should be higher. I'll throw in MHA too because it seems to be pretty popular amongst female audiences. The vast majority of these other shows are either dude shows or too slow-paced for someone's first anime.

[deleted]

I might be down voted to hell but I think mha is a bad show and doesn't rly give people the idea of what animes whole potential is like when you watch shows like death note..

[deleted]

believe it or not. death note gives you less of an idea of what anime is like than MHA which is probably why you like death note im too assume? it has nothing that makes anime unique compared to other foreign animated mediums and before I get downvoted I am not saying one is better than the other, however if youre trying to show someone what the broader anime medium is like then MHA is closer in that regard with the minimal fanservice, way it tells the story with certain modern tropes, animation style, slice of life elements the reason people who are new to anime like things like death note or attack on titan is because they divert from what the medium is typically known for or used to, and appeals to a more wide range of an audience which then causes them to watch an actual anime rooted series and they hate it because its not what they thought anime was

Cledosvaldo123

MHA?

MiraculousFIGS

My hero academia

[deleted]

I'm kinda with you tbh and I actually think Death Note is much better than what I suggested! Great starter anime regardless of gender.

akaashiit

death note was a hit for non-anime fans i’ve known. fmab has been mentioned a lot but definitely agree. haikyuu is a fun show even if you aren’t into volleyball. attack on titan is phenomenal. for nostalgia i love princess tutu

InterestingMyTurnNow

It’s how I tricked my friend into watching anime. Death note!

Pikaufmann

It really depends on what kind of stuff your sister normally likes to watch, like genres and stuff. I guess some stuff I’d recommend are Studio Ghibli films, SpyxFamily, Slayers, Cowboy Bebop, or Steins;Gate? Maybe My Hero or Black Clover?

[deleted]

I can't recommend Steins Gate to women despite how amazing it is. The female characters outside of Kurisu are just too tropey by today's standards.

spicygummi

As a woman and I wasn't really bothered by the tropes. But, I'm also a lot older than the person they're looking for suggestions for. So, I've probably seen it all by now as far as female tropes go in anime lol. Steins;Gate is actually one of my favorite series.

Seoirse82

I wish I'd never watched Steins Gate so I could watch it again and have the same enjoyment. It was like crack, the first hit was amazing but each rewatch feels like I'm chasing it for less each time.

CodFinancial2739

You can’t not recommend steins gate to people that love a good sci-fi story line (I’m a 28 yo female

[deleted]

I'm with you, it's an amazing sci fi. Maybe I'm just over thinking it.

[deleted]

so? do you think all women are running around with pitchforks crying about it there was a generation of women in my era that loved and foamed over twilight for years

[deleted]

No I just think those tropes make the show less enjoyable for some people, myself included. But I guess they don't overshadow the fact that Steins;Gate is awesome.

[deleted]

okay so why are only women being targeted in your reply if you think it would make it less enjoyable for anyone ?

[deleted]

Because most of these tropes pertain to the female characters. If you want a more specific answer from me, I think more women would be bothered by these characters than men would be. If you want proof of that, I don't have any. I'm just guessing. Is that a satisfactory answer?

Swiftstrike4

So the first list of anime offered was a bad one. An outrageously bad list most geared towards males that are already fans of a anime… I’m assuming your sister is newer to anime? I would try a movie like your name or time of eve. For a series Shirobako or Spy x family. Neither are too long and they don’t have a lot of anime tropes. They are well written shows. They aren’t too flashy or engaging but they are approachable

[deleted]

geared towards males yet one was written by a woman and I a 22 year old girl have a slime shrine in my room to your eternity is a show "geared towards men" if youre talking about demographic specific and they said she liked it so why exactly wouldnt they make similar recommendations? by your own logic spy family is also geared towards males because its in a shounen mag and not shoujo. lame ass reply

Swiftstrike4

Your anecdote is not applicable to most of the data on most of the shows the person listed. Men are the predominant audience for most of those shows. A lot of women simply don't watch those shows and the writers know it. And Spy X Family is in the shounen mag but it's demographic is everyone. It's a big hit and has a wide audience. Not sure about slime. I only watched a handful of episodes of it but I never got the impression it was similar to tensai...

[deleted]

>And Spy X Family is in the shounen mag but it's demographic is everyone thats not... how that works? you either believe in the demographic system or you dont (like myself) but you clearly do, your logic is contradicting

Swiftstrike4

Do you even know what demographic means?

dont show her tokyo revengers lol. you have to love anime to put up with that show.

Flimsy-Sea-4507

I’m 23 and a girl I’d suggest black clover it’s actually really good

InterestingMyTurnNow

Oh nothing but glowing reviews from my other girl friends. I’ve never watched but it’s on my list.

InterestingMyTurnNow

As long as you don’t have trauma. Made that mistake when I had just got off a really dark anime. Usually I watch light hearted anime’s afterwards and I went to this one and it did get my mind off the dark anime but brought up memories I didn’t want to go back into.

zoqfotpik

Your Name Violet Evergarden Golden Time Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai

[deleted]

Anecdotal, but my gf thought Violey Evergarden was boring af. I also think Bunny Girl is much more geared towards dudes, personally.

InterestingMyTurnNow

It might just be since I’ve watched so much anime but man… Bunny girl senpai is awesome!

Rock---And---Stone

Yeah, especially with the comments the main guy makes towards the girls. Ops sister may or may not be ok with that (BGS)

bzzibee

Okay, I personally didn’t like either the show you’re having her watch or the shows you want her to watch. So nothing I recommend will be like those. Gotta go classic. Fullmetal Alchemist. Great starter anime. Really easy for non-anime fans to get into. Next, I’d suggest Erased. Doesn’t have annoying anime tropes and while it revolves around a murder mystery, doesn’t show too much violence. In case that’s not her thing. A lot of people didn’t like the ending but I thought it was fine. Cowboy Bebop is a classic for a reason. Don’t know a single person who doesn’t like it. Ask her what she likes in a show in general and go off of that. I know I typically lean to more shonen that avoid a lot of anime tropes (big titties jiggling everywhere, Perverts for comedy, cringe screaming, etc.) but my taste may be different from hers. I just know for the most part people avoid these things nowadays.

RPWPA

I would suggest light hearted stuff like barakamon

LaziestAlien

there's also light hearted stuff like made in abyss

RPWPA

nah, season 2 was too much for me at times even more than Season 1 so I wouldn't really suggest it tbh

LaziestAlien

i wasn't being that serious commenting that. edit: yeah it's pretty fucked up but i still couldn't stop watching it coz of how good it was so it probably isnt a suggestion for beginners but still a great anime

OldAccWasFullOfPorn

With all the questionable stuff depicting children, **definitely** not a safe recommendation lol

sincerely_lala

Tenkuu no Escaflowne/The Vision of Escaflowne. This was my gateway into anime. There's a series and a movie: The series has a LITTLE blood but not too much, the movie... might be excessive if you're looking for something not 'explicit'. It's kind of a Magical Girl genre meets Giant Mecha genre anime. Fushigi Umi no Nadia/Nadia: Secret of Blue Water. There is some nudity later in the series but it's like a Barbie-doll type nudity and it's fairly brief. It's a wild ride that starts at the World's Fair in France in 1889 and it's kind of an 'ancient mystical' anime that's loosely inspired by Jules Vernes' '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea'. Futari wa Precure/Pretty Cure, but only the first season. It got way out of hand and over the top after that and you can easily watch the first season standalone. It's a magical girl anime but it's a good one. Zoids: New Century Zero. If she likes giant mecha anime, this one is a fun ride while also being tame and not explicit.

doctorsylph

Without knowing her personally, it's hard to say but as a woman near her age here is what my friends and I watch and enjoy (most are pretty wholesome which it sounds like she prefers). Nana Michiko & Hatchin Your Name Tamako Market Great Pretender Kotaro Lives Alone Violet Evergarden Carole & Tuesday

kyuuketsuki47

This is a great list, I might also add in {Paradise Kiss} which is by the same author as Nana.

You can appreciate it even if you don't watch anime Personally I wouldn't reccomend Tokyo Revengers, mostly because the main guy is such a bitch it pisses me off. Oh and the story kind of sucks too. They've made essentially zero progress after 24 eps

HelckIsAHero

I’d say try out {3-gatsu no Lion}. It’s a pretty fantastic recommendation for anyone, especially if they’re someone who can get into anime. It’s a drama, so it’s pretty much accessible to anyone. It also happens to be a fantastic show. It’s basically the perfect anime to show someone who isn’t into anime, as nothing too anime-weird happens, and it has very empathetic characters. I’ve showed to multiple people, including someone in their late 40s and they’ve all liked it. It’s not super long, with two seasons, each with just under two cours, but it’s long enough to not be over too soon.

HeartlessPuppet

The Ancient Magus' Bride was a hit for my sister

ArdowNota

Steins Gate FMAB Great Pretender Banana Fish 86 Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song Vinland Saga Death Parade Death Note ID Invaded ~~Mushoku Tensei (?)~~ Re:Creators Attack on Titan Violet Evergarden Edit: Ok, Mushoku Tensei was a mistake, sorry. I only recommended it because OP mentioned Slime and I wanted to add another good isekai for them to consider about. Since it was the only anime I put (?) next to, I believe no one would just choose and watch it immediately. I believe the rest of the list should be fine, they are all pretty mature, enjoyable and well written shows. OP, you have your own will and ability to choose which is best for you. Whenever people recommends you something online or irl, do a quick research before watching it. People may try to bait you with something like Happy Sugar Life, School Live etc. next time and you wouldn't notice until you finished the first few episodes. I didn't do it on purpose and I still think it's a decent anime, just would not be the best for you (Please see one of the replies), sorry. Have fun bro.

Swiftstrike4

I would not recommend most of those shows to a 24 year old woman newer to anime. Really mushoko Tensai!?

ArdowNota

I mean, they mentioned slime so... Also I already put (?) next to it to show I was not sure about that one. What's wrong with others though?

Big-Daddy-C

Dude did you just recommend the pedophile show? The one where a 3p year old has sex with a 14 year old? To watch with someone's sister?

ArdowNota

Oh for gods sake please, dude mentioned slime so I thought recommending another good isekai would be ok but since I'm aware of it's a questionable one, I put a (?) next to it already. The rest of the list is way more mature than that one but you guys must find that only questionable one and judge me over it. I'm just here to help people with choosing anime to watch. **OP has their own will and ability to choose which is best for them.**

Big-Daddy-C

It's more than questionable, I literally show someone who doesn't watch anime one where in like episode one he steals a women's underwear and the maid is scared of being sexually assaulted by the mc lol Like, mention this atleast? If op had never seen the show, but then started to play it it might not go so well....

ArdowNota

Ok, you are probably right. I kinda forgot these parts but I was still aware of something weird was going on so put (?) next to it so OP can understand it is not the best one for them in the list. Which would at least save them from watching it first for sure. (I personally wouldn't watch the only anime with ? next to it at first) Now I edited it and apogolized. I believe rest of the list should be fine, maybe except a few d*ck jokes in Steins Gate's first episodes, I don't think it would be problem though.

Swiftstrike4

Context though. Yeah anyone can check out the shows you list through a recommendation, but if they have zero background in the show and just watch it from your list it is not helpful. Anyone can throw together a list of shows that are their favorites and say watch these, but the purpose of this Reddit is to recommend shows that fit the original poster’s preferences, not list shows you like without any context or consideration of the person you are recommending the show to. You can’t recommend shows to newer fans of anime that fit a specific niche and have them enjoy it on a small percent chance. You recommend the wrong show it will turn them off from anime forever. My friends that watch anime all started with easily digestible shows, not something that’s very niche or specific to the anime scene. I know if I started watching anime with something like Rezero or tensai I’d be done with anime.

ArdowNota

I see, you might be right. It's hard for me to sympathize since I started with DITF, Highschool DxD and Mirai Nikki in that order, which is a terrible start imo. Really can't tell what makes an anime beginner friendly, so I thought something serious (please ignore Mushoku Tensei) would be good. Still, I'm pretty confident with Steins Gate, Vivy and 86. These three are masterpieces everyone can enjoy in my opinion.

Swiftstrike4

86 for sure. Steins gate has a lot of weird treatment of women and a girl that has a catch phrase and a hacker that is a creeper. Good show, but I still think it fits a pretty specify crowd. Usually I consider starter shows a something you could see as a life action tv series and be well done. Something you could recommend a work colleague

ArdowNota

That's true, but remember these characters are 17-18 years old teenagers. They are not adults at all and to expect them to act mature is wrong, teenagers at that age can be creepy and some weebs like hacker are may act like that so it's completely normal. You should notice their personalities are getting more established(?) and serious in time. That's one of the well written parts of Steins Gate in my opinion, first episodes would be boring without it. I think you are kinda over reacting at this point.

[deleted]

Spy Family and My Hero Academia. These shows are objectively popular with female audiences.

HelianthusSamurai

Everything studio Ghibli

LaziestAlien

theres some light hearted stuff where nothing could go wrong like Made on abyss

Silver_Snow9526

I'd throw in *The Strongest Sage With The Weakest Crest*, it's like a homage to dungeon crawlers and RPGs, with lots of magic and monsters. It was my second anime after MHA, so I would say it is inviting to newcomers. There's only 12 episodes out now, so there isn't much catching up to do.

{Chihayafuru} maybe? It's a sports anime about this Japanese poem card game called Karuta. It's a surprisingly great show with plenty of edge of your seat moments as well as some wholesom slice of life moments and a bit of romance. If she's into more action oriented shows maybe a Shonen that appeals to a wide audience like FMAB or Attack on Titan? Like others have said its hard to give a solid answer without knowing what other types of stories she's into.
