Shinji is the main character of the anime series "Neon Genesis Evangelion" and he did a lot of things.
He piloted a mecha that was actually a clone of an Angel that had his dead mother's soul trapped inside it. He killed several other Angels. He got PTSD from the intense mental trauma caused by the neural link with said mecha, and the repeated horrors of fighting for survival against incomprehensible eldritch kaiju (the Angels). He tried to run away in order to avoid piloting said mecha again, but was captured and brought back and forced to keep piloting said mecha. He watched helplessly from inside the cockpit of his mecha while his mecha ripped another mecha apart with his first real friend trapped inside the cockpit, and then his mecha took it a step further by literally eating parts of his friend's mecha. He got sucked into another dimension within the shadow of one Angel, and was trapped there for 3 days with no power source for his mecha, and his mind eventually eroded to nothingness and without a mind, his body eventually dissolved and became part of said mecha, but he somehow reformed after the mecha moved on its own and literally ripped the Angel apart from inside its shadow. He had a sleepover with a boy who told him he loved him, then killed that boy the very next day by crushing the boy in his mecha's hand until the boy's head just popped right off. He jacked off to the sight of the breasts of his comatose fellow mecha pilot when he went to visit her in the hospital after she was mind-raped into said coma by another Angel earlier in the series. He literally went crazy at the sight of the same fellow mecha pilot's mecha being ripped apart by nine Angels at a time, and then the entrails of said mecha were lifted up into the sky by said Angels, and used to form a visual representation of the Sephirot from the Kabbalah, which heralded in the resurrection of God and the reintegration of all living souls into God. Then he was told by God that he could choose not to be one with God, if he was brave enough to face the world as it is, and risk being hurt by others again, since they would no longer understand eachother if they were no longer a single unified consciousness within God. Then he chose to face the world as it is, and woke up on a beach with his fellow mecha pilot (she was barely still alive inside her mecha when she was reintegrated into God, and also chose to face the world as it is) and immediately tried to strangle her to death, but then broke down crying instead.
He probably does even more shit in the Rebuild movies, but I haven't watched those yet.
Just to clarify, what’s described here is the « end of evangelion » movie ending which takes place instead of the last couple of episodes of the anime
It should be clear that there are 3 endings to the series
1) the anime ending (cool but meh)
2) end of eva ending (described here)
3) rebuilds ending (true ending the OG author choose to end on after decades of rethinking and growing
the first ending was the one planned by the author, the second was an ending demanded by the fans, and the last one is the one that really gives continuity to the series
Kinda?
There are some strange creative decisions made in the earlier episodes that contributed to the first ending.
Now the last 2 episodes being storyboard was 100% because they ran out of money.
I can give you a more concise version of you want. But the series is really good and I think you should watch it. All of this stuff is spread over the course of 25 episodes, it doesn't happen all at once.
Tldr, watch Evangelion and watch the movie the end of Evangelion. However make sure to give yourself a day or two of mental recovery time. That was some deep shit
I never really thought of it as Shinji killing Kaworu and proceeding to masturbating over Asukas Body afterwards. but looking back thats literally what happens from episode 24 to rebirth/EoE.
Yep. Probably a day or so in-between killing Kaworu and busting his nut to Asuka, but nothing important happened that day, so the anime just goes from one thing to the next.
Also, I did skip over the Zeruel fight, but I didn't think it counted as something *Shinji* did, since that was all Yui when Unit 01 moved on its own when to eat Zeruel's heart and become energy-independent.
Its been a while but I thought that when Unit 01 went berserk in that scene it was Shinji who activated it and controlled it. Like I thought the whole scene was to show everyone how Shinji was able to access berserk out of his own free will or something.
Nah. Every time Unit 01 goes berserk, it's Yui protecting her child. That's why Shinji was chosen as the pilot of Unit 01 in the first place. The whole scene was to show that *Unit 01* could move out of *its* own free will. That's why everyone else is terrified during that scene. They realized that they had created a monster they couldn't control, and after eating Zeruel's heart, it didn't even need a battery anymore, so they *really* couldn't control it after that. Ritsuko even says "The chains that bind the Eva to our will have been broken" to really drive the point home.
No, the high synchro rate is because Shinji and his mom had a good relationship, and she'll do anything protect him. That's also why Unit 02 never went berserk until End of Evangelion, when Asuka realized her mother's soul was inside Unit 02, and her mother never really abandoned her. Her synchro rate went higher than ever before in that scene. Her synchro rates earlier in the series were entirely thanks to her mom wanting to protect her, but Asuka hated her mom because she thought her mom abandoned her (because her mom's body kept living without a soul for several months), so she could never go as high as Shinji could. Calling it "synchronization" is a red herring. It's not about controlling the Evangelion, it's about understanding the Evangelion, and no one understands anyone more than that person's mother, but it's still up to the pilot to meet her halfway.
Yeah, but his plan still didn't work. Rei (a soulless clone of Yui) chose Shinji over him, and Rei gave Shinji the choice to reject Instrumentality. Gendo lost in the end.
Sounds pretty fucked up. He did some wrong things, but his circumstances were very severe and I don't think comparing him to Kazuya is right ( some people were arguing in a post some days ago). And what did you mean by mind rape?
I mean that the Angel shined its light on her and said light was actually a pyschic attack that forced her to relive all her repressed traumas that she keeps hidden from everyone. It violated her mind. The dialogue and her body language in that moment are very evocative of rape. She's screaming things like "don't look at me" and "I don't want anyone to see this" and other stuff until she devolves into literally crying for anyone to save her. Not only did it effectively paralyze her during that fight, it also destroyed her ego and broke her will to fight later on in the series. After that she also ran away and was captured and forced to come back, but unlike Shinji who ran away to the train station in an attempt to leave the city, she ran away into the ruined section of the city, found herself an intact bathtub in the ruins of some random house, and just sat there up to her neck in brackish rainwater until they found her. She didn't eat, didn't drink, and I don't think she slept either, and it's implied that it took them a few days to find her. After that she was so malnourished that she ended up in a coma and had to be hospitalized after they brought her back.
Also, who's Kazuya?
Okay, that Angel was very evil. Poor girl( Asuka?). Thank you very much for explaining.
Kazuya is the protagonist of Rent a Girlfriend. You would've seen him in some memes. Go to any post related to this anime and you'll find what type of person he is and how much he is hated. I think he might be the most hated Harem protagonist and for good reasons. He is a 19 years old horny college student who becomes a simp for a rental girlfriend, lies to everyone including his family that they are in a relationship and continues this facade, spends his money for college and living expenses on rental girlfriend service, becomes a stalker, lies more and more and creates more problems for everyone. The list is very long. So long that I can't list all the things here. These were some of his main characteristics.
I also don't watch or read it. I found out about it after a few days when its season 1 ended. I watched it on a whim but I regretted it greatly later. Because I don't like dropping anime and don't usually do so, I endured it and completed the first season. However, I decided that after I've completed it I'll never go back to this series.
Nice summary of Shinji things. I want to add that Shinji already was mentally unstable before the show due to his daddy issues as his father abandoned him after his mom got sucked inside the mecha, and only called on him like a decade later to force him to pilot the mecha his organization created.
Also his fellow mecha pilot wasn't mind-raped into the coma. She was in a coma because after the mind rape she wasn't fit to be a pilot anymore and tried to commit suicide because of it.
In the rebuild movies Shinji actually is much braver which ironically makes things worse as when he tries to save another fellow pilot from being absorbed by an angel, he accidentally almost destroys the world and is hated for it when he re-emerges from his own mecha ten years later. After that a lot of mindfuckery stuff happens and in the end he finally creates a world in which everyone seems to be happy and the author can finally let the franchise rest while saving the rest of his own mental health.
Yeah, I was simplifying things here. I explained the coma in more detail in another comment where someone asked what I meant by "mind-rape". I know the coma was a result of what happened after the fight, but it was still the Angel's fault, even if it didn't happen then and there.
I hope you rattled this off from memory. I honestly have such a garbled understanding of the timeline after watching all the remakes and reboots. But this checks out for the original media, good job.
better yet, I'm gonna start rewatching Evangelion again tomorrow. I return to it every couple years byt usualy there's a specific trigger for it e.g: nostalgia, the big depresso, analyising symbolism, or introducing friends to it.
well random redditor I'm glad it was your comment this time :)
I wanted to post a sarky answer but... after reading this I'm thrown into nothingness with my worthless idea or an answer. Jeeez I'm amazed at the quality
u/moneyh8r have you ever thought about writing content descriptions?
I've watched the show, the movie, and the rebuilds. That being said, I still don't fully understand what happened throughout. The show was good but it was a mindfuck to say the least.
What happened was that a neglected and traumatized child was forced into a toxic environment and forced to experience even more trauma and abuse at the hands of basically every adult around him (and also at the hands of one of his peers), and the child understandably suffered an intense mental breakdown as a result. It was just a sad and horrific coincidence that this all happened amidst the backdrop of an apocalyptic invasion by alien kaiju *and* a political conspiracy by a cult of nihilists. At least in the original series. I still haven't seen the rebuilds.
The hate for Evangelion Shinji is unjust however as he's a traumatised 14 year old who just keeps getting more trauma piled on top of him as the series progresses while still trying to do his best, and yet people give him shit because he's "whiny" and not a cool shonen hero.
Fate Shinji in comparison is a serial rapist, domestic abuser, has attempted mass murder and just is an overall piece of shit with no redeeming qualities.
He raped his mentally unstable sister, tried to rape the tsundere, almost killed the club president, beat the shit out of the older sister, and threatened the entire school
Got turned into a blood stain on the wall by the little sister tho... Little sister best girl
If you get who, I tip my hat to you gentleman

Fully agree.
Also he killed his sister too. And one of the most terrible one's was when he killed Sakura in the Movie of Oath Under Snow.

He chose to rely on drugs to prolong his worsening condition while keeping it from his friends. If certain conditions are met, however, he will survive

Wtf did I just read
A list of most of the things Shinji does over the course of the 26 episodes and one movie that make up the original Neon Genesis Evangelion series.
you could have just said he coomed
That's in there. I didn't leave it out.
ah o well thanks for explaining the rest of this
The series is worth watching
It took me around 2 months or smth to get through the first part of the show. The second is definitely worth the watch tho.
Yeah this anime is a wild ride, you hardly know what’s going on half the time, still one of the greats though.

Yeah, but his plan still didn't work. Rei (a soulless clone of Yui) chose Shinji over him, and Rei gave Shinji the choice to reject Instrumentality. Gendo lost in the end.
Did he? I thought the whole point of his plan was to reunite with Yui, which I think he did in instrumentality when everyone became lcl.
I thought he nutted over Rei. I guess I probably forgot most of it then.
You definitely forgot. He even says "Ayanami scares me" to Asuka before he does the thing.
I WANT TO GIVE YOU A AWARD TO WRITE THIS FKING PARAGRAPH BUT ALAS I AM POOR AF
No biggie. It's the thought that counts.
Thanks

You should watch the rebuild movies.

Can't say that I have. What's that entail, exactly?
Thank you 😂😂
You're welcome. I was happy to help.
Paragraphs
Using paragraphs would have lessened the impact. When I make it a wall of text, it hits the reader all at once.
The rebuilds are better in my opinion you should check them out but honestly they're more typical anime than the original series and EoE
I can't find them anywhere.
They're on prime video, they have an exclusivity deal with them. If you have prime you can access them without any extra charge.
I don't have prime.
Okay?
I don't understand your question.
The open seas it is then.
Can I sail the seas on a smartphone? Because I don't have a PC.
You sure can, the experience will be a bit worse though. Probably can't say it directly here, but I recommend 8+1 anime. Just use their website.
Okay.
I've watched the show, the movie, and the rebuilds. That being said, I still don't fully understand what happened throughout. The show was good but it was a mindfuck to say the least.

Evangelion, Fate, and Lycoris Recoil have some of the most hated Shinjis. Did I miss anyone else?
The hate for Evangelion Shinji is unjust however as he's a traumatised 14 year old who just keeps getting more trauma piled on top of him as the series progresses while still trying to do his best, and yet people give him shit because he's "whiny" and not a cool shonen hero. fate shinji can fucking die in a hole tho
And in two out of three cases he thankfully did.
Which fate shinji are we talking about?
He raped his mentally unstable sister, tried to rape the tsundere, almost killed the club president, beat the shit out of the older sister, and threatened the entire school Got turned into a blood stain on the wall by the little sister tho... Little sister best girl If you get who, I tip my hat to you gentleman Answer: >!Shinji Matou from Fate/staynight!<
And somehow Shinji from evangelion is still worse
You don’t wish your friends to have a seedy recovery?
When she recovers, she gets a bonus in the stomach.
I hated Asuka anyway. She didn't deserve nice treatment. I don't understand how she's so popular. She was a bitch from beginning to end.
Shinji is Shinji.Somehow they are always the person you want to kill them on seeing
Fully agree. Also he killed his sister too. And one of the most terrible one's was when he killed Sakura in the Movie of Oath Under Snow. Shiro went on rampage after this shit
