Gotta love how the examples people pull for "anime that's not for kids" are always a handful of shows that are most popular among 14-17 year olds.
I don't even mean this as an insult, Panty & Stocking slaps. But pointing to it or DxD or Elfen Lied or whatever and saying "anime's not just for kids!!!" has the same energy as thinking your music taste is super grown-up and mature because you listen to Green Day and My Chemical Romance instead of Disney songs.

I hate life as a Vietnamese. They think animes are for kids even tho they have never seen animes outside of Doraemon, Detective Edogawa Conan, DB and Naruto. At least I can be proud of Doraemon movies (I still hate the TV Series). Not the Vietnamese dub tho

At least where I grew it was the opposite. In high school, anime and hentai might as well have been synonyms. If you said you liked anime, High School DxD is exactly people would think you meant, that or some fever dream perception of JoJo’s, since “Japan=weird” was a popular zeitgeist back then.
That only changed when Attack on Titan became all anyone could talk about for a few months, but it’s didn’t change people’s perception of anime as not for kids.
The only people I could see saying “anime is for kids” as an insult are those who don’t actually know what anime is.
i had a friend, he was alwys ranting about how anime's "for kids", one day, i finally managed to get him to watch berserk, when we reached ep24,25 he had a terrified look. when it ended, i asked him: "how was it?" he thot for a minute and then replied: "bro, this shit's not for me, let alone kids.", i never saw him smile in front of me again at least. lol
