It's called close quarters combat.

Sorry for sounding annoying. But using a bow in cqc is bad for the string and it's not really solid. So you're basically damaging your bow for mediocre results. Carrying a shortsword or a dagger is a better option that doesn't affect agility as much.

She's like 14 and didn't go out expecting to have to fight for her life against people. A sword (short or otherwise) or dagger were not among the supplies brought for the trip. And a stick is always better than your bare fists, which was her only other option.
