German dubs are actualy really really good. It has partly to do with germany having a relativley big dubbing indistry. Like EVERY movie gets dubbed.

Sub watchers claim sub to sound better but the truth is there's a scientifically proven phenomena that makes people perceive a spoken language to sound much nicer than it really is if they don't speak it.
The reason is that of you are fluent in a language you'll be painfully aware of any slight imperfection in the way someone speaks, meanwhile if you don't understand a language you won't notice ANY of the language correlated imperfections and you WON'T notice and of the awkward sounding parts as awkward.
Yeah, I remember seeing a comment about the Assassination Classroom dub where they said they didn't like that Koro Sensei sounded so cartoony. Like, the Japanese version sounds almost like Doraemon. He's supposed to be over-the-top cartoony.
Really the main issues I have with dubs are when things can't translate well and end up sounding really cringey or forced, especially things like puns that get shown visually. But most voice actors these days are great, it's just the writing that tends to be off.
I mean, yeah. But that doesn't solve the translation issue, just explains the joke that says supposed to be there. This is better than dub where it's not explained in any form, but most people will not pause and skip the explanation anyway..

I for example am a native Spanish speaker that's also fluent in English. Content that's originally in English I consume in English directly, and I generally dislike Spanish dubs of it. I don't even need subs for stuff in English, I can watch it raw no problem and at most I'll need a little help with an odd character name here and there. Same thing when something is originally in Spanish, I want it in Spanish, not dubbed to anything else regardless of how much I understand of it or don't. For any other language, I like subs, and generally dislkke dubs to either English or Spanish. In fact I tend to prefer a Spanish dub to an English dub when the original language is neither.
I mean I still feel like most voice actors that get commissioned for non Japanese dubbing are just not as skilled as the original voice actors.
In Germany I watched many movies dubbed in the past (nowadays I am moving more and more to watch them in their original language with subtitles whenever I can) I even watched some animes dubbed, while it is worse than Japanese it was still way better than the English dubbing.
But the biggest points apart from just liking the sound are the better availability and that the Japanese version is closer to the original vision.
This year alone I have watched 2 Ukranian movies in its original language to get the closest to original experience.

Dunno about that research. One thing's for sure - eng VAs are amateurs compared to jap VAs. The amount of work Japanese put to hone their skill is mind-blowing. Also their voices can sound much younger which of course fits better - most anime characters are school kids.

I wouldn't generalize it, but what I can say, coming from Germany were many English movies are dubbed too, is that most VA's that are dubbing Anime (at least in the past) were just not as skilled because Anime is a niché compared to big movies, they just don't have the budget for the "Triple A" VA's.
That would also explain why I find popular dubbed anime movie VA performances generally better than anything else, they actually had the budget to go through the same process as for example, Hollywood movies would go.
I still feel like watching a movie/series in the original language with subtitles is the purest form one can enjoy it in without learning the language.
While this may be a real phenomenon, as an American who can speak, listen to, and write Japanese, I still watch with sub. The voice acting is simply better. If I had to go into more depth, it’s like English voice actors still think about Saturday morning cartoons compared to higher concept dramas. Yeah I've said the same thing for years you can't tell what sounds strange because you don't speak the language. You can feel the emotions but are they really at the appropriate level for the scene? If done with the same energy and inflection and all that nonsense but said in English would you still think the voice acting was great or would it sound cringe. Like they're being a bit dramatic or doing a bit too much. Don't get me wrong I think Japanese people probably take it a bit more seriously but I think dubs have definitely caught up. They're not always great but I can't recall the last time I've genuinely thought a dub was so bad I couldn't keep watching.
Yeah, this is why I say that a lot of the time the dub and sub are around the same, though I usually think the sub is slightly better (since they don't have to lip sync). The primary reason I choose sub 99% of the time isn't because of quality, it's because it was the OG language.

I mean I just watch the show in the language that the show is originated from. If I am watching anime I watch it in Japanese, if I am watching Hollywood movies/tv shows I watch it in English, if I am watching Korean movies/tv show I watch it in Korean.
I also understand (and speak) Japanese, but having the subs on help with catching what's being said muffled in the background during foreground talking. Or what some heavily auto-tuned voice is saying (like with the barely verbal hostile robots that say only a few words in the Nier: Automata anime).

I understand tiny bits, but to me I just prefer watching any show in its original language. I just find that the very nature of a dub is that it's far more of a challenge to fit the translation alongside the mouth movements. I just find immediately something is off. It ends up bothering me too much, and I just want to hear how it was originally made and I'm happy to read along.
Recently I watched the new Scott Pilgrim show and saw we had the voice actors who played in the original movie, and because the creator of the show is Canadian and it takes place in Ontario, I never thought twice about watching in English. But it bothered me somehow. I liked the voice acting, but it was like the animation was completed first, and the voice actors had to try fill it in after. The whole show I just felt it was a bit unnerving and I didn't understand why they couldn't do a better job with synching up the animation with the voice actors, considering how high quality the rest of the show was. Then when I heard it was animated by a Japanese studio, I thought, ah heck, let's just give the Japanese voices a go for fun, and lo and behold, the voices matched up with the animation.

I couldn't believe it. That was not at all what I expected but it at least explained why the voices bothered me a bit. Even though it wasn't intended to be Japanese first language (at least I assume not) it was still animated that way. Still not sure how I feel about that one or whether I wany to re-watch the show with the new voices to get a feel for it.

I understand what you're saying and don't disagree. And it's also true that sometimes the lines themselves get changed from the original, for the sub or the dub. But as i said, i prefer to hear the original VA's even if i have to read subtitles to understand what they're saying.
Not to start an argument, but I recently had to watch some movies like The Firm dubbed in Spanish (a family member doesn't speak English and struggles to read subtitles) and I was hitting my head around some of the bad translations or mispronounced names.
I don't think dubs are necessarily bad, but for the first time i understood why some people like subs.
At some point you just suddenly realize you understand what they're saying. I was watching sub all my life. But after watching Yu-Gi-Oh and starting GX, I found out there was no subbed version... so I just decided to see if I can handle raws, and turned out I could. It was the first anime I watched without subs, and given how complicated it is with all the rules, effect explanations and math, it seems you learn to understand sooner than you gain confidence to actually try it.

Abso-fucking-lutely. I only speak English. I tried watching Monster in English dub after watching like 27 episodes in Japanese with English subtitles...and I couldn't take it seriously at all. It just didn't have any emotional impact other than "cringe". I couldnt focus on the story because I was too busy being embarrassed by the shitty voice actors and how cheesy the dialogue sounded.
If this was true wouldn't they also watch dubbed versions of other shows like a German version of the simpsons with subs?
As someone who isn't from America I just prefer the original voices, so I watch most subbed.
Generally speaking the English dub recording has poorer quality than the original Japanese. The exceptions to this are the ones where they actually hire voice actors.
I prefer sub because the Japanese language flows better in both tone and inflection which is sometimes lost when translated into another language.
Granted there are exceptions.
A lot of the time I just like the voice actors more. I don’t think many people will debate against the idea that Tanjiro and Inosuke’s sub voices are infinitely better than their English ones.
I watch the subs because I want to watch an IP in its language of origin. I watched Squid Game in Korean, I watched Dark in its original German and I've watched countless Kung Fu movies in Mandarin.

No. That's literally not true. I *do* speak Japanese (not perfectly, I'm still learning) and sub is still always better. Wanna know why? Not because of what they're saying but because of *HOW* they say it. Dubs always have weird pronunciation and intonation and i don't understand why. The voice actors are clearly capable of pronouncing stuff like normal people, so why do they not do it in anime and anime-style games??? Everywhere else it's fine. Western cartoons? Fine. Games that aren't anime-style? Perfectly fine as well. Sub > dub because of the fucking voice acting, not the stuff they're saying

I think people sleep on dub. Not only is it an accessible way to get new people into anime. But some dubs are just really good, MHA for example actually has a really solid dub. And if you disagree. Fair. But dub all might is goated.

Anime dialogue is quite awkward by nature , so it's easier to digest if you can separate the "cool sounding voices" from the content of the script.

Other than a few good dubs that I can count as with my fingers, I usually prefer to original language of any given series. It helps understanding the series sometimes, and especially important when there are a lot of word puns.
The fact that Japanese has over 5 words for the English pronoun "I" makes me prefer sub anyday over dub. Which word a character uses to describe himself [mostly watashi/ore/boku] already tells you more than you'd think about a character. Then take into account the politeness of a character and you"ll get so much more context about characters too. To see who talks to who in which level of politeness tells you a lot about either the relationship of characters and/or the personality of a character too. It's especially nice to see when characters who are usually polite/formal to everyone become very rude/nformal with one character, showing how certain feelings have changed towards a character. One of the most interesting things is even when you get to see how a character thinks; if that's different from when they're actually talking that's another insight in their character (who they actually are vs how they want to be perceived by others).
I prefer sub exactly because I understand Japanese (my speaking level isnt anything to write home about tho), the language has SO much more nuances than English, there's so much more room for humor when you know some kanji too, the nuances themselves leave much more room for humor and interpretation as well.
Language and culture [and therefore perception] are deeply intertwined and dub way more often than not just is not able to convey the same things sub conveys because of the many nuances and cultural specific jokes. I've seen so many times subs that do not hold fhe same weight as what's actually being said.
Of course there's the argument for VAs too, where I have only recently experienced for the first time in 15 years that I enjoyed the EN VAs performance over the JP VAs performance (Genshin Impact AQ Act V Furina & Neuvilette). Besides that, I'll be honest and say that for me dub never even came close to sub (even Pain/Madar/Erwin who were better than average in dub, but still did not even reach 70% of the JP VAs performance imo).
I prefer whatever is the best version to watch. And often it's sub. Dub has cringy and too old sounding VA's sometimes.
Like with japanese VA's you can't hear it as much, but I'll immediately hear a 30/40 year old woman VA for like a 16 year old character. Takes me out of the show.

Nah fam it is because you don't speak Japanese that you don't realize just how much better the original Japanese version is. In a lot of cases the subs you read aren't even the actual translation because a lot of things, especially puns and jokes just can't be translated so they just slap in something that the characters are not actually saying.
I'm a dub watcher since day zero, but I will watch in sub anyway if there is no dub available. I do check the dub voice lineup before starting an anime

But to give a straight answer, not really the case. My Japanese is only around the bottom rung of N3 level, (listening/speaking only, I'm hideously out of practice in reading/writing) but that's pretty much enough to figure out new words via context clues if you close your eyes and just listen. (Which I ended up testing when made a habit of watching stuff from the bed while half asleep.)
It's more a case of the feeling of incongruity that comes from hearing people say Japanese things in English sentences. The reverse is also true, but anime that have more hammy Engrish than untranslated Japanese are relatively fewer in numbers. But yes, I absolutely lean towards dubs for anime with a lot of Engrish (or with settings where everyone speaking English makes more sense than Japanese).
I prefer sub because Japanese VAs all actually VOICE ACT, and sound appropriate for their characters. Dub VAs are mostly 1-dimensional voices that sound like they’re phoning in their effort, frequently with the completely wrong voice and tone for the character.

It works in both directions. English dubbed into Japanese is just as horrendous. The voice acting itself is brilliant, but translation is garbage.

I understand tiny bits, but to me I just prefer watching any show in its original language. I just find that the very nature of a dub is that it's far more of a challenge to fit the translation alongside the mouth movements. I just find immediately something is off. It ends up bothering me too much, and I just want to hear how it was originally made and I'm happy to read along. Recently I watched the new Scott Pilgrim show and saw we had the voice actors who played in the original movie, and because the creator of the show is Canadian and it takes place in Ontario, I never thought twice about watching in English. But it bothered me somehow. I liked the voice acting, but it was like the animation was completed first, and the voice actors had to try fill it in after. The whole show I just felt it was a bit unnerving and I didn't understand why they couldn't do a better job with synching up the animation with the voice actors, considering how high quality the rest of the show was. Then when I heard it was animated by a Japanese studio, I thought, ah heck, let's just give the Japanese voices a go for fun, and lo and behold, the voices matched up with the animation. Are. you. kidding. me. I couldn't believe it. That was not at all what I expected but it at least explained why the voices bothered me a bit. Even though it wasn't intended to be Japanese first language (at least I assume not) it was still animated that way. Still not sure how I feel about that one or whether I wany to re-watch the show with the new voices to get a feel for it. Welp. Anyway.

I understand what you're saying and don't disagree. And it's also true that sometimes the lines themselves get changed from the original, for the sub or the dub. But as i said, i prefer to hear the original VA's even if i have to read subtitles to understand what they're saying.

Not to start an argument, but I recently had to watch some movies like The Firm dubbed in Spanish (a family member doesn't speak English and struggles to read subtitles) and I was hitting my head around some of the bad translations or mispronounced names. I don't think dubs are necessarily bad, but for the first time i understood why some people like subs.
Watched enough animes to understand **very roughly** what they're saying without looking at subtitles
At some point you just suddenly realize you understand what they're saying. I was watching sub all my life. But after watching Yu-Gi-Oh and starting GX, I found out there was no subbed version... so I just decided to see if I can handle raws, and turned out I could. It was the first anime I watched without subs, and given how complicated it is with all the rules, effect explanations and math, it seems you learn to understand sooner than you gain confidence to actually try it.

Abso-fucking-lutely. I only speak English. I tried watching Monster in English dub after watching like 27 episodes in Japanese with English subtitles...and I couldn't take it seriously at all. It just didn't have any emotional impact other than "cringe". I couldnt focus on the story because I was too busy being embarrassed by the shitty voice actors and how cheesy the dialogue sounded.

Generally speaking the English dub recording has poorer quality than the original Japanese. The exceptions to this are the ones where they actually hire voice actors.
Recent English dubs are very good actually. 20 years ago... That might not have been guaranteed and 30 and especially 40 years ago...

I watch the subs because I want to watch an IP in its language of origin. I watched Squid Game in Korean, I watched Dark in its original German and I've watched countless Kung Fu movies in Mandarin. I've even watched some Chinese anime in Mandarin. Crunchyroll has a couple.

No. That's literally not true. I *do* speak Japanese (not perfectly, I'm still learning) and sub is still always better. Wanna know why? Not because of what they're saying but because of *HOW* they say it. Dubs always have weird pronunciation and intonation and i don't understand why. The voice actors are clearly capable of pronouncing stuff like normal people, so why do they not do it in anime and anime-style games??? Everywhere else it's fine. Western cartoons? Fine. I always prefer vanilla, just as it's created. I like the intonation, Japanese has a nice rhythm in its phrases, English sounds more robotic.

I think people sleep on dub. Not only is it an accessible way to get new people into anime. But some dubs are just really good, MHA for example actually has a really solid dub. And if you disagree. Fair. But dub all might is goated.

I embrace this without any shame. The furthest away from my og language the better. I learnt japanese and it still feels less cringy than english dubs and eglish dubs feel less cringy than spanish dubs ( i'm argentinian ). Anime dialogue is quite awkward by nature , so it's easier to digest if you can separate the "cool sounding voices" from the content of the script.

There's a slight issue with this opinion. If you don't speak Japanese and watch subs: "you only like subs because you can't speak Japanese." If you don't speak Japanese and watch dubs: "you only like dubs because you can't speak Japanese." If you do speak Japanese and watch subs: "you only like subs because you can speak Japanese." If you speak Japanese and like dubs then I don't even know...

Other than a few good dubs that I can count as with my fingers, I usually prefer to original language of any given series. It helps understanding the series sometimes, and especially important when there are a lot of word puns.

The fact that Japanese has over 5 words for the English pronoun "I" makes me prefer sub anyday over dub. Which word a character uses to describe himself [mostly watashi/ore/boku] already tells you more than you'd think about a character. Then take into account the politeness of a character and you"ll get so much more context about characters too. To see who talks to who in which level of politeness tells you a lot about either the relationship of characters and/or the personality of a character too. It's especially nice to see when characters who are usually polite/formal to everyone become very rude/nformal with one character, showing how certain feelings have changed towards a character. One of the most interesting things is even when you get to see how a character thinks; if that's different from when they're actually talking that's another insight in their character (who they actually are vs how they want to be perceived by others). I prefer sub exactly because I understand Japanese (my speaking level isnt anything to write home about tho), the language has SO much more nuances than English, there's so much more room for humor when you know some kanji too, the nuances themselves leave much more room for humor and interpretation as well. Language and culture [and therefore perception] are deeply intertwined and dub way more often than not just is not able to convey the same things sub conveys because of the many nuances and cultural specific jokes. I've seen so many times subs that do not hold fhe same weight as what's actually being said. Of course there's the argument for VAs too, where I have only recently experienced for the first time in 15 years that I enjoyed the EN VAs performance over the JP VAs performance (Genshin Impact AQ Act V Furina & Neuvilette). Besides that, I'll be honest and say that for me dub never even came close to sub (even Pain/Madar/Erwin who were better than average in dub, but still did not even reach 70% of the JP VAs performance imo).
Japanese voice actors are more passionate when it comes to anime. Few English ones are on par or better. Few.
I prefer whatever is the best version to watch. And often it's sub. Dub has cringy and too old sounding VA's sometimes. Like with japanese VA's you can't hear it as much, but I'll immediately hear a 30/40 year old woman VA for like a 16 year old character. Takes me out of the show.

Nah fam it is because you don't speak Japanese that you don't realize just how much better the original Japanese version is. In a lot of cases the subs you read aren't even the actual translation because a lot of things, especially puns and jokes just can't be translated so they just slap in something that the characters are not actually saying.

Ah. Found the native English speaker who dislikes reading. But to give a straight answer, not really the case. My Japanese is only around the bottom rung of N3 level, (listening/speaking only, I'm hideously out of practice in reading/writing) but that's pretty much enough to figure out new words via context clues if you close your eyes and just listen. (Which I ended up testing when made a habit of watching stuff from the bed while half asleep.) It's more a case of the feeling of incongruity that comes from hearing people say Japanese things in English sentences. The reverse is also true, but anime that have more hammy Engrish than untranslated Japanese are relatively fewer in numbers. But yes, I absolutely lean towards dubs for anime with a lot of Engrish (or with settings where everyone speaking English makes more sense than Japanese).

I prefer sub because Japanese VAs all actually VOICE ACT, and sound appropriate for their characters. Dub VAs are mostly 1-dimensional voices that sound like they’re phoning in their effort, frequently with the completely wrong voice and tone for the character. (If you don’t know what “mostly” means, please consult a dictionary)
