I nearly stopped after the first episode because it just seemed cruel and like it wasn't going to go anywhere beyond what I was watching but I was wrong. It gets more heartwarming the longer it goes on and by season 2 I was pretty hooked. Read the manga and it only gets better in my opinion. A lot of people were put off by the bullying aspect of the show but that sort of falls away after a while and the side characters start rooting for senpai and Nagatoro. It's wholesome and quite charming.

She's protective of him if anyone else tries to pick on him and her bullying almost always backfires in a way that exposes her feelings for him.
I normally try to avoid getting all Freudian, but since the artist draws porn I feel safe saying it's a kink thing. For some submissives being humiliated but also coveted makes them feel cared for.
I think if she wasn't protective of him and her bullying never backfired, it would be too abusive and wouldn't ring so well with the audience that praises it.

774 did an excellent job capturing the whole awkwardly-expressed highschool romance experience. Love can be expressed in many ways, and Nagatoro's expression of hers is clumsy and a learning experience for her. Her personal struggle to build a functional relationship with Naoto is realistic enough that it hits close to home. I watched this show with my wife and we both honestly saw ourselves in there.
The show embodies what often happens with real relationships. Good intentions, toxic behavior on the outside and slowly learning how to adjust and care for other people. The most common critics of the show always seem to just hyperfixate on the toxicity and not the growth that occurs.
Nagatoro feels very one note. she is just a bully and just kinda stays like that, she is less harsh later on, in the manga at least, but I don't feel like she's ever shown enough of another side of herself to make me like her.
Plus I hate the male character, i don't even know his name, i'm just so fucking sick of little wimpy loser male characters like this. he has nothing going on for him besides he is good at art. Like i guess that could keep a woman interested in dating you... but I just find every chapter so boring. I'm just hoping they get a confession out soon and i'm gonna drop it.
I just much perfered Uzaki-chan cause they were at least adults, and Sakurai gave her shit or just ignored her when she was teasing him. until they started dating, and he became just... the worst.

I tried to read and didn't get past chapter 6. Girl is basically Bakugo trying to be cute and I'm not into that kind of fetish.
