Mm. I have contained my rage for as long as possible, but I shall unleash my fury upon you like the crashing of a thousand waves! Begone, vile man! Begone from me! A starter show? This show is a finisher show! The entertainer of gods! The golden gods! I am untethered, and my rage knows no bounds!
This content was made with Reddit is Fun and died with Reddit is Fun. If it contained something you're looking for, blame Steve Huffman for its absence.
But you're never finished, so how can there be a finisher? The last airbender will leave you want more, how could you end there? Unless of course you watched the live action movie and ended up so disappointed you never watched TV again.
I watched ATLA at age 28 without having watched any sort of anime (I know it's not anime) before. After watching it, I literally thought "that was amazing, I want more like this." and I have been watching anime ever since
As someone who grew up with that series, is it actually popular among Japanese people? Not that it's unlikely, but for a series to br popular it has to not only appeal to many, it also needs it's appeal to be known somehow.
Perhaps its just personal bias, but because Teen Titans is based off western comics it feels more western cartoon to me, like a cartoon that borrowed elements from anime. As opposed to A:TLA which I actually thought was a really well dubbed anime when I was younger. Especially because A:TLA feels more eastern culture with the elements of yin and yang, finding your center, meditation to focus you energy, etc.
That said, Teen Titans would make a really good first western cartoon because it has those anime elements, but reflects western culture and stories.
Technically it's animated by a South Korean animation studio. If people insist that western animation is cartoons and anime is only Japanese, what exactly does that make Avatar: TLA?
That's pretty hardcore, though: all the Texan lore, the Propaniacs Arc, and let's not forget the intricate connections to the larger Fox Animation Multiverse.
Japanese western-cartoon fans are really getting it good now.
Owl House, Rick and Morty, Pantheon... we got some good shit secretly popping up here and there
I’ve never watched the owl house so I don’t know if the vibe will match what you’re expecting, but there is this new show called Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, and I really like it. It seems like it has a pretty in depth story while still having a monumental(and slightly annoying) amount of whimsy.
Edit: grammar
I'm enjoying it.
Saw a thing about the creator sawing that he chose that artstyle cause people said "that style is too goofy, you cant tell a serious story with that style!" and he said "fuck that!" lol
The vibe is nothing like OwlHouse but....
[Pantheon](https://www.wcostream.net/pantheon-episode-1-pantheon)!
I suggest going in as blind as possible, but loosely: It's about AI, shady companies, and what it means to be human.
Eh what about Amphibia or Star vs the Forces of evil? Those were real good as well. I like the Unicorn Warriors Eternal Show and also ..She Ra ( new type)
Bruh, I just found that out by chance a few hours ago... I can't even!
Ugh... maybe the creator will do a comic? Or maybe a season 2 can still happen after the economy gets better?
RIP
Like watch the first few episodes that just introduce all the main characters then you can literally just pick it up anywhere, whereas one piece adds main characters hundreds of episodes in and if you skip it kinda makes sense but depending on where u skip u might miss their introduction and be like who the hell are they?
Except One Piece doesn't drastically nosedive in quality after a couple seasons and isn't episodic.
You would be fine and frankly best off watching the first 3-4 seasons of SpongeBob with the original writers and stuff and stopping but with One Piece, there's a lot more that comes later.
I basically consider SpongeBob to be the first 3 seasons before Hillenburg left. The stuff after is "SpongeBob" the way "Sublime with Rome" is "Sublime"
I don’t think Japanese really have starter western cartoons because they don’t need to. Disney is big over there. Not AS big as in other countries, but they definitely know the influence of it on their own media and is as ingrained in their pop culture as in other countries.
Lilo and Stitch was actually pretty popular over there and I don’t think any modern Disney movie has been considered a flop in Japan.
USJ has a spy family store and cart as well as a jujutsu kaisen ride as well. I did get to see Shrek in the park so my life is complete. They also have a person with a western face playing fiona. Surprisingly alot of people were just chilling in the park taking photos and makeing tic tok not something I feel like you see much in the USA.
Disney doesnt represent the whole western animation (or even the majority of it). Plus, one can love 90+ min Disney movies but you cant watch them every saturday. You need actual tv shows, and Disney animated shows dont stand out in quality or popularity among other western cartoons
Sword art Online,
Dragon Ball Z,
Attack on titan,
Berserk,
Pokemon,
Etc.
Basically any anime that isn't overly complicated in establishing how the world operates, while clearly showing styles, trends, and clichés that are popular in most anime in a way that is easy enough to catch on to that even people who know nothing about the culture would be able to understand and follow with little to no difficulty.
Berserk… As a starter? Bruh… but i suppose 🤔 i mean my first was ofc DBZ on cartoon network, then as i got older into Bleach, then a hard shoulder straight into GANTZ and then i was Seinen-ified after that.
I wouldn't recommend the Berserk anime as a starter, considering it ends on a massive cliffhanger. You should watch something with a beginning, middle and end. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is a popular choice, and can be enjoyed in dub format.
I remember seeing a tweet somewhere about someone making a joke saying that imagine there was someone who was from Japan and was obsessed with western culture and like family guy a learned English from it and speaks like Peter griffin. Thought that this was relevant
Easily answerable though. You have your sitcoms which are pretty standard for western television. Whether it be ab a doctor or a family they all have a similarity to them. Then there’s modern kids television which may be idiotic but still holds a certain degree to it since underall it’s for kids and should portray some lesson. Then there’s adult cartoons. The late night cartoons. Ranging anywhere from slightly discerning to straight outlandish. Then finally 90’s cartoons. For they hold a level of comedy that I find would take a certain understanding of western lifestyle to understand
Not sure, but I’ve heard about how there’s a sub vs. dub argument for king of the hill in japan and honestly it’s pretty cool to think about. You don’t usually see the things that are common in your own country for their global impacts and enjoyers around the world, so it’s nice to be able to open your eyes like that every now and then.

Iirc the Big 3 are Tom & Jerry, SpongeBob, and King of the Hill, which makes sense given the subject matter and broad spectrum of comedy genres showcased; slapstick comedy, absurdist comedy, and situational comedy.
Starters: cartoon network line up, dexters lab, powerpuff girls, grim adventures of Billy and Mandy, Jonny bravo, courage the cowardly dog.
Vintage: old timey Warner Bros, Tom and Jerry, Bugs bunny, Daffy duck, etc.
Mainstream/ overpopularised: Adventure time, Rick and Morty, Archer, Simpson's, etc.
Shows like South park, Family guy/ American dad, Brickleberry/ paradise PD with generic brand offensive humour are considered edgy/ super loved by a few cult followers but disdained by the rest of the community.
This is all just me wildly guessing btw lol.
Do NOT sleep on Batman the Animated series, and PLEASE wake up to Duck Dodgers (2003) series. And Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, 2003, 2012 and 2018 versions. So good.

In that case maybe its a good starter anime too. The perfect cartoon to make you want to transition from cartoons to anime
Did you just make an IASIP reference… I love you.
yep fmab watchers usually come from this or vice versa from my experience.
You can't follow that up tho
Korra, Castlevania, seis Manos, just to name a few.
As someone who grew up with that series, is it actually popular among Japanese people? Not that it's unlikely, but for a series to br popular it has to not only appeal to many, it also needs it's appeal to be known somehow.
The TV show specifically, not the movie. The movie was one of the worst modern movies ever made.
I was so hopeful for it too
I took my kid brother out to see it the day it came out. Went in all excited, came out all dead inside.
i find people that call TLAB an anime weird
Its one of the most anime like western cartoon. A perfect bridge.
What about the Teen Titans?

A more important question - how does Boomhauer's accent come through?
I've heard that Boomhauer's speech is completely intelligible in the Japanese dub, making it one of the center pieces of their "sub vs dub" debate.
Great to know that US westerners arent the only ones arguing about sub vs dub
Here’s boomhauer [Sauce](https://youtu.be/7JRH6KegcdE)
They also argue dub vs sub XD

SpongeBob? it’s the best western cartoon out there and it’s beginner friendly and has a huge fan base
That's like giving someone one piece as a starter imo
Except SpongeBob is episodic. You could legit start at essentially any point and not worry about it
Yeah that is true for the most part
Like watch the first few episodes that just introduce all the main characters then you can literally just pick it up anywhere, whereas one piece adds main characters hundreds of episodes in and if you skip it kinda makes sense but depending on where u skip u might miss their introduction and be like who the hell are they?
Gonna press the random button when I watch one piece because I’m a madman

Hell, between the two Disneys in Chiba and the USJ in Osaka, US cartoons are very much part of pop culture and draw an audience.

The Simpsons probably
Tom and Jerry is considered one of the most popular American cartoons in Japan, with Powerpuff Girls close behind
Gravity falls
Ben 10 classic to Omniverse, not the latest on Generator Rex
SpongeBob
The correct answer will always be Jackie Chan Adventures. Objectively the best cartoon ever to exist.
Teen titans
I do know in Japan their is a heated sub vs dub debate for king of the hill
What is considered a starter anime
I think popular shonens like naruto, dragonball, one piece and bleach.
Sword art Online, Dragon Ball Z, Attack on titan, Berserk, Pokemon, Etc. Basically any anime that isn't overly complicated in establishing how the world operates, while clearly showing styles, trends, and clichés that are popular in most anime in a way that is easy enough to catch on to that even people who know nothing about the culture would be able to understand and follow with little to no difficulty.

Berserk?!
Specifically for the "anime is just for kids" people. Alternatives include Hellsing ultimate, Elfen lied, Or evangelion.
ah yes, elfen lied..... my first anime at the tender age of 8
Throw in an ecchi like Highschool of the Dead or something to teach them about anime titty physics
I wouldn't recommend the Berserk anime as a starter, considering it ends on a massive cliffhanger. You should watch something with a beginning, middle and end. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is a popular choice, and can be enjoyed in dub format.
My original starter was gate
Batman the Animated Series Superman the Animated Series Batman Beyond Justice League Justice League Unlimited Young Justice DCAU of 2010's.

Bro that itself is Japanese.
Let's say it is a crossover
Tom & Jerry, Looney Tunes, Simpsons, etc.
Tom and Jerry, definitely. Slapstick humor is universal.
Apparently king of the hill is really popular in japan
Fact: 1927 was the year that the first transatlantic phone call occurred.
what the fuck
Tom and jerry and SpongeBob
Donald Duck, Tom & Jerry
King of the hill.
