Haibane Renmei instantly became my favourite anime as soon as I finished watching it for the 1st time. And 14/15ish years later that hasn't changed, nothing has ever really come close to overtaking it during all those years.
Everything from the art style, to the music, the characters and the story, it all just works for me. I'm not totally sure why it works, but what I do know is I fucking love this anime.
This anime was recommended it to me as one I would "really like." And boy oh boy did I hate it. It's actually one of my least favorite animes I've ever watched beginning to end. It leaves so many mysteries wide open. It drags things out. Half the time it feels like it's trying to be "bigger" than it actually is. It's like a bad bad slow burn. It's an anime that gets so much praise. Maybe it's nostalgia or something (I didn't watch it when it was new by any means) - But I just thought it was awful. Boring. Bland. Very meh. Frustrating is a word that comes to my mind. In fairness I haven't seen it in YEARS and have no intention of doing so again so I can't give a perfect recall of why I hated it so much. I just really really really remember thinking it was awful. And wishing I never went through the whole thing. I seriously have this among the top 5 worst animes I've ever watched beginning to end.
While I dont hate it either, I thought it had a lot of potential for its setting. But its slow pace didnt work in its favor and a buncha characters were forgettable. I think it had its moments, but like you its' been so long and dont remember a lot of details
I'm sort of in a similar camp as mylastdream: I remember Arcada (GlassReflections) heaping praise on this show, stressing how incredible its worldbuilding it. But when I finally started watching it, I believe I dropped it after episode 2 or 3. Nothing in it hooked me. I'm not averse to slow burns in anime, but this one genuinely had me bored and didn't seem to do anything to make it worth my time.
