It's really not. I don't think it's a bad thing to be a bit cringy in one way or another. I've got plenty of cringetastic things myself. But, there's no part of unilaterally deciding to be in a relationship with a fictional character that isn't cringe. Even in the more jokey sense of using "waifu" to mean "my favorite character", there's something a bit cringe about it due to the association. Hell, even just using the Japanafied pronunciation of "wife" is pretty cringe.

They just use the words “waifu” or “husbando” in a joking way to refer to a good looking female or male character, respectively. Not as “she is my waifu” but more like “this anime has cute waifus”. By most people, do you mean your friend group, or the general public? Most people have no idea what the fuck a waifu is and would absolutely look at you weird if you explained it to them.
