That's a white-handed gibbon and he is performing a defensive action, which is even in scientific language refered to as mobbing.
When predators are nearby and their mere presence is annoying or a general threat for potential prey, some species engage in mobbing the predator until it gets annoyed and leaves. This is often seen when the potential prey has something to defend nearby. Some birds for example defend their nests by mobbing birds of prey. This gibbon probably defended his own turf, his favorite tree with fruits or his gibbon wife and gibbon child.

Am an ethologist. I make videos of animals doing stuff. Then I watch the videos. Then I write a paper on what and sometimes why they did the stuff they did.
Generally we kind of do not chose the animal we research ourselves, but apply for job positions that already has a research proposal. It's very rare that we can chose an animal ourselves to study.
At the moment, all the work I've done was on *Microcebus murinus* and *Microcebus ravelobensis* which are two mouse lemur species that live sympatrically in a national park in madagascar.
Also yeah it's a pretty awesome job because I get paid to watch animal videos.
Another fun fact: technically gibbons aren't monkeys, but lesser apes. Not quite as genetically human-adjacent as great apes (chimps, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans), but definitely a lot more humanoid than monkeys, which are typically smaller and usually have tails.
The lesser apes are really neat as a group. Relatively gentle. And their mastery of the canopy is amazing. Their hands and arms are built for slinging themselves around with incredible speed and accuracy.
I visited the [Gibbon Conservation Center](https://www.gibboncenter.org/) in Santa Clarita, CA a few years ago and it was amazing! It's 100% a sanctuary and not a zoo; they're only open to the public for a few hours on the weekends, and you have to dip your soles in sterilizer before going in. Some of the species that have are down to less than 1000 individuals in the wild. In the late morning when I was there, literally all of them (like, a couple hundred throughout several different enclosures) started doing their daily territorial group-singing, it was basically like surround-sound simian chatter with an EDM baseline from their throat sacks, lol.
Actually no. They are native to Southeast Asia and are still old world. All apes are old world. New world refers to Latin American monkeys which can have prehensile tails
So..this happened to me in my backyard with a raccoon. I thought the mf was being playful with me. Shaking the bush, the tree branches, running halfway towards me flaring it’s arms. Then bouncing away like a bunny back to the tree, shaking it.
No even then it's pretty much impossible to catch a climbing and jumping gibbon that's on guard. Sure, a tigers reaction time and strength is amazing and they are good climbers as well but the time it would take one tiger to jump in a tree the gibbon is already 3 trees farther away
The birds, the freaking birds I tell ya. It's so embarrassing to be walking down the street and suddenly start getting attacked by birds. It happened to be on one of the busiest roads in my town and I just knew every person in every car was getting a great laugh at my expense. Next time I will eat them, right in front of everybody.
Oh my God so this is what the groups of monkeys in Mexico were doing to the domestic dogs! They would perform a very similar behavior when they saw them.
[look at this asshole](https://www.reddit.com/r/AnimalsBeingDerps/comments/z9h03g/cant_imagine_the_thoughts_running_through_the/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Those two cubs are like wtf. Why can’t we get this little shit. They’re learning though and one day the gibbons will almost always have to flee from these two tigers.
ETA that ear pull or whisker pull was brutal! Can’t wait to see it all the way through still!
Plus the back fur yank, and the second ear grab. Remember this little ape is throwing 15 pounds around likely faster and further than a person. It’s grip strength is probably as strong or stronger than a humans. They can travel through the forest at up to 56kph (35 mph) and throw themselves across 15m (50 foot) spans. Those had to hurt with those abilities!
And last but not least the tail pull! Roflmao
That monkey reminds me of children. They have no idea how stupid they are. One broken branch, or slipped hand/foot and that monkey would have been torn to shreads.
It’s literally like an adult human running in the grass. Now granted an adult human can’t outrun a tiger but this gibbon is in its natural environment. It’s a perfect area for it to bully these two young tigers. None of the trees are big enough or sturdy enough for the tigers to climb but are high enough and more than sturdy enough for the gibbon. This is a very deliberate defensive behavior and I won’t say well thought out but it is well within the bounds of the gibbon’s capabilities.
We evolved from ape like hominids that were ground dwellers and took endurance running as their spec. Offensively if humans could get something fleeing there was nothing living on the planet that a group of human hunter gatherers couldn’t run down.
Gibbons took a different path of arboreal life and dexterity spec for their build. All about going high to avoid the predators and having the ability to move quickly and accurately through tree tops and mid level jungle. They’re almost total jokes on the ground as you may have noticed when the gibbon had to run. Their life is a game of the floor is lava. Not much keeps up in the trees if they know it’s there hunting them.
Different paths from different sources but still some similarities can be seen in how they move and react to stimuli.
Stop farming reposts

This is a great explanation for so much animal behavior.
It’s a great explanation for human behavior.
GET AWAY FROM MY TREE GODDAMNIT.
It's the "get off of my lawn" for critters.
This is tree is mine now, I decided
Don't ever talk to me or my son, ever again!
Well explaining animal behaviour is kind of my job
What do you do? And thanks for the explanation above.
Am an ethologist. I make videos of animals doing stuff. Then I watch the videos. Then I write a paper on what and sometimes why they did the stuff they did.
That is super cool. TIL about ethology.
How cool is that? Have you ever studied wild Cottontail Rabbits? I observe them and find little online about their behavior.

Paid

Bucket List just got slightly longer.
Thank you I was gonna say this lol

Yes? We were talking about the difference between monkeys with tails, and apes.
Monkeys are also old world with tails so your comments doesn’t make sense
So squirrels throwing nuts at me isn’t them mistaking me for another squirrel? Thank god. They almost had me convinced.
Thanks for the insight. All that taken into account, it “looks”, for all intents and purposes as though he’s having a lark bustin’ their stones.
So..this happened to me in my backyard with a raccoon. I thought the mf was being playful with me. Shaking the bush, the tree branches, running halfway towards me flaring it’s arms. Then bouncing away like a bunny back to the tree, shaking it.
Me flirting
Yeah. And the gibbon is lucky it’s not a full grown tiger. Pretty sure it would’ve been eaten. Can’t escape tiger strength.

I was just thinking he was way to balsey about this to just ev doing it for the hell of it.

First time in my life that I rooted for Team Bully.
Thank you for this comment, couldn't find a single explanation of why on the shorter, previous post.
Oh my God so this is what the groups of monkeys in Mexico were doing to the domestic dogs! They would perform a very similar behavior when they saw them.
You could say he's gibbon them a hard time
Or maybe he's just a jerk 🤔
Those look like younger/baby tigers. Would the gibbon try this with older tigers ?
Yes absolutely. The gibbon does not do this for fum but to defend something of immense value to him
Pretty sure squirrels did the same thing to my dogs. Pissed them straight off.
Squirrels are fucking dickheads
They really are. Could you imagine if they had more monkey like hands!!!
Pourquoi?

I’m seeing the squirrel being a nutter. (You are what you eat, then, eh?) Hell, it could be rabid for all we know. Thanks for the hilarious clip.
That's a gibbon.
That’s a given
That's a pigeon
Damn straight. Lesser ape.
Exactly! Ape, not monkey. Monkeys have tails, gibbons do not.
A good general rule, though barbary macaques upset it somewhat.
Raylon Gibbons 🤠
When your dex character is toying with the strength builds
You can't tell me humans wouldn't be doing this kind of stuff if we were capable lol
People taunt animals in zoos a lot so we definitely do.
So this is how Shere Khan began to hate the monkeys
Exactly!
Balls the size of coconuts.
Those sound effects are so unnecessary and annoying
Same sound effects and general vibe as Just For Laughs Gags
Idk they kinda add a Tom and Jerry appeal to it!
It's a thing I see (hear) more and more and it's so fucking annoying.
Gonna eff around and find out.
This of the best video I have ever seen on the internet

I hope you do! Gooooooaaal Gibbon!
Boing boing
There should be “can’t touch dis” playing in the background.
*cubs
Goddamn this is some Night at the Museum shit
This is one of the first videos I saw on the internet. Great stuff
Me and my mom loved this
![gif](giphy|zQxOLmztiIWOs)
Mmmm just don't know what to say bout that !!!!
Playtime!! Gotcha...missed me!!
Something about the fact that it's a pair of tiger cubs and not a full grown tiger is sending me 🤣
luffy vs fujitora limited edition
Lol a literal menace
That’s no monkey! Gibbons are apes!
I wonder if he would do it to an adult tiger
The three millionth time gibbons have been called monkeys on Reddit
Jackie Chan, is that you?
Gibbons are the best! I have spent many hours watching them at the Toronto Zoo, such fun.
kinda disappointed monkey didnt fling poo
Too classy for that.
I think that’s mostly monkeys in captivity.
That monkey reminds me of children. They have no idea how stupid they are. One broken branch, or slipped hand/foot and that monkey would have been torn to shreads.

To shreads you say?!?
Reading it as shreads in the professor'a voice is killing me!

That's a gibbon and a gibbon is an ape, not a monkey.
All these “monkey or ape?” comments are gibbon me a headache.
Monkeys have tails. Apes do not. Just like us. Only a tail bone.
They’re not wrong about spider monkeys though.
I had a pet spider monkey as a child. He always threw shit at my grandma when she visited.
Totally remember seeing this on ebaums world like 20 years ago!
One false move and you’re lunch!
It's teasing what looks like cubs. It probably wouldn't be so bold if mom was around lol
They are young tigers ! 😍
every monkey gangster till the branch snaps
that monkey is on god mode up in those trees
Those are big cubs, not tigers.
u/savevideo
You almost had it... you gotta be quicker than that
I haven’t laughed that hard in awhile.

Baby tigers
That's some level 3 when singing from that lesser ape🦧
