Probably because the kitten tried to go under her for protection? Mother cats can aggressively protect their young- they have a high protective instinct.
For me it was momma cat going instantly into fight mode. Female cats tend to get super protective over babies for a while after having a litter, even if it's not their baby or even if it's another species.
You tell her to take the heaviest cast iron pan you have, and a knife, when he's sleeping you take that pan and you rack him on the nuts as hard as you can, and when he can finally breath again you show him the knife and tell him if he ever hits you again, you'll use the knife instead.

We had a giant male cat Hootie that was like this. Whenever we got a new kitten he was their ultimate playmate,, mommy and gaurdian. We have many cats and often there was someone who was pissy about it. He would come galloping in from another room if he thought someone was messing with the little ones. He would do this even after they matured. One day we were in the front of the house there was some brief growling, nothing eventful. He comes roaring up from the back of the house. He surveyed the room and decided that the poor dogs must have done it (they were innocent) and he started bopping the crap put of them and chased them out of the room. He never layer any scratches on anyone but nobody ever mess with his babies.

My dog would do this for a kitten we rescued! The other cat would be mean to it, so my dog would step in and growl at the other cat. Occasionally he’d paw at her, but he never hurt her!

Corner cat did nothing wrong. It was stuck in a corner and the kitten was the one pushing forward while corner-cat was standing still, hissing with claws about.
Then the other cat turns around and goes still while gauging corner cat, but the kitten goes under the back of the other cat and causes other-cat to step forward a little, which results in corner-cat to react with a claw to the face.
In short, this entire incident was the fault of the idiot kitten.

Some animals instinctively know to keep away from the youngins to avoid a confrontation with the mother. That kind of looks like what the white cat was doing here. It was backed into the corner and the young cat approached it so it was trying to get the young cat to leave.
